Wendt in the Niagara Falls Reporter

4 Aug

Mike Hudson, commenter and agent provocateur on this site, writes up the Wendt Foundation imbroglio over at his paper. Thanks to Mike for the kind words.

Hudson’s piece seems to say that the Margaret L. Wendt Foundation receives donations. As far as I know this is incorrect: it is funded by a bequest, and the income from that bequest. Hudson suggests that the casino litigation might somehow deny the members of the Seneca Nation their stipend: this is plainly false. The accusation that the “Network of Religious Communities… is apparently striking back in retaliation for the erosion of their bingo take” is scurrilous, and not worthy of further comment. The stuff about the Albright-Knox collection having “little that anyone would want to see in the way of art” is merely ignorant. The rest of the piece is mostly innuendo.

I’d be embarrassed to be praised in that context.

Its funny how all the idiots are lining up against that Moron Hudson now, I have said for years that he is fast and loose with facts. But when he is beating up on innocent(or not) people everybody loves to hop on the goose pile. Brian you better watch out, milk toast hudson will be writing about how he will kick your ass within the next few posts.

I dont think Mike Hudson is acting like a know it all. He is just bringing forth some interesting and shady facts about this Wendt Foundation who is supporting these anti-Indian casino citizens. Isn’t that what journalism is all about? Ofcoarse they don’t want everyone to know who is behind it all, mostly family members but I guess that is good because it goes to show the lack of support from the majority of Buffalo. It is just a close knit group of family and friends. LOL

If commercialized gambling is as popular as the casino supporters say and will reap the benefits they say then why settle for three with only one in Buffalo? They certainly are doing their best to skirt the law: http://www.speakupwny.com/article_3756.shtml

Also there are other lawsuits against not just the Buffalo casino, but all of them: http://www.upstate-citizens.org/Warren-v-United-States.htm

brian…am i to believe all that shit you said because you said it or because bruce jackson said it? if there was actually nothing wrong with those connections, why wouldn’t jackson have simply acknowledged them to begin with and not leave it to alan and chris to discover? certainly, if i’d had any sort of association with the seneca niagara casino over the years i would have mentioned it in the article.

and the standard in journalism is not whether something a journalist does is illegal, but whether the something is unethical or even has the appearance of being unethical.

have you seen some sort of paperwork that would indicate the jackson kids worked pro bono? billing records or anything? please share. why, if what rose does doesn’t cost anything, is he accepting charitable contributions from the wendt foundation? wouldn’t that be a poor use of the foundation’s precious resources?

and bill, you seem to know quite a lot about the wendt foundation so let me ask you a question. can you show me a document, a tax return or anything else that says they don’t accept private contributions? can you provide any data to show what their funding sources are at all? and if, as brian asserts, the $4 million in harrah’s stock represented just 3 percent of their portfolio, does that mean that the the wendt foundation endowment totals in excess of $182 million? again, as you seem to know, please share with us imbiciles.

and while the casino poll conducted in buffalo has been characterized by the anti-casino mob as a push poll for years, is the characterization any more than an accusation? i mean has anyone like zogby, gallup or someone else who knows about polling and doesn’t have anything to do with the debate at hand and doesn’t work for suny buffalo said it to be true?

because otherwise, the accusation is, uh, scurrilous.

jackson and his ilk have viciously attacked defenders of bass pro, the peace bridge, the albright knox, and now the casino viciously, impugning their motives and all but calling them crooks, mental defectives, profiteers etc. they back their slander with costly legal challenges if they don’t get their way.

this is one of the main reasons that monied developers stay away from the niagara frontier in droves.

The trustees claimed they didn’t know that Harrah’s stock was in their portfolio until they performed a periodic review? Gents, that is not being forthcoming. Who the hell ever heard of a 3+ year review period. Maybe quaterly or annual, to say three years is a joke. Whats the bigger joke is they get $1400/hr for doing nothing. And to top it off one of the trustees is even a stock broker. Like he was never curious to find out what was in the portfolio? Even I know what the hell is in the portfolio of the funds I buy.

“If you take the 58% as gospel, that is obviously not an huge majority.”

Your not been very honest Brian by holding back on the fact that only 16% opposed the Casino. (The rest didn’t know)

    fun fact, laughingoutloud!

Hudson – you can find out the answers to most of these questions by going to guidestar.org and reviewing the Wendt foundation 990. At last report, it appears they have assets of $147M.

You make it out as if you have to have inside documents to find out these answers when, in fact, you just need to know how to type words into google. Come on, mr. real journalist, do just a little amount of research before regurgitating other people’s half-ass research and using it to smear some foundation you’ve never heard of. Or are you just attacking and smearing because they have supporters who have attacked casino supporters?

As this ‘controversy’ unfolds, I wonder what BP and buffalogeek are actually accusing the wendt foundation of? You’re not actually accusing them of opposing the downtown casino because they own harrah’s stock, because that, of course, is absurd. So what are you accusing them of?

  10. Timothy Domst August 4, 2008 at 8:47 pm #

Bruce Jackson started the accusations with his “swiftboating” conspiracy theory. He now has to deal with people who don’t take his word as gospel from on high, and he is obviously not used to it.

Making unproven or imagined accusations using questions, as Bruce Jackson does in his Artvoice article, is a cheap and easy trick. Now all you Bruce Jackson fans get to see how cheap and easy. Except BP’s can be proven false, unlike Bruce Jackson’s, so BP is being charitable by giving a way out.

  11. mike hudson August 4, 2008 at 8:56 pm #

hrs…if what you say is true, how does that jibe with the assertion by others now attacking me here that the $4 million in harrah’s stock amounts to just 3 percent of the wendt portfolio. you people need to get your numbers straight. and how come there have been no tax filings for the rose organization or jackson’s citizens for a better buffalo? if the jackson kids are indeed working pro bono, why haven’t they, or jackson himself for that matter, produced the documents that say so in order that the whole thing could be dismissed?

as jackson’s “interview” with carl paladino clearly shows, he demands this of others who inject themselves into the public eye.

i found chris and alan’s research on this story far more compeelling than that of jackson at artvoice or esmonde at the news and i said so in an opinion column.

not a single one of the allegations brought forward by them has been disproven in the week or so since this story’s been kicking around, despite the fact that the wendt trustees, joel rose and bruce jackson certainly know the true facts, and artvoice and the news have far more in the way of resources to look into something like this than wnymedia.net. or the niagara falls reporter, for that matter.

this leads me to believe that alan and chris have presented a factual account of the tangled web of funding currently costing all of us money by bogging down the court system with a scurrilous lawsuit that has dragged on for two years. we are, after all, paying for the judges and government attorneys in the case.

if you are comfortable with all that, that’s fine with me. the fact that i am not shouldn’t bother you in the least.

so why does it? the fact that none of you choose to write under your own names makes me suspicious.

there’s an old rule in the newspaper business, not taught much these days but important just the same. “if your mother tells you she loves you, check it out.”

alan and chris followed this rule far more than any of the real buffalo “journalists” covering the case, and the purpose of today’s column was merely to commend them on a job well done.

Can anyone find the Foundations website? No, not the 3rd party ones. It was up last week and seems to have disappeared. It had a date of 2006 and gave a one page detailed descript of the foundation. Any way it’s gone. Maybe they are updating it, or maybe they are circling the wagons.
