What’s This? The Geek Is Gonna Blog?

29 Jul

I announced my semi-retirement from long form blogging a few months back and moved into the short form blog world of Twitter and other lifestreaming applications.   I also said that I would write to the portal at wnymedia.net and that most of our other writers would be following suit.

Yeah, so that worked out pretty well.  /sarcasm

Anyhow, I’ll continue to write at this page, buffalopundit and the wnymedia.net frontpage just to keep you guessing as to where my content will show up.

Actually, we’re working on Version 16.4.2 of the WNYM online gameplan and we’re moving in some new and interesting directions.  Wait, who are we kidding?  We’ll start moving in a new direction, get distracted with a shiny object and change our minds again.  That’s how we roll around these parts.

As you now know, Alan and I created a bit of a dustup last week when we dared question the anti-casino opponents about their motives, organization, and cash flow.  Clearly, this means we hate Buffalo, we’re Pro-Seneca, love to gamble, are being paid through nefarious pro-casino backchannels, and any other sort of insult that has been thrown our way.

As you might imagine, this dustup has inspired me to again put fingers to keyboard on a regular basis.  This time around, it will be less about politics and more about local business, technology, and Old Buffalo’s hold on the region.  It should be fun.

In case you’re wondering about the title of the post, I watched The Karate Kid last night and it’s still in my “Top Five Terrible Movies That I Watch Regardless of Time, Place, Or Point In The Movie”.  Also on the list is Roadhouse, Tommy Boy, Bloodsport, Rocky III, and Rocky IV.  Yes, I know that’s six movies.  So what?

    HE’S BACK!
You forgot Red Dawn, and any of the Governor Conan Schwarzenegger movies.

How is The Karate Kid a terrible movie? Sure, there’s some 80s kitsch to it, but it’s got a terrific script, it’s well-acted (especially by Pat Morita, whose performance is iconic), it’s full of moments that have become pop-culture icons, a decent score by Bill Conti, and the fourteen-year-old in me never gets tired of looking at Elisabeth Shue.

    It’s a good movie.

(Geez, these pro-Seneca goofballs don’t know shit about movies, do they?!)

Aside from Pat Morita, the movie is horribly acted with dialogue that is wanting on almost every level. The kitsch factor of the Cobra Kai and the brilliant shining star that was Billy Zabka gives the movie its flavor.

If you want to posit that Ralph Macchio’s performance in that movie and that of every other peripheral actor was above average, I’d question your sanity.

(Jeez, these overall wearing casino haters don’t know from good movies!)

Also, add Red Dawn to my Top Five….WOLVERINES!!!

    Welcome back!

Oh, you casino-enabling tool!!! (I’m losing track of what you’re for or against now…hmmmm….) The acting by the leads is fine in Karate Kid; Ralph Macchio does a good job conveying the awkwardness and out-of-place feeling that Daniel feels. (You want to see some bad acting from Macchio, check out Karate Kid III!) And the dialogue is fine (with the exception of some of the cheesy stuff put in the mouths of the villains). You crud-head!!!

(Oh, and Red Dawn is Teh Suck! Roadhouse is kind of fun, though.)

Road House is my very favorite horrible movie.

Always good to read what the Buffalo Geek has to say. Although I think the whole Casino-Wendt-Jackson-Joel Rose – perceived besmirchment of Buffalo Pundit was a bit of a shitstorm in a teacup, I’m glad it brought the Geek out of blogging semi-hibernation.

Nice to see the Geek come out swinging hard with a Karate kid reference. Personally, the Karate Kid and Crossroads always seemed to me like different facets of the same story. The plot lines mix and I half expect the Kid to break out the guitar at the tournament – or maybe Mr. Miaggi shredding while standing on one foot. Shit movies, but I’ve watched ’em both about three times. Generally, my favorite shitty movies star Steven Seagall – that is the pure stuff.

@Kelly – My “inner fourteen year old” doesn’t remember Eliz Schue or the music from KK, but I’ll take your word for it until I happen to see it again. I will also note that your love of the Star Wars, Hobbits and D & D firmly affixes a rather large asterisk on your motion picture recommendations. I do think you have a pretty good track record on music and movie scores, which could shrink the aforementiontioned asterisk to a normal font-size.

Also, your professed interest in books, of all things, makes your movie recommendations all egg-heady and weird. Cut it out.

Yeah, so…ummm, like welcome back to blogging!

@Jaq-I don’t remember Elisabeth Shue in KK, but the 39 year old in me never gets tired of looking at her anywhere…

  9. Kara at 10:06 am #

Spacecamp is at the top of my top 5.

    Welcome back, Geek!

  10. KevinP at 10:26 am #

Granted, the Elizabeth Schue in KK was all covered in baby fat, but she worked it off soon enough.

  11. Pam at 10:26 am #

I thought the performance of Joel Rose on the radio today said a lot about his opinion of others. I think he was rude and snobbish. I do think he is an elitist. His anecdotal references and reliance on data obtained by his good friend spoke volumes as to his credibility.
I wonder how many e-mails, phone calls and mailings were done from UB since several UB faculty/staff were behind the lawsuit. I wonder how the taxpayers would feel about that?

  12. Snarky Snarkmore McSnarkamaphone at 10:53 am #

    Red Dawn > Karate Kid.

  13. steve at 11:06 am #

Welcome back Geek. But remember, Geek-san, this not tournament. This for real. (KK II — just before the big finale fight. I guess what made those movies so bad but so fun to watch was the idea that Ralph Macchio could actually win a battle when we all know he couldn’t really punch hard enough to leave a mark. Now, Dalton in Roadhouse? He at least looked the part.)

  14. Pauldub at 6:35 pm #

I forgot True Lies. Tom Arnold kills me.

  15. mike hudson at 11:44 pm #

conan, true lies and red dawn are terrible movies?

not in this soldier’s book, mister.

“conan, what is best in life?”

“to crush you enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women.”

  16. mike hudson at 11:44 pm #

on yeah. good to have you back chris. nice speaking with you the other day. thanks.
