Paterson’s Methodology

19 Jan

It is, quite frankly, less fair to the taxpayers of New York State than American Idol. I understand that Paterson has the absolute right to make this selection, but I can’t fathom why – in this climate – he would permit the uncertainty to go on and on this long.

And if the selection is, as rumored, Caroline Kennedy, then the wait is even less justified and just Paterson jerking the whole state around.

It would be inappropriate for Paterson to name anyone before Clinton resigns her seat.

She needs to be confirmed for that to happen, and the earliest that THAT will happen is tomorrow afternoon.

    This choice came down to:

1.) Paterson eliminating his primary competition in the next election (Cuomo) by choosing him to be Senator. In the process, pissing off the President Elect and one of the most powerful fund raising machines in Democratic politics. Not choosing Caroline at this point would be a huge slap in the face to her and her family. Not a smart move for a guy who just two years ago went hat in hand to Byron Brown to win a slot as minority leader in the State Senate.

    or

2.) Picking Caroline Kennedy to curry favor with the President Elect and tapping into one of the most powerful fund raising machines in Democratic politics in order to beat the snot out of Cuomo next time around. Take some short term heat from the hoi poloi which will be forgotten in three months because people in New York like to be fucked (sans lube) by their politicians.

    or

3.) Pissing everyone off and picking an upstate congressman/mayor that won’t win in 2010 because he/she lacks the name recognition and connections to raise the money in order to win.

Which would you choose? Well, if I were him, I’d choose myself to fill the seat, honestly.
