After listening to the audio, the phrase “Boom Goes the Dynamite” comes to mind

I had originally thought that she would be a good choice for the seat. She has done absolutely nothing to reaffirm that belief.

You know, she’s a trained attorney. Even if she’s never practiced, she has enough education to know the importance of presenting yourself to an audience, whether it’s a judge, a jury or the media.

Franklt, I’m getting offended by her lack of concern for the citizens of New York. Her only focus to date has been sending her minesweeping team out to clear the field of any potential rivals.

  3. mike hudson December 28, 2008 at 11:41 pm #

    her chances decline daily.

  4. Restaino December 29, 2008 at 7:34 am #

All “you knows” aside she is perfect for the seat. Her message will speak directly @ WNY. You Betcha!!

  5. buffalomom December 29, 2008 at 7:52 am #

Wow. This is not polished or impressive. But why we are insisting on pulvarizing this woman, I don’t get it.

She is intelligent, a mother, educated and compassionate. She was raised in a family which emphasized the public good.

Funny the difference between us and the Rs. Sarah Palin was a useless piece of moose crap and she is the Republicans’ pride and joy. We have an educated, sophistocated woman and we throw her to the wolves.

I wonder how much Hillary is behind the trashing. Afterall, the Kennedys did call out the Clintons on all the race-baiting and in the process, endorsed the President-Elect.

  6. Restaino December 29, 2008 at 7:54 am #

    @ buffalomom…finally someone gets it!!!!

  7. buffalomom December 29, 2008 at 8:02 am #

One more thought. If I was a little kid and my dad, while being a politician, had his blown off, I would likely have been a little hesitant to jump into politics myself. Oh, yeah, and then my uncle being murdered. Yeah, I wouldn’t have put “Being a Politician” high on my life’s list of to-dos.

I’m sort of tired of the hypocrisy. We don’t like the old hats who’ve been around, done nothing and abused their power as elected officials. But someone new comes around and we don’t like that either.

    What the eff ever.

  8. Terry December 29, 2008 at 8:21 am #

    I still say a little nip/tuck/botox wouldn’t be a bad move

No matter how competent she might be–and that’s not at all clear–she doesn’t deserve the seat for being rich; she doesn’t deserve the seat for being famous. If she wants to get into politics, she can get elected just like everyone else. Given her wealth and name recognition, I bet she’d do pretty well, but she’d at least subject herself to the same process her uncles and father endured.

I’m sort of tired of the hypocrisy. We don’t like the old hats who’ve been around, done nothing and abused their power as elected officials. But someone new comes around and we don’t like that either

It is not hypocrisy to reject patronage, and it shocks me that a right-thinking Democrat would suggest otherwise. Patterson should tap someone who at least has ever been elected to anything. Why doesn’t Mrs Schlossberg-Kennedy, as Joan Walsh suggested today, endorse Rep. Carolyn Maloney for the Senate seat and then run for her seat in the House?

@Terry: and that is why American politics is so annoying. Maybe you’re “only kidding,” but the fact that you even bothered to type it out, (not to mention hit Submit) on that one pretty much sums up the Idiocy Of The GenPop to me.

I think the you knows must be a city thing. It took me quite a long time to lose the you knows after moving up here. I never even knew I was doing it until I was doing sales and my boss pointed it out. Then I became very conscious of it, but it still took a while to get it out of my system. So, you know, it can be, you know, difficult, but not, you know, impossible, to change your, you know, pattern of speaking. 😉

  11. buffalomom December 29, 2008 at 10:33 am #

I’d like to clarify something. Democracy isn’t always that democratic.

I know several people locally who wanted to run for elected office. A lot of good people who wanted to run got shafted by a chairman who had his own interests at heart. Good people often don’t get past the bs hurdles. More power to her.

  12. hank December 29, 2008 at 10:49 am #

Take the Messiah Barry Obama away from his teleprompter and he you-knows, ahhs, ums, even worse than Caroline. Nobody mentions THAT though, as the Messiah is perfect in every way, and every American’s life will be filled with hope, and their lives will change in every way for the better 10 seconds after he takes the oath.

Just don’t hang by your pubes waiting. I’ve already seen him say “It will get worse before it gets better”. He wasn’t saying that before November.

This Daily News Article is a chop job. The Drive-By media normally doesn’t gore liberal icons. Actually the job the Daily News did on Caroline probably had her on the phone with Sarah Palin.

She’s intelligent, concerned about NYS, and she will have to run for re-election in 2010 if she does get appointed, so all you “SHE SHOULD GET ELECTED” morons can rejoice. After 2 years she may not WANT to run.

Can’t believe you liberals would beat up on one of your own this way.

  13. Russell December 29, 2008 at 10:51 am #

More power to her for using her family name to get past some hurdles? Why?

Buffalomom, aren’t you the one that has implied numerous times that the Democratic Party has a monopoly on democracy and maintains a higher standard of democracy? Now you’re willing to cast that aside because an intelligent woman is trying to use her family’s name, clout and money to get ahead? Who’s the hypocrite?

  14. buffalomom December 29, 2008 at 10:54 am #

We should all be called to public service like Caroline. The world might be a better place.

@ Russell – Let’s be clear. I think the Democrats have a much more democratic platform and ideals.

Politics can be ugly regardless of the party.

  15. buffalomom December 29, 2008 at 10:57 am #

@ Russell – more power to her for being called to serve and actually being able to do it (or get closer than a lot of people). There are many too many assholes entrenched in the system who get in the way of good people trying to make a difference.

  16. Russell December 29, 2008 at 11:02 am #

Buffalomom, she wasn’t called to serve, she put herself out there.

  17. buffalomom December 29, 2008 at 11:05 am #

    How about this analogy?

Take an NHL team who drafts star players before the trading deadline to be stronger in the playoffs. Some guys show up for practice and the games all year and sit on the bench while a star helps win the Cup or at least get closer to it than they would have otherwise.

I see this in much the same way.

Has she been in the trenches carrying petitions and campaigning for our team? Nope.

Has she been donating oddles of money to our team? Nope.

Can she get the job done? I think so.

Can she raise the money to get re-elected? I think so.

I think a win for the Democrats – meaning keeping this seat blue to help Obama get things done – is important. I think she can deliver for upstate as well as downstate.

I’m convinced Hillary is pissed and working behind the scenes to undermine her for calling out the race baiting and endorsing Obama.

I think Chuck is likely doing the same thing as he wants to be the star Senator.

  18. buffalomom December 29, 2008 at 11:06 am #

@ Russell – whatever. More people should “put themselves out there” to serve.

  19. Russell December 29, 2008 at 11:37 am #

Buffalomom, your analogy would work if we were talking about a proven, veteran star player, but Ms. Kennedy is not even a rookie. She hasn’t even played a single shift in the minors.

The nature of the qualifying questions you asked show how dedicated you are to the democratic ideals. It seems your main concern is service to party. What about service to constituents and country? Isn’t that what really matters in a democracy? You have no proof that she’ll do a good job, just a gutt feeling. The only part of your litmus test that is demonstrable is that she can raise the money. That’s all we really know about her and apparently that’s enough for you to qualify someone for high office.

So are you saying that in this bluest of blue states there is no one in the Democratic Party that’s worthy of a promotion? You don’t see a star veteran anywhere that can be called on for this? There’s not one single Democrat in this state that has not only done the work of the party and can raise the money, but has also shown that he/she can serve the constituents well and can get the job done? There are no good people that have already been working in the trenches to make a difference on your side of the aisle to merit a promotion? You’d rather take a chance on an unproven person because you think she can do the job and she has a good family name rather than promote someone who has been there, has worked for the people of NYS and has earned a chance to do more for us at a higher level. Yes, your high democratic ideals are showing.

  20. Restaino December 29, 2008 at 11:37 am #

@buffalomom….this is way Caroline is perfect for WNY. She was inspired and some people have never been inspired in their lives. They don’t understand or even try to!!

  21. mike December 29, 2008 at 11:41 am #

sorry hank, He has at least a year to blame the moron bush for any problems, a play right out of the republican’s play book.

  22. Restaino December 29, 2008 at 12:00 pm #

What really suprises me is the people who would like Byron Brown to be nominated

  23. buffalomom December 29, 2008 at 12:55 pm #

@ Russell – “It seems your main concern is service to party.”

Well, considering it is the goal of the Democratic party to include and serve all, yes. Service to the party in my book is service to all.

  24. buffalomom December 29, 2008 at 12:56 pm #

Byron Brown sat in the State Senate doing nothing for years. Now, he’s a lame sack sitting in City Hall. But he’s been a politician so he’s more qualified? Spare me.

  25. Russell December 29, 2008 at 1:06 pm #

Nice job trying to set up some straw soldiers there, Buffalomom, but that’s pretty lame. So there’s no other Democrat in the state that’s viable other than Byron Brown and Caroline Kennedy? I didn’t mention Byron so why is that the only name you’re mentioning?

No, carrying petitions for the Democratic Party is not service to constituents or country, but nice try. And the goal of the Democratic Party is not including and serving all. Where do you get that? No single democratic (notice the small ‘d’) party can possibly do that.

So what about the rest of it. Do you think, as you seem to imply, that there is no one in the Democratic Party currently in office from NYS that is worthy of a promotion or that is simply a good person trying to make a difference, but with a proven track record.

Restaino, do you think Caroline is the only pol ever to be “inspired”?

  26. Restaino December 29, 2008 at 1:12 pm #

@Russell…No I don’t think that Caroline is the only inspired person. But she is better then all the Upstate options we have. Just because her name is Kennedy doesn’t mean she is like her Father, or Uncles. Lets just judge her as Caroline.

  27. Greg December 29, 2008 at 1:37 pm #

    meh
she’s getting it simply for being a Kennedy. I thought we fought a war in part to get rid of royalty
she’ll be like clinton, and spend most of her non-DC time out of NY raising money for other politicians re-elections

  28. Russell December 29, 2008 at 1:39 pm #

That’s what I’m asking. What about her do you think makes her the best option? I do not think she’d be considered at all if it weren’t for her father or uncles or the family name. What has she done that sets her apart on her own?

And don’t you think it’s a pathetic statement if no one on the Democratic side of the aisle in a very blue state is a good option?

  29. Restaino December 29, 2008 at 1:44 pm #

I think Cuomo is a good option; Suozzi decent option…Kennedy just embodies the same message as President Obama. I think that is very important

  30. Russell December 29, 2008 at 2:07 pm #

Okay, but what has she done?

  31. buffalomom December 29, 2008 at 2:48 pm #

@ Russell – Too much going on right now to really answer in great length. I will tonight.

    But in the meantime…

I see a threat from downstate Republicans with regard to this seat. I think NYS is very blue and the Ds should be okay… but you never know.

I think Caroline could do a tremendous job both serving the people of NYS – up and downstate – and think she could raise a boatload of money to win enable a strong re-election campaign.

There are many Democrats in NYS who are fine in my book but no one really jumps to the front of the recommendation line. I have said time and again, Higgins is doing a good job in Congress. I think he should stay where he is and keep up the good work on behalf of upstate. I like that my Congressman is on Ways and Means.

(BTW, you think Higgins wouldn’t start licking downstate boots if appointed? He’s need the money even more than Caroline. His tongue would fall off from all the licking.)

To get things done, you have to have some clout. The Kennedy name has it. I’d rather have someone like that representing me in DC. I have taken the leap of faith that she has the right motives, skills and inteligence to do the job. Maybe that is where we differ. I’d bet there are a lot of powerful people out there who would respect her and answer her calls. Brian Higgins? Byron Brown? Pahleeease.

Heck, I like Louise but she isn’t part of the discussion.

I, sadly, see no one in upstate qualified to take the seat. No clout. No money. No chance.

I want a winner. That to me is someone with education, polish, clout, respect and the right motivation. I’m tired of all the losers we have representing us. I’m for Caroline.

Doesn’t anyone around here get the concept of pragmatism? I mean, if Brian Higgins or Byron Brown were stellar statesmen, okay, I’d talk. But really. I’d rather take my chances on someone who has a great deal of potential in my book than same old, same old.

  32. buffalomom December 29, 2008 at 2:52 pm #

@ Russell – she has done nothing in the public eye. Her mother moved her and her brother out of the country since she believed “they were killing Kennedys.” She was raised differently than the rest of us. Hers is truly a singular experience none of us can understand. I sort of think it’s like the bulbs I planted in the fall. They’re frozen and when the time is right, they will bloom. Trite? Maybe. But that’s where I’m at vis-a-vis Caroline.

  33. Russell December 29, 2008 at 3:10 pm #

Whoa, that’s not only trite, but it’s a very scary thought. So what you’re saying is that she had a kind of upbringing no one else can relate to. It was very unique and even removed from our shared history. With that in mind, how could she possibly represent us? If we cannot relate to her, how could she possibly relate to us and address our needs and concerns? That’s even worse than I pictured it, but thanks for bringing it up. It makes me shudder.

Before you posted that Caroline is not one of us, I had 3 main concerns for potential problems with her in the Senate from NY (not even going down the worn downstate/upstate road). First, she’d be in way over her head and would just get trampled. Second, she’d get way too caught up in national politics and would do little specifically for NY and much more for the national Democratic Party. Finally, she would not be respected by her Senate colleagues. They’d just see her as an empty-suit figurehead of nastalgia who offers little substance or clout. She’d get an occasional bone tossed her way, but she’d have no real position of substance and no real clout.

Any one of those scenarios seem quite plausible to me. Sure, she could actually surprise us and show a totally different side from what we’ve seen from her so far and become a real power-broke. Instead of gambling on that, I think we in the state and those in your party would be much better off with someone that’s been tested, has some real experience and clout and has shown us he can get things done. I think Cuomo would be a far, far, far better choice to represent us and better serve the needs of your party.

That said, I don’t get why you praise Higgins in one paragraph and bash him in a later one. And if you’re really concerned with not supporting the same old, same old in this state, maybe you should stop voting straight party line.

  34. Don December 29, 2008 at 4:46 pm #

What does Paterson want in a Senator? What do we want? Paterson is nuts if he doesn’t value the electability and the “boatload of money”. Selecting anyone else could negatively influence many voters enamored by the Kennedy mystique. Going with her is good for Paterson – what does he care what is good for us?

We should want a Senator with a lust for power; a delight in the infighting that will advance her and her causes. But for a lifetime she has sensibly avoided the process. It is with the Obama enthusiasm that she now thinks she has something to give. Paterson shouldn’t care. We get a Senator who can’t be less effective for upstate than her predecessor. If she flops we get a race in two years – if she has success we get a Senator who seems substantially less cynical than me – which undoubtedly is good.

  35. Eisenbart December 29, 2008 at 4:55 pm #

I agree with you Russel. She is absolutely 100% perfect for NYS, Hillary Clinton paved the way for people like Caroline Kennedy when we voted her in. Slippery slope of politics.

  36. TheRover December 29, 2008 at 9:13 pm #

Democrats care about two things and two things only, electability and fund raising. Kennedy has/can do both. Hilary and Obama are two of the biggest do nothing/know nothings to ever walk the halls of government, yet look where they are. Economics? Who cares! National Security? Blame Bush! Constituents? Don’t make me laugh.

What has she really done? Absolutely nothing but that doesn’t matter. None of them have ever done anything.

  37. Jim Ostrowski December 30, 2008 at 3:24 pm #

It’s unfair to coast on your Dad’s coattails. Andrew Cuomo for Senator!

  38. Restaino December 31, 2008 at 9:55 am #

    @ Jim O…you are kidding …right??
