Random Thoughts: Baker’s Dozen

30 Nov

Today was a crazy day, and I’m looking forward to a crazy weekend. Therefore, with apologies to Dan Meyer, a couple of random thoughts:

1. It’s cold outside.

2. Listening to Sirius channel 32, I realized that I am very much sad that I’ll never see the Dead live again.

3. It’s my birthday Sunday, and I might have a birthday present for all of you that day if everything works out ok.

4. Sunday on Hardwick: Kevin Gaughan from 10 – 11, and Sam Hoyt from 11 – 12.

5. Santaland returns to the Chestnut Ridge Park next weekend and the week after that. Email me if you’re available to volunteer, and I’ll pass it on to the people organizing it this year.

6. Maria Whyte’s column in today’s News was an interesting take on the whole control board borrowing issue. If you haven’t read it, please do.

7. I don’t really care that certain of Collins’ campaign team are on the county payroll now, so long as they intend to remain on the payroll and do the people’s work come January 1st.

8. I don’t know about you, but the idea that the NYS Power Authority was busy using ratepayers’ money to make charitable contributions pisses me off. WNY pays higher-than-average electricity rates despite having Niagara effing Falls and its hydroelectric goodness in our own backyard, and NYPA should probably be abolished along with the other leech Authorities.

9. I’ve been shopping at the Circle-J. Have you? It’s fun!

10. Fed Up went to the Cliff Claven John Ratzenberger “Keep it Made in the USA” event last night at Babeland.

11. Geek turned me on to Yo Gabba Gabba, and now Mia loves it. It’s Dee-Lite meets Teletubbies:

12. Evel Knievel, RIP.

13. My hopes aren’t very high, but I really, really hope this works.

I see verizon is one of your advertisers… warning, they spy on you without a wiretap!

I see verizon is one of your advertisers.
Spread the word: They spy on everyone with their echelon feed to NSA that is not FISA authorized.
    Be warned – they’re unamerican!

They’re also destroying our environment with with their friggin cell towers everywhere. They say it’s the network but it’s really their big ass footprint radiating us with microwaves.

    1. It’s cold outside.
No Shit Sherlock, you moved to Buffalo, not Buffalo South
(It was 60 degrees Friday PM)

    2. Listening to Sirius channel 32, I realized that I am very much sad that I’ll never see the Dead live again.

“LIVE DEAD”—OH WOW, MAN!!! Actually I saw them live 3 times in the 70’s–incredible.

    3. It’s my birthday Sunday, and I might have a birthday present for all of you that day if everything works out ok.

    Happy Birthday, Young’un!

Thanks for your hard work on Santaland every year.

I’m sorry to disagree Hank, but the live dead of the 90’s was nothing like the live dead of the 70’s you remember so fondly. Jerry was a bloated zoned out statue, the statium shows of that era were awful. He was like the fat elvis I grew up with in the 70’s, I was relieved when he passed. Hank, was Jerry a member of your party too? I don’t remember him being on fox.

Mike–Why does your ass rest atop your shoulders?!

Jerry was probably a San Francisco Liberal. He didn’ make his concerts platforms for his own poltical agenda–as I don’t believe he had one. Back then it was still all about music and getting high, and enjoying life—well, anyway life as it could be lived under Jimmy Carter.

One of the reasons why many young people say Bush is the worst President is merely because they weren’t alive when Carter was President. Rampant inflation–double digits every year–the “Made-up” Engery Crisis—Drive 55, set thermostats at 55 in the winter—My ass. Military on welfare, no spare parts, not enough planes, Desert One.

I can remember saying as a sailor during Carter’s term “Everytime I hear the Star Spangled Banner, I get a stabbing pain in my wallet”. Ronald Reagan fixed that his first year in office. Still wasn’t much, but at least I didn’t qualify for Food Stamps anymore.

Though I disagree with the big-government pseudo Conservatism of our current President, some of his actions are already being vindicated, and in 50 years he will be looked at much as Harry Truman is today, though Truman only had a 30% approval rating in his last term.

Carter, the first and only President to criticize a sitting President, will be remembered for what he was. Shitty Submarine Driver, and a micromanaging loser of a President.

    But I digress

Back to Jerry—When I saw him in the 90’s he sure looked like hell. 30 years of hedonism can do that to a person. One still cannot knock his creativity, or the long term success of the band.

  7. MIke December 1, 2007 at 1:30 pm #

Now hank you blithering idiot, “but at least I didn’t qualify for Food Stamps anymore. ” This was not because you got a fat raise hank, its because Reagun lower the level to quailfiy. That took care of the cry babies, whats wrong hank still bitter cus you didnt get a parade?

  8. mike hudson December 2, 2007 at 12:25 pm #

1.) how can kevin gaughn be on the harwick show when actually they’re the same person?

2.) the dead sucked in the 60s, sucked in the 70s and sucked more in the 90s. jerry garcia sucked the most of everybody in the band and we can all be grateful he’s dead.

    3.) cold but beautiful.

    4.) happy birthday, alan.

  9. Michele Johnson December 2, 2007 at 7:38 pm #

    ALL THE BEST!

  11. Russell December 3, 2007 at 8:31 am #

    Happy belated birthday.

  12. Jen14221 December 3, 2007 at 9:26 am #

    Where’s our present?

  13. hank December 3, 2007 at 9:39 am #

    Mike
I got an 18% raise the first year Reagan was in office.
And If I didn’t qualify for food stamps anymore it would have been (with no raise ) they RAISED the income requirement, not lowered it.

    Now who’s the “Blithering Idiot”.

Didn’t need a parade. Please tell me someday about all your military exploits. Probably will take a LOT of imagination.
