Detroit = Buffalo. Sorta.

8 Dec

Read this depressing assessment of Detroit’s renaissance-that-never-comes, and just substitute “Buffalo” for “Detroit”, “Western New York” for “Michigan”, and “Bills” for “Lions”.

It’s practically a carbon copy.

When a state lives with a story line of decline for so long, it doesn’t just affect the mood. It becomes part of the culture. Whereas America’s history has been one of expanding horizons, yours has become funnel-shaped. Much like the postbellum South, Rust Belt culture looks backward at an idealized past–a nostalgia not for plantations but for three-bedroom houses paid up on blue collar salaries. (See pictures of the remains of Detroit.)

“It used to be you could get a job at one of those factories, even without an education, and make a decent living to support your family,” says letter carrier Dina Schueller, 33, of Saranac. Now her husband has been laid off from his construction job, and her brother moved to Maryland for work. Like many left-behind Michiganders, she’ll be seeing fewer family members this season.

Detroit still has a lot more sinking to do. Buffalo was built on manufacturing, but the demise of Bethlehem Steel was probably not dissimilar in scope to what would happen in Detroit were one of the big three to go belly-up.

So, yay for the worst being over for Buffalo, ostensibly.

You may be able to interchange Buffalo and Detroit within the article but if so then the moral of the story is not the despair it is:

“You want to believe in the place where you live. If you grew up in Western New York and chose to stay, it’s for deeply felt reasons: your family, the Midwestern lifestyle, the natural beauty, Buffalo’s industrial charm. You stick by Buffalo–even if Buffalo, as an industry, hasn’t stuck by you. You need to hope.”

Detroit is staring into the abyss. They will not only lose factory jobs. They will lose white collar jobs too. If the Auto companies can’t pull it together it would not be good to be Detroit. – and that is on top of a place that is beaten down in a way that makes Buffalo look like a South West boomtown (pre housing crash of course)

The worst will never be over while the policies of the state government tend towards high tax and BS cronyism

    I agree with Anthony

From BP: “So, yay for the worst being over for Buffalo, ostensibly.”

I hope so too, I have hope, but I also doubt.

I STRONGLY ENCOUAGE EVERY WESTERN NEW YORKER TO EMAIL OR WRITE GOV ATTERSON ASAP TO INSIST THAT A WNY’ER BE APPOINTED TO FILL HILLARY CLINTON’S VACANT SENATE SEAT. OVR 30 YEARS ODF TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTAION IN THE US SENATE (AND IN THE STATE LEGISLATURE) IS A CRIME !!!

Ike is right, but not just the state, the county and city as well. We will keep falling and losing people/jobs until voters realize how much worse our government is than other parts of the country.

yeah detroit’s just like buffalo. except it has three times as many people. and a fine baseball team. and a great basketball team. and the fifth-largest art museum in the country. and a symphony orchestra that plays a full season. and an actual lake port. and motown records. and the stooges were from there. and the mc5. and mitch ryder and the detroit wheels.

and the worst is yet to come for buffalo, detroit and everywhere else.

    the three stooges?

  9. Anthony December 9, 2008 at 8:59 pm #

Hudson you can take your negativity and go back to Cleveland. We in Western New York can do without your cynicism (although your hatred of Francine DelMonte is well warranted.) There are plenty of people around here that are trying and want to make things work. Buffalo and my home city (NF) have great potential and in the very near future we will put together the right collection of political, civic, and business leaders to realize our collective goals.

But hudson gives away his paper for free and feeds stray cats, granted he writes about the news a week after it happens but its funny how he defends crooked police by comparing them to his dead kid.

i hope you’re right anthony. but i think waiting for a big turnaround for the better here on the niagara frontier is akin to waiting for my beloved indians to win the world series.

and mike, you read every word i write.

you feel the need, deep inside yourself, to aomment on every single thing i write here.

    you are my bitch.

@ Hudson – how much did the SPCA make last Friday? That line was crazy.
@ Mike – You are an asshole. I may be off topic, but you are an asshole.

Sorry that you think that paul, but just to hudson. payback is a bitch huh hudson?

hi paul…i signed something over 360 books that day. it was good for them, good for me, good for tom etc. thanks for coming.

as for “mike,” he is a celebrity stalker, scanning this site every day waiting for me to post so he can scrawl his stupid shit. so complete is his identification with me that he even adopted my name, though he’s used others.

the funny thing is that, while i often appear in public and make sure to announce it here specifically in the hope of seeing him in person, he never shows. he’s often threatened to, but never does.

that’s because in addition to being a cretin whose confused love/hate fixation on me renders him completely incapable of thinking/posting about anything else, he is also a coward.

payback? i’ve had men try and kill me. some nameless pansy making retarded comments on a message board falls under the category of comedy relief.

  15. mike December 10, 2008 at 12:32 pm #

being bitch slapped in the men’s room does not rise to “i’ve had men try and kill me” or did that happen in the ladies room?

  16. mike hudson December 10, 2008 at 1:14 pm #

i’ve lived here 10 years, asswipe. i’m 53 years old and, unlike you, i haven’t spent my life fixating on my betters. as for the incident you mention, my mom hit me harder than those pussies.

  17. mike December 10, 2008 at 2:37 pm #

its been 10 years? it feels like 20, lets call me the rail thats gonna ride you out of niagara falls before another 10 years is up.

  18. mike hudson December 10, 2008 at 3:18 pm #

no, let’s call you a stupid piece of shit loser.

  19. Buffalopundit December 10, 2008 at 3:34 pm #

Why don’t you two get a room, already?

  20. stefano December 21, 2008 at 5:11 pm #
