Shorter Donn Esmonde

donnesmonde.jpgThe Bass Pro store for the central wharf site is a big box that will destroy not only that project, but the world.

I become increasingly tickled by the exhortations against “big box” stores given the presence of an unsightly highway overpass bisecting that property.

In is aricle he relates his phonecon with a professor from Oregon whose expertise is on identifing historic RURAL landscapes. For instance how can you tell that cornfield is a historic site. Then, you leave it alone Last time I checked Buffalo is not a Rural site. At least not yet. I guess Philly, Boston or DC did’t Think his ideas were worth adapting to their urban historic environments. Next bet find a second tier city that will.

a city that does not rank in the top 100 based on population is not a second tier city, otherwise all remarks spot on.

“You don’t want to create a Disney theme park” This expert is right about that. But Esmonde wants a theme park. The preservationists want a theme park. Instead of a big building with a fake historic face, esmonde wants small buildings with fake historic faces. Esmode is in over his head on this topic and that is why he is trying to convince us that experts agree with him. They don’t!! He probably doesn’t even recognize the diff between his logic and this expert’s logic.

Well, little Donny Esmonde had to go 4000 miles to find an expert to validate his opinion. How Pathetic! Of the Thousands of individuals who have contributed to Dept of Interior publications, he picks one (someone he knew?) whose specialty is evaluating and documenting rural historic landscapes. In fact the publication even has a picture of a Farm on it. It’s sort of like going to the dentist to get an opinion on bypass surgery. The dentist is a trained medical professional, but…..

One only needs to ask why this particular individual? With the number of universities and colleges in WNY why didn’t Esmonde seek a local Academic. I’m sure he could find at least one who agrees with him. (or maybe not)

I guess we are suppose to be impressed. Too bad ..I’m not. I have worked long enough with ‘PUBLISHED’ individuals to realize that, for some, the jump from the Academic environment to the real world is a chasm far too wide to cross. In addition, it is the height of arrogance for someone living 4000 miles from Buffalo, in a thriving high-tech community, to pontificate on what is good for Buffalo, a city desperately struggling too turn itself around.
