I’m thinking of switching the blog up a little. I’m thinking of a new template and of making it a quasi-group blog, permitting certain invited people to post on a periodic basis. Mostly people who like to blog but don’t have the time or desire to maintain a blog full-time anymore.

What, if any, requests do you have with respect to a new template? I don’t want to do anything too dramatic, but I’d like to switch up the design a bit, modernize it to incorporate some new functionality in WordPress 2.5.

One of the things we had on the old shit.0 white-on-black template was truncated posts that you had to click-through to read the rest of. I didn’t necessarily have a problem with click-through, per se – it was the overall lack of functionality I had with that template that frustrated me. And don’t worry – I won’t be reverting to that.

I write the blog for my own benefit, but am mindful of the fact that you read it and that you don’t want to wade through a bunch of crap. Thoughts you have go in comments and I thank you for them.

Since this is a focus group of sorts… is a template I like very much. Like to hear what the masses like or don’t like about it.

I would like it if that horrid Jack Davis video did not start playing as soon as I get here. Yech!

Gee, honey, so sorry your job is going to China. Can you go there too, like now?

Agree with Chris…the massivepress template is easy to look at and seems relatively easy to navigate.

    Thanks for asking.

And, thanks for doing the blog in the first place. I can’t say I agree with you a lot, but I always always find it at least interesting, and often informative. Anyone who can so routinely raise mike hudson’s blood pressure can’t be all bad.

My only plea is to never go back truncated posts. It drives me nuts when I visit a blog that does that, or it comes up in my RSS reader that way.

Pundit, I hope that you keep posting regularly! My one wish is that it would not take so long to load the page. I am not sure if this can be addressed but I thought I would mention it.

Truncated posts aren’t a big problem for me. I’d prefer to have the whole post on the main page, but I usually click on most posts anyway so I can read the comments (which are half the fun of this site). But once I’m done looking at a single post, I find it difficult to then navigate to the next one. It’d be nice is there were “Previous Post”/”Next Post” buttons somewhere. I understand that the five most recent posts are listed on the right side so I can in theory jump to the next from there. My problem is I get to reading this site only every couple days and am usually 6-10 posts behind, rendering the Recent Posts on the side useless.

As for the template in general, I find that the current one absolutely destroys Firefox 3 on my Powerbook. It takes forever to load the pages, the whole browser freezes until the post titles (which load last) are done, and trying to pan up and down the page slows the whole thing to a crawl. Instead I read this in Safari and everything is dandy. I’m not sure if other people have this experience as well, but it might be indicative that this template isn’t cut out for FF.

Chris, as for the Massivepress site you mentioned, I like it. It loads quick in all browsers and doesn’t hang. I just wonder about the images associated with each post. I see that many of them look like cropped sections of the full-sized image contained within the post, but they’re in fact separate image files on the server. Seems like it would be a lot of extra work to make a thumbnail of each image for the main page. And does each post need an image? A lot of Alan’s posts don’t use them and it would be odd to require each one to have a pic.

    Now it just needs a Next/Previous button…

The page takes a long time to load. Cut the load time. Otherwise I am good and I come here to read Pundit, so don’t stop posting MmmK? 🙂
