Given the breathless reporting about today’s snowstorm, you’d think we didn’t live in Buffalo, NY, or that it seldom snows.

Where I used to live, 3 inches of snow cripples things and shuts down schools and government offices. Here, it takes a foot of fresh snowfall to make people sit up and start to take notice.

I find this hysteria a bit embarrassing. All the school closings only put the kids outside in the deadly snow, or traveling the treacherous streets to go shopping. Oh my…
    Buncha wusses.
And notice how I didn’t even go into the standard “Why, back in my day” harangue? You’re lucky.

It is all about the timing. Between Christmas shoppers, schools letting out and the afternoon drive home time, the roads could be quite the mess with major backups and delays.

If the snow started falling in the evening, I would posit that most schools would be open with Buffalo perhaps being the exception.

Everyone is gun shy, after that pre Thanksgiving disaster several years ago.

Now they close at a drop of a hat.

The worse the forecast, the weaker the result. Its always the one they never see coming.

Um, well, as of right now, I can hardly see across the street, so maybe… maybe… when you get 5-9 inches in 6-7 hours, it’s sort a big deal, yes.

Though the news coverage of the storm is funny, better to be safe than sorry.

The media hypes snow because it glues eyes to screens and radios.

The TV news goes crazy in Chicago if there is 1 inch of snow. Now, Chicago can not compete with the Buffalo area for snow fall but this it is no stranger to snow and cold. 1 inch of snow will gain the attention of at least the first half of the late night news and will include at least three appearances by the weatherman along with several live feeds which include views of highways, kids playing and a distressed shopper. Today a reporter on the radio worried (and this is with light snow and about 4 inches on the ground) Crews have been out all night,(he then expounded about how many tons of salt has been dropped and the number or plows etc) he continued on… “With an additional 1/2 inch of snow predicted the only question now is will they be able to keep up with the storm!”

A friend who works at one our local TV outlets (hint: they are on our side) told me recently that they’ve all been told by the consultants — if you win weather, you win your time slot. Thus, the rather over-the-top investment in equipment, meteorologists and time devoted in a broadcast. Hype glues eyes to TV screens, but it also justifies the investment, I guess.

Makes me long for Tom Jolls standing by the gazebo looking at the weather stick.

They needed to pay a consultant to tell them weather is the big draw on the local news in Buffalo?

I am in the wrong business.

been snowing like a motherfucker up here since about 9 a.m. few cars on the road all day, mostly service vehicles.

that said, a certain grocer aligned with don stefano back in the day paid the weathermen in buffalo to predict massive weekend snowstorms throughout the winter in order to get people into his supermarkets on fridays, when certain payments came due.

good try hudson, but if you lived here “back in the day” you would know that Niagara Falls had, loblaws, acme, kmart food, bells, super duper, twin fair and a large number of smaller neighborhood stores. So your blending past and present with no regards of the facts. vinnie wants to thank you on his new job, pays much better than the mayor’s salary.
