Jon Powers Postscript

6 Oct

On September 19th – about 9 days after the primary election, I read at TAP that Jon Powers was being offered a job in Washington DC which would not only give him something to do, but also be a way to get his name off the Working Families line.

Evidently, according to the Buffalo News, Powers has “moved out of the state”. Maybe that’s temporary so as to give the WFP line to Kryzan, or maybe it’s permanent. I don’t know. No one has officially heard anything from Jon as far as his future prospects are concerned.

On September 19th, I sent Jon Powers the following email, expressing my hope that he would stay in the area and help make Western New York a better place. I never received a reply. It appears as if some sort of deal was struck because moving out of state was really the only viable option to get Powers off the WFP line.

I hope that, when the dust settles from this election season, Powers considers coming home and making a difference. As we all know, you don’t have to be in government to do that.

I don’t know what you guys are up to, but the rumor is that you’ve been offered a job in DC or something. Either way, people are talking about what your next move will be.

Let me offer you my two cents.

We need you here.

If I was your advisor or campaign manager or whatever, I’d have had you do a joint event with Alice at the latest this past Monday, not only conceding the race, but pledging your support for her, and urging your supporters to get behind her. The race is over. You can’t win on the WFP line, and you’d just potentially spoil Alice’s attempt to defeat Lee and switch the 26th blue. Chances are, after all, that there won’t be a 26th after 2010, so it’s all sort of academic, anyway.

I don’t want you to move to DC because we need people like you here. In WNY. We need you to stay here and keep fighting the good fight. And the “good fight” can be defined in many different ways. It can be as simple as staying here and raising a family. Maybe teaching college students or getting your Master’s or PhD. Whatever it is, I, for one, supported you and believed in you during your campaign because you’re young, energetic, idealistic, smart, and you had come back home to make a real difference.

You can still do that, and you can do it to a great extent and with amazing effect.

We need people with your experience, education, and brains. We need people who are brave and don’t back down from a tough fight – people who will dive in headfirst into an issue. We need Jon Powers to stick around here.

Get a place in Clarence, get involved locally. Maybe run for county leg to replace Ranzenhofer. Maybe run for Assembly in two years’ time. Or not. Maybe just settle down and do something else.

I guess my point is that I really hope you consider staying here as a very real and viable option, and that you stay involved in local politics on some level or another. There aren’t a lot of Democrats in our neck of the woods, and believe me, we need you.

Best, and feel free to call me or email me any time.

    Powers 2010!

  2. hank October 6, 2008 at 4:13 pm #

After all the keys that were hammered on, all the hot air that was blown, Jonny Boy fled the State?

Well if he has for sure, don’t feel too let down. almost 300,000 people have done what he did. Took a look at the forecast, and beat fuckin’ feet.

Ever think that after the last 9 months or so, Jon Powers decided that WNY wasn’t worth the internicene bickering and pissing? The case certainly could be made….

  3. mike October 6, 2008 at 4:16 pm #

Hank, the shoe shine guy at the airport is retiring, when you coming back?

  4. The Humanist October 6, 2008 at 4:45 pm #

Only on BuffaloPundit can I find a racist oaf like Hank using the word “internecine”. Granted, he botched the spelling, but bless his heart for making the effort. The Pundit attracts only the most literate of racist commenters!

  5. Jon Splett October 6, 2008 at 5:16 pm #

Not that I fault the guy for leaving because I’m counting down the days until I can do so myself, but what does it say about his motives for running?

This move screams “I want to be a career politican!” not “I want to run for office to help my community.”

  6. pirate's code October 6, 2008 at 5:33 pm #

On the one hand, the guy has to eat so if someone is offering him a good-paying gig elsewhere…well…who can blame him?

On the other hand…what splett said.

My take? Jon Powers…nice smile, empty suit.

  7. The Wizard October 6, 2008 at 6:28 pm #

Or is he doing the noble thing and hitting the road so Alice can get another line?

  8. The Wizard October 6, 2008 at 6:29 pm #

Pirate – my take on you: cute handle, huge douche.

  9. Jon Splett October 6, 2008 at 6:48 pm #

It’s easy to be noble when you’ve got friends in Washington to hook you up with a paying gig.

  10. LC Scotty October 6, 2008 at 7:13 pm #

I missed the bit where Hank went racist-can you please cite, Humanist?

  11. Byron October 6, 2008 at 7:33 pm #

    Try here.

Though I think such people are best ignored.

  12. Byron October 6, 2008 at 7:42 pm #

Or laughed at. Jabba the Huckleberry thinks a Harvard educated lawyer is “an ignorant monkey”??

  13. WNYPMH October 6, 2008 at 8:08 pm #

Maybe being noble is just….um….noble. Truth be told, if Powers wants another shot at ANY elected office, he needs to do the right thing, and the right thing is to legally get off the WFP line. And Alan is right, we do need people like Powers here. If he has to split for awhile to do that, so be it.

  14. clarence guy October 6, 2008 at 8:26 pm #

splett is again retarded. If he wanted to be a career politician, wouldn’t he stay and try to take another local race?

Do you know what job he was offered in DC? Was it a political one?

Why should the guy stay around. Dickbags like splett and hudson helped Davis spend 1.5 million spreading false lies (splett just spread them – its seems that hudson actually took money which seems like the status quo for his paper).

how is it easy to be noble splett? the guy grew up here. Most wny’ers want to live here but it’s not that easy to find a decent paying job. You deserve to be shot in the face and buried half alive.

  15. Jim Ostrowski October 6, 2008 at 8:42 pm #

Powers has “moved out of the state”.

The smartest move has has made yet!

  16. Jon Splett October 6, 2008 at 8:58 pm #

“You deserve to be shot in the face and buried half alive.”

Just to know I pissed someone off that much by not supporting a Republican turned Democrat in a primary I couldn’t even vote in makes me smile.

  17. Jon Splett October 6, 2008 at 9:02 pm #

Oh and which lies did I spread?

Because last time I checked, the closest thing I’ve done to political reporting is standing around Democratic headquarters eating free pizza while talking about how much I thought they all sucked on a webcast.

Hating a crappy candidate = Lying now?

  18. clarence guy October 7, 2008 at 1:01 am #

the majority of your posts are lies. is that how you feed your family? “free pizza”? did you do any work for that pizza, or did you just eat it. because then you’re just guilty of wasting democratic donations on your fat self. why are you wasting donations splett?

how did you piss anyone off? im not pissed at you, i just think you’re a waste of human life. if you couldn’t vote in the primary why were you in the dem’s headquarters? are you that lonely or hard up for cash? maybe davis will give you a loan if you sleep with his 4th wife. but you’ll have to put on a cabana boy outfit first.

  19. mike hudson October 7, 2008 at 1:11 am #

1.) i think all harvard educated attorneys are ignorant monkeys. i guess i’m racist against monkeys.

2.) clarence gou…i thought i told you to go fuck your mother.

3.) jon powers is what his worst detractors said he was during the campaign. a political opportunist willing to use the backs of iraqi war orphans as stepping stones, motherfucking police officers in my generally civilized hometown of cleveland, keeping the money he was supposed to spend on beating davis so that he would have a security deposit on his new place in that bastion of progressivism and right-thinking, washington, d.c. piece of shit, like i told you, alan.

  20. Chris Smith October 7, 2008 at 1:21 am #

Ease up Clarence Guy, get a grip.

  21. Jon Splett October 7, 2008 at 1:45 am #

Oh my. I love when people try and get personal on the internet.

    Where to begin?

    1. “the majority of your posts are lies.”

-Citation needed. Show me my lie so I can respond to the claim.

    2. “is that how you feed your family? “free pizza”? did you do any work for that pizza, or did you just eat it. because then you’re just guilty of wasting democratic donations on your fat self. why are you wasting donations splett?”

    – Uh, first of all, I stood in front of a live WNYM feed for like, 2 and a half hours with Alan and Chris talking about races. I didn’t just eat pizza although, for us poor folk living here in the city, free meals are a big motivator. I think it’s safe to say you didn’t watch the broadcast, mostly because you think I’m fat. I may be dead of a heart attack by 35, but I am by no means fat.

Second of all, seeing how I’m not a democrat, if those 4 slices of La Nova and 7 wings kept the democratic party from campaigning with it, the night was a giant success. Democratic donor money being wasted fails to bring a tear to my eye.

    3. “maybe davis will give you a loan if you sleep with his 4th wife. but you’ll have to put on a cabana boy outfit first.”

    – Thanks to the economy delivered to me by the two major parties, I’m broke enough that throwing it in Davis’ wife for a few grand doesn’t seem like that bad a deal. No cabana boy outfit though. That shit’s a deal breaker.

    4. I lied before when I said I hadn’t done any political reporting before. I covered Ralph Nader speaking in Black Rock a few months back. Read it, and you might realize how stupid you associating me with Jack Davis is.

I’m an actual liberal. Jon Powers is not. It’s why I’d never vote for him.

Normally, I’d finish off with a swipe at you being rich, out of touch and from Clarence but I’ve actually encountered quite a few quality people from out that way recently who’ve changed my opinion of the place.

So instead, I’ll just say you’re a disgrace to a lovely town.

  22. Dave A. October 7, 2008 at 2:02 am #

Until somebody proves me wrong, I’m going to assume that Powers is an opportunist who, without a congressional seat avaialable, feels no affection for or commitment to this community. If he bails that quickly, without congratulating the victor, without a word to supporters who worked so hard on his behalf, screw him.

His military background and orphan work only counts for so much.

I disagree with Alan. WNY does not need somebody like that.

  23. clarence guy October 7, 2008 at 7:29 am #

hudson and splett – why don’t we set a personal meetting so I can reorganize your faces.

Splett – you’re a loser. I’ve actually met you in person once at a doctors office. Have the herpes gone away? Name me three things you’ve actually don’t to help WNY? Oh you can’t.

Hudson – you’re the biggest piece of sh*t out there. You’re a disgrace to real journalists everywhere. Even after the War Kids story was proved to be false you can’t help but keep pushing false information because of a hard on against Rivera. How about the thousands you took from Pigeon and Davis to biased reporting? Hopefully when your paper is bought out you’re the first to go. And name me three good deeds you’ve done for anyeone in WNY? (not including shutting down your paper for a few weeks to save us from garbage reporting)

  24. clarence guy October 7, 2008 at 8:39 am #

splett – i’d go back to find your lies and b.s. but I’m to busy doing super rich things in clarence, like getting tax breaks you’ll never qualify for and clubbing baby seals for my new car that runs on baby seal oil.

i realized you actually accounted for how much you ate at the dem. party. Really? i’m just egging you on to boil your blood and see how far you’ll go. you really responded with how much you ate?

    man you are very sad.

  25. clarence guy October 7, 2008 at 8:43 am #

dave a – you’re an idiot. Powers sent out a thank you to his supporters after the primary and the buffalo news reported he did call to congratulate Kryzan. so stop your lies.

how do we know the story is even true? the buffalo news article didn’t have any comment from Powers, and I’m guessing McCarthy didn’t even try. It was probably Kryzan who leaked the story to get some headlines because she’s got nothing else going for her.

Will you attack Kryzan for only so far running negative TV ads at Lee after saying she wouldn’t, or taking PAC money after slamming Powers & Lee for it pre-primary?

  26. hank October 7, 2008 at 8:45 am #

I have no idea where that “Racist” shit came from. Not a word of that comment could be construed as Racist. Perhaps from the guy in the leopard striped koufti I saw in the pictures on Humanists’ blog.

Which one professes to be the Humanist is not evident. Both of them look like refugees from a Hezbollah recruiting poster.

Should I have wasted your asses in Lebanon when I had the chance?

    Feel better now?
@Mike—I once had my combat boots shined for free (he wouldn’t take my money) from an old black guy in at LaGuardia Airport. He paid for his house in queens in cash, and bought a new Caddy every year.

Unless you make over 80K a year (in 1978 dollars), perhaps you better go take that airport job—you could even organize the rest of the guys into the Shoe Shiners Local #1, ya igorant twit.

  27. Byron October 7, 2008 at 8:54 am #

Like I said, not worth anyone’s wasting their time. Not even the “leopard stripes”. 😉

  28. Buffalopundit October 7, 2008 at 8:57 am #

Clarence Guy – cool it, please.

  29. The Humanist October 7, 2008 at 9:18 am #

@Hank – at least I show my face in public. Where can we get a gander at your fat ass, or don’t they allow cameras near the deep fryer at the Wendy’s?

BTW, the guy in the “leopard-striped” hat is Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka

  30. Byron October 7, 2008 at 9:54 am #

Humanist, why in God’s name would you want to see that?

    But if you insist . . .

  31. pirate's code October 7, 2008 at 10:01 am #

@wizard — “Pirate – my take on you: cute handle, huge douche.”

Is it the name that makes me a douche, or the fact that — like many, apparently — I found there to be less to Jon Powers than the campaign rhetoric implied?

The concept that Powers split in order to give Kryzan the WFP line is completely plausible and, for those who believe in fusion politics, probably a smart thing to do to assure her another line. The nobility of such an action will depend on what, if anything, he gets out of it.

After all, he had the option to “lead by example” and continue the good fight, didn’t he?

  32. Dave A. October 7, 2008 at 10:11 am #

I stand happily corrected. I live out of town, and it was my understanding that Powers did not congratulate Kryzan, or connect with his supporters. That does change my opinion of Powers.

Overall, that does not change my opinion of the other blindly ambitious politicians out there who chase the perks of office and treat their responsibilities as an afterthought.

And clarence guy, grow up. You’re not in junior high any more; try making an argument without spewing out insults like a 14-year old. It’s the same as I tell my own children – if you want to be treated like an adult, you have to act like one.

  33. Andrew Kulyk October 7, 2008 at 10:22 am #

@Fat Jon Splett… Jon I’d be happy to share some pointers with you about good nutrition and healthy living. Yeah you have been looking kind of chubby of late. And please send a check for $5.45 payable to “ECDems” for those seven wings and pizza you so shamelessly scarfed down on election night.

@Buffalo Pundit… I know you have been championing the Powers cause and I respect you for that, and this past summer I did some phone canvassing at the Powers HQ even though I don’t live in the district and never met the guy. But truth be told, this mysterious “move out of state” ploy to deliver another line to Alice seems like something straight out of the Orsini playbook. If the Repubs had pulled a switch like this you’d be raising all kinds of hell.

That being said, I say GO ALICE. I met her way back when she was representing Pyramid Companies to get our awesome mall built here in Cheektowaga. Sharp lady she’d make a great congresswoman.

  34. The Humanist October 7, 2008 at 11:07 am #

@Byron – Christ, man! You put me off my lunch!

  35. Chris Smith October 7, 2008 at 1:00 pm #

As far as I’m concerned, Powers is dead to me. I was never a big supporter and I thought his campaign was horribly mismanaged and said so on several occasions (like it matters). However, he should have been gracious in defeat; endorsed Kryzan, handed over his fundraising organization and asked his donors to canvass and support the Democratic nominee.

Instead, he skulks away with nary a public word to find a job outside the area. Good riddance to a power hungry empty suit.

  36. clarence guy October 7, 2008 at 10:36 pm #

i dont want to be treated like an adult. i could care less. i just love getting people upset on an internet blog and how it burns them up inside when they are mocked by a stranger and have huge “balls” to say things that they wouldn’t never be able to say in person, rather they hide behind a computer screen.

  37. WNYPMH October 7, 2008 at 10:51 pm #

Interesting to me, how people can dislike people so much that they are willing to turn conversations to such angry exchanges. Happens in politics all over the place, and it is disturbing.

Hudson is willing to continue to make statements that were asked and answered. War Kids was not a fundraising organization, it was programmatic organization. Powers was not paid $77,000 by War Kids, he was paid $15,000. And, by the way, the local CEO of Make-A-Wish makes lots more than that and doesn’t have to fly into a war zone to do it. This argument that Hudson leads and many of you follow is the lowest of the low.

The final statement that Hudson makes that Powers kept the money he was supposed to be spending on beating Davis and Alice to use for his own stuff is so ridiculous it is insulting to any intelligent people. Congressional campaign finance tracking is ridiculously stringent. The filings are thorough and complete.

And, how do any of you know what staff or fundraising organization was offered to Alice, and what was accepted and what was ignored?

Hidson, is a mean spirited…”hate filled tool” and I just don’t think he is capable of the truth or of any shame, whatsoever, and a feww of you are following in his footsteps.

  38. clarence guy October 8, 2008 at 8:47 am #

Chris Smith you’d just as pathetic as Hudson. His statement on his website and email to supporters asked them to stay engaged in politics you dumb f*ck.

Why should his supporters support Alice? She lied! She helped Davis spread false accusations (that Hudson was obviously paid to do as well) and spread them so she could sneak in the back door for victory.

If Powers did have people maxed out – they can’t give to Alice anyway, if he got PAC money – Alice claims she won’t take it! So get out of your mom’s basement and stop being retarded.

  39. clarence guy October 8, 2008 at 8:54 am #

Who is Larry Knox and why did Jack Davis pay him $ 820 4 times in september? Including dates after the primary where he wasn’t on any ballot in NYS?

Mullen made well over 6 figures for Davis and got CRUSHED — HAHA ERIC MULLEN IS A TOOL BAG

  40. WNYPMH October 8, 2008 at 11:10 am #

Mullen is an evil person. He’d slander his mom to make a buck.

  41. The Wizard October 8, 2008 at 6:45 pm #

Mike Hudson drinks too much alcohol.
