50-State Legal Diesel

1 Feb

During a recent oil change/tire rotation service, I walked around the lot at VW of Orchard Park only to discover that they had a V10 Touareg TDI on the lot. When I looked closer, I saw that it was a 2006 model (and that it cost over $70,000). I asked the salesguy how they could sell that, and it has to do with the curb weight of the large, powerful truck. But that’s the only TDI on the lot.
Diesel engines boast fuel economy that is as good, if not better, than hybrids. And any mechanic can work on them.

Car & Driver (via Autoblog Green) has test-driven the all-new, 50-state legal Jetta TDI. This will be the first time since MY 2004 that new diesel passenger cars will be sold in New York State. Highlights of the new powertrain include:

  • 50 state legal
  • 140 HP, an increase of 40% over the 1.9
  • 236 lb-ft torque, an increase of 33%
  • available with 6 speed manual or DSG
  • it will not be called BlueTec

Is it also possible to get the conversion/kit to run the vegetable oil on these new models?

Either way it sounds good. I’ve always liked seeing those older BMWs and Volvos that run diesel, but didn’t want something I’d have to put repairs money into.

My smartbuy/lease is up in ’09, and this is probably the direction I’ll go, unless I get a better look at the Smart car.

On the side.. did you see the video of the Mitsubishi vs. the Lamborghini?

One of the best auto’s that I have bought in the last forty years, my VW TDI, 2001. If only I had been smart enough to but oil stocks at the same time.

So Alan, are you gonna buy the big daddy or not? $70g is alot of dough. Go get the petrol Porsche for that kind of cash. I like the Audi a6 myself. w snow tires it makes winter more fun than doing donuts in the super dupper parking lot in a $500 first car.
