Poor Return on Investment

28 Jan

1. If you rob a pizza deliveryman in Buffalo, you are hardly an enterprising criminal. Knock off a bank, maybe. But a pizza deliveryman? What are you going to make off with? A $20? Some pizza and wings?

2. If you rob a pizza deliveryman in Buffalo, are you really going to expose yourself to a gun-related felony?

3. Apparently, you will expose yourself to a gun-related felony – actually firing shots, no less – and you will make off with a large pie and 25 wings. That’s got to be the most pointless armed robbery in recent history.

Pointless? This venture was more successful than those made by many WNY investors recently. Also, it seems rather typical for that region. I attended a tennis match in Riverside Park (one of my more bizarre affairs) and almost donned a flak jacket.

I can’t disagree with anything in your post, Alan.
In 1994 in Newport News, VA so many pizza delivery people were being held up at gunpoint that undercover police started delivering pizzas. Until 2 of them got shot, and one of them was killed.

The background of the shooters? Both born to single mothers, both raised in the projects, both got head start and free school breakfast and lunches after a taxpayer paid bus ride both ways. Both dropped out of school before 10th grade. When their single mothers could no longer control them, and they could no longer get what they felt they deserved for free, they got guns and took the money from people just trying to earn a living, doing a job most of us care not to do. And if someone got killed, that’s fine–just as long as they got what they wanted.

The race of these 2 shooters is irrevelant. It’s a story you can hear in any correctional insitution repeated over and over by hundreds of different people that are now locked up.

The net result of “Spreading the Wealth Around” to make people’s lives better.
These two were on the government dole from conception until they made a more permanent arrangement with the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Instead of being taught to study hard, get an education, and work you butt off to be successful, they were taught to let the government take care of them, just like it took care of their parents. But government falls short in not giving them everything they wanted.

Social Welfare Spending—a real bang for the buck in thousands of cases like this.

Terry–Kevlar and Glock are now recommended for any trip into Riverside.
From 1957-1975 there wasn’t one shooting or homicide in Riverside. A few years back I read a murdered body was dumped on Tonawanda and Laird.

I got my mother out of Riverside, where she had lived for 78 years, and got her somewhere safe. I no longer drive through the neighborhood I grew up in, because I’m not looking to be a target. And the way the homes and storefronts have gone to hell. It’s just too depressing. I just pull up on Niagara street to go pay my respects to 12 relatives I have buried in St Francis Xavier Cemetary and then get the hell out. There’s really nothing left anyway.

When I delivered pizza when I was in college, I would often have between $750 – $1000 in my pocket…especially on a busy night.

republican suburbs look nicer, but the crime there is under reported. Not this kind of run and shoot crime, just your run of the mill mass murders (timmy Mcveigh) or heroin addicted prostitute daughters.

Please show me the back ground of the shooters instead of just your hateful postings, sure some poor kids turn bad. but not all.

So instead of eating free breakfast and lunch at school, these children should have “worked their butts off” to provide for themselves? Instead of attending Head Start, these 4 year olds should have “worked their butts off” to prepare themselves to start school?

Here’s a hint: when you’re reading Dickens, the characters with names like “Gradgrind” are the bad guys.

The only way Hank could read Dickens is if it came out in the Illustrated classics comic book series. I don’t think Head Start had a damn thing to do with their choice to rob delivery men.

Hank is right on about Riverside. I got lucky and sold our home of 35 years in 2007. We watched the neighborhood decline from the mid-80’s until it reached ghetto status. There is nothing left there except the trash that moved in and those too poor to get out. We witnessed a stabbing on Tonawanda St. while at at little league baseball game in Riverside Park in 2005. You do need kevlar and a glock to live there or even visit. The drivers from Pat’s Pizza on Ontario St. have permits because these kind of attacks started years ago.

Small thinking has always been very large around here.

Colin, you are deliberately misrepresenting what Hank accurately is implying. When teachers are too lazy to drill lessons into students, and they invent other things to focus on like “self-esteem” so they can go home without putting in a real day of work, students seek the path of least resistance, drop out, get high, and do stupid sh*t like rob pizza deliverers. Students know that learning is hard, even though they resist it, and if they are not getting taught, they know they are getting gypped.
