Sarah Palin and The YouTubes

29 Aug

YouTube is an invaluable asset, seriously, it’s the second best thing on the entire Internet.

I watched this morning as Alaska Governor Sarah Palin was announced as John McCain’s choice for Vice President.  I wanted to learn about Mrs. Palin, so, I turned to the YouTubes to find some information about this self-professed Hockey Mom from Alaska.

Here’s what I found:

Sarah Palin Gubernatorial Commercial:

Sarah Palin Under Investigation:

Sarah Palin On McCain Being Wrong About Not Drilling In ANWAR:

Sarah Palin on Exxon Valdez Decision:

Sarah Palin Crowdsourcing Solutions For An Education Savings Plan:

And there are dozens more…

She seems to be quite popular in Alaska with approval ratings fluctuaing between 60-80% and we’ve got a lot of learning to do about this woman.

Honestly, I think one of the primary reasons for choosing Palin was to neuter Joe Biden. He was to be the attack dog in the general election for Obama and would have destroyed a shape-shifting Romney or an unknown like Pawlenty and made Joe Liebermann look like the mealy mouthed quasi-centrist that he is; especially during the debate.

Now, Biden will have to tone down his alpha male arrogance in that debate or end up looking like a bully. I think we remember what happened to a guy named Rick Lazio when he bullied Hillary in the debates…

Palin lacks experience which shuts down that attack angle for McCain in several ways. Especially if the Obama campaign stays away from continually leveling that charge.

Limited foreign policy chops, to me, are dealt with when a candidate surrounds himself with experienced advisors who offer independent counsel. Kennedy and Clinton did it and Bush put out the experience flame as well when he chose Cheney and surrounded himself with former Reaganites and members of his Fathers administration. Obama has done this as well with Biden, Clark, and dozens of other senior policy advisors that will make up his staff and cabinet.

What this pick signals to me is that McCain will be running to the far right in this election and will change tactics to label Obama as a tried and true liberal from back in the day. The “big liberal” gambit is all he has left in his shrinking quiver of arrows. Palin is a “real” new millenium conservative with a love for Baby Jeebus, strong pro-life record, loves guns, wants to drill for oil everywhere, etc.

EDIT – I just watched her speech…and have a few more thoughts.

If she comes across as a lightweight or unqualified, the media might take up that argument. The blogosphere will be filled with pictures of Palin when she was a beauty queen in a swimsuit, and she’ll be labeled a “ditz” by fringe whackos on sites like DailyKos.

The McCain camp will use those varied insults and sleights as evidence that sexism is alive in America and he’ll use it to pull the Clinton dead-enders and the soccer Mom contingent to his side side in defense of this woman.

This is window dressing as a pick and a subversive and calculating one, in my estimation.

I agree with most of what you say, though I think you may be pulling the lightweight trigger a bit quickly, time will tell. The PUMA scene is flocking to Palin, sadly, seeing her as third in a line of succession that includes Gerry, Hillary and now Palin.
What strikes me is just how little we all know about her, because there is really so little to know about her. Check out the straight by the issues sights, the ones that end in .org. It seems to me that this was a pick made by McCain because he could fill in the blanks in what ever way he chooses, and there are a lot of blanks. On the issues that are known, she is very far right of center, Feminist for life is an anti- abortion group, and I’ve read, though I’ve not scene a quote, that she opposes abortion in all cases even those involving rape, not a mainstream position, even for pro-lifers(like I say I’ve not been able to find a quote, but evidently a debate during her run for gov. demonstrates her view). She is life time member of the NRA, anit-gay marriage, pro ANWR drilling. Other then her bio (5 kids, 44 years old, etc) there is nothing else to know. For now that is.
Chris Mathews put a quote up on his show today, though the sources was not cited, that basically stated that she has not been interested in the Iraq war as she has been concentrating on state government. I would understand not being fully versed in the topic, but not being interested?!? She just agreed to be the VP, a heart beat away, and she is not even interested in a war that she could become commander in chief of, is that even possible?

BTW on a side note, I came across your blog and as displaced buffaloian I had to post. I grew up in WNY and like you left in frustration, my family is still in the area, and so I’m still tied to the area, and in many ways miss it. I get back to the area several times a year though, and enjoy it every time I do. I always catch the Sabers the night before Thanksgiving, and then the bars on Chippawa, and of course a trip to Jim’s steak out (must admit last year I noticed being much more tired, and didn’t even make it to last call).
Thanks for putting this Blog together, and giving me a bit of the home feeling that miss being down here in VA.

I think we need to give her a chance. It was just a year ago that Obama was a virtual unknown and now he’s filing 75,000 seat stadiums with nonsense, Utopian speeches. It would not surprise me if this woman came out swinging, making Obama and his loud mouth side-kick Biden look stupid. Besides, Senators like Obama, Biden and McCain don’t really govern a population, whereas governors like Palin do. Also, when she speaks it sounds more down to Earth than just the spew of crap like “Change” that Obama over exaggerates during every speech he makes.

What a great reason to realize both candidates are incredibly flawed and do not deserve your vote!

A vote for a third party candidate is not always wasted. If you believe it is a wasted vote, then you’re part of the problem.

Oh my fucking god Dan are you nuts ? Give her a chance ? To do what ? Start a war with Russia over Moose rights ? Fake another pregnancy ? Put a bounty on liberals legs as she did with wolves ? This psychobitch doesn’t deserve a chance.
