Achtung! Light Posting Ahead!

25 Nov

I’m always tickled by the dash alerts on my Volkswagen – the Germans instill a sense of urgency and command into everything. Tire Pressure Low! Service Now! Rear Left Brake Light is Out! Watch Out, Moose Ahead!

Today’s a travel day, and it’s busy for a variety of reasons including, but not limited to, a cranky & sick 2 year-old, getting cats to the vet for boarding, making sure the heat’s down and all that other checking and double-checking you do so that you’re not at 33,000 feet over Missouri when you realize you left the door wide open, the alarm off, and the burners on.

Anyone with keys to the back end can feel free to post over the next couple of days, and I might check in from time to time from sunny California. Despite all the craziness, turmoil, meltdowns, and bailouts, I am tremendously thankful this year for my family & friends, my jobby job, and my snarky little blog here. Best to you & yours.

wow! apparently a lot of people do listen to the tom bauerle show on wben 930. since my three-hour appearance there yesterday morning, we’ve sold in excess of 300 copies of “mob boss: a biography in blood”, and it looks as though we’ll have to do a second printing much sooner than expected.

from the perspective of putting mucho dinero into the pockets of one impoverished writer, the baurele appearance went far far better than the filled-to-capacity reading at the rock and roll hall of fame.

Okay Hudson, I think you’ve finally cracked me. Which ordering method gets me the book quicker, Amazon or through the paper?

I think a WNYM book review may be in order.

  3. mike hudson November 25, 2008 at 3:21 pm #

thanks jon…if yer gonna review it, i’ll just send you one. where to?

  4. mike hudson November 25, 2008 at 3:22 pm #

even with pundit out in sunny kalifornia, there’s business to take care of, after all.

  5. mike November 25, 2008 at 3:54 pm #

Hudson has me hooked too, I drove down Dana drive looking for the Don’s old house.

Hudson- Not home right now but I’ll drop you an email with my address when I get back.

  7. Chris Smith November 25, 2008 at 5:38 pm #

The book sounds great Mike, but that radio show was unlistenable. You sound like a froggy Cryptkeeper.

  8. Becky November 25, 2008 at 7:00 pm #

I’ll do a book review too! Oh wait – when I did Niagara Falls Confidential I only mentioned the chapter about Tesla, and then crammed it in the same post as another book about the Falls. Never mind. So how come you’re not selling it on the Reporter? Not that I’ve read Diary of a Punk yet either…I’ll check out Amazon.

  9. mike hudson November 25, 2008 at 10:18 pm #

i don’t know chris….sold more than 500 books today. i’m calling it the “bauerle bump.”

but thanks for your weak attempt at pissing on anything good that happens to me nonetheless. dunno what i’d do without hateful buffalonians to spur me on to further triumph. hell, it wasn’t that long ago that the death of the niagara falls reporter was predicted on this very page!

isn’t it funny that the only president ever to come from buffalo was named cleveland?!?!?

  10. mike hudson November 25, 2008 at 10:25 pm #

sorry chris…i meant to say “hateful LOSER buffalonians” in order to distinguish you from the great listerners of bauerle’s show!

and forgot to mention, i’ll be appearing at the erie co. spca radiothon with tom b. on dec. 5 between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. i’m donating half of all proceeds that day to our furry friends! it’s at the spca headquarters on ensminger rd.

  11. Chris Smith November 25, 2008 at 10:39 pm #

I gave you a compliment Mike, congratulations on the book. However, I think you can admit that on the radio you sound like a cross between a frog that smokes ten packs a day and Tom Waits.

  12. mike hudson November 25, 2008 at 11:06 pm #

chris…i’ve always loved tom waits. and the good folks at wben thought so much of the show that they’re GOING TO REPLAY IT IN ITS ENTIRETY SUNDAY NIGHT!!!!!!!

  13. Chris Smith November 25, 2008 at 11:40 pm #

We’re all very proud of you Mike. I know how you desperately crave our approval, so I hope that makes you feel good.

  14. mike hudson November 26, 2008 at 12:12 am #

fuck you chris. you and your equivalent losers at the buffalo news and artvoice who salivated at the potential demise of my newspaper just a few short weeks ago, the unfounded and never-substantiated bullshit you all ran with concerning my being in the pocket of golisano, pigeon, davis, bin laden and i don’t know who else, fuck you all.

  15. mike hudson November 26, 2008 at 12:13 am #

I WILL HAVE MORE WBEN AIRTIME THIS WEEK THAN KEVIN HARDWICK!!!!!!

  16. Jaquandor November 26, 2008 at 6:33 am #

isn’t it funny that the only president ever to come from buffalo was named cleveland?!?!?

    Millard Fillmore….

  17. mike hudson November 26, 2008 at 8:15 am #

i believe fillmore resided in east aurora, a charming little town with wonderful architecture.

  18. mike November 26, 2008 at 8:22 am #

mike, do the childrens hospital telethon too, the CEO’s need a raise!!

Also seriously think about the NF fireman’s toy telly, but you might hate them too.

  19. mike hudson November 26, 2008 at 8:37 am #

actually, the niagara falls reporter in i believe it was 2000, donated advertising to the nf firefighters auction, which resulted in the highest single purchase price realized during the event. our then-local, mickey rimmen’s arterial lounge, likewise finished at the top of the list insofar as dollars raised from a single drinking establishment in the city.

the next year, we editorially supported the closing of one of the city’s ubiquitous fire stations as a cost saving measure and they never asked us to participate again.

sad really, since it only hurt the children.

the reporter has since largely dedicated its chharitable efforts towards community missions here. this year, we raised something over $30,000, which i’m sure they put to good use.

  20. Front Page ARTICLE Parlato November 26, 2008 at 10:42 am #

    @ Mike

I am trying to figure out how much actual out-of-pocket expenses or real financial or personal “giving” the NF Reporter incurs in their charitable support of Community Mission or any other charitable purpose you claim to “give” support to. NFR (Niagara Falls Redevelopment) has bought 1 or 2 full-page ads each and every week for years – and pays YOU for the printed space for apparently ALL of Community Missions ads in your paper. NFR never has their own business ads, as they have no active holdings or commercial purpose to advertise. When the NFR ads aren’t for the Mission they are for some other charitable event or organization. Charity can be pretty damn profitable, can’t it Mike?

It actually appears that, for years, you have made enormous profit whenever your paper prints space for charitable purposes. Instead of paying you to support the Mission, why doesn’t NFR just cut out the middle man and give 30% of your advertising revenue directly to them?

I also am also enjoying the tortured, partly rehashed web articles (they are no longer advertising)penned by Parlato. Does he pay you for the privilege of affecting the editorial direction of your paper? If you are NOT paying him, and he is in fact paying you, (as he has all year) for these weekly full-page articles, then should these not be bannered as advertisements, espousing Parlato’s business agenda?

  21. STEEL November 26, 2008 at 12:28 pm #

Fillmore had a mansion on Niagara Square. His body is still in Forest Lawn.

  22. Michele November 26, 2008 at 1:58 pm #

Happy Thanksgiving Alan..Have a safe trip

  23. mike hudson November 26, 2008 at 3:32 pm #

1.) full page whatever…wow! you seem to know lots more about nfr’s business than i do. i would suspect you were howard milstein himself except that he’s an honorable man and would never in a million years stoop to the depth of making dickless and unsubstantiated charges while hiding behing a made up name like you, bitch. fuck you.

2.) steel…if it means so much to you, you can tell people that millard fillmore, one of our greatest presidents ever, is from buffalo instead of east aurora where he actually lived and kept a law office for his entire adult life. yes, in much the same way that buffalo has co-opts the name niagara in advertising its shitty airport, shitty partnership, shitty convention and visitor bureau etc., i guess it’s all in the interest of “regionalism.” hey why not change the name of the airport from the buffalo-niagara international to the millard fillmore international? such a change would more truly reflect that certain je ne ces quois that makes the nickel city the truly special place that it is. in virginia or ohio, of course, they’d be ashamed of millard fillmore being bored there, but in buffalo they fight over his corpse. fuck you too,”steel.”

    books sold since 9 a.m. yesterday = 1,000
