The Jokes Write Themselves

Some people should stick to collecting quarters.

But seriously, threats like these directed at Rus Thompson are astonishing, coming from a guy bitching that he might lose his $21/hr job collecting quarters through a system that should either be (1) abolished; or (2) completely automated, given the fact that it’s 2009 and we’re using medieval technology.

Someone call the whaaaaambulance. Good thing he’s up on charges.

I agree with this post, but please treat the toll takers with respect. They are just doing a job and dont need to be screamed at or have change thrown at them. If you need to vent, please kick you pit bull. Or better yet, hand them pennies!!

I’ve never been rude to them, and now that I have ezpass don’t even interact with them at all

but boo hoo if they get yelled at while making $21/hr
try working a tech support call center for half that and getting sworn at every day

    seriously, they make $21/hr?
no wonder the state is bankrupt and they keep raising tolls
that should be a $10/hr job

Tech support jobs maybe shouldn’t be $10.00 jobs either if you consider the profit margins of the corporations employing these people and the skils some peope working them possess. The great neo-con solution to everyone’s problem is shut up and take a pay cut or we’ll find someone who will. This toll taker could have contacted Russ and said Hey what about me ? My livelihood depends on that toll and a civil discourse could have occurred. May be not I know. But why the fuck is everyone’s solution to everything these days a matter of hostility and a power play ? I have no problem with a toll guy taking 21 an hour it’s a shit job and they do take grief and exhaust fumes. My RN wife earns a little more than that and has patients who believe it is their god given right to insult her, threaten her and her co-workers. She is professional and compassionate yet it makes no difference to too many of the public. Same people would never dream of talking to an MD this way but somehow it’s o.k. to do it to a female nurse. Since 2000 the American paradigm in politics business and societyhas been tough shit pal my way or the highway. I am looking forward to the time where I can believe we’ve grown out of it and adults acting like adults becomes the norm.

The best part of EZPASS is not having to deal with toll takers. Most of them were nice people, but the ones that weren’t were miserable. There was also the guy at the south Grand Island Bridge who reached into your car for the (then) fifty cents.

I completely agree. From what I have seen of Rus, he seems like a straight shooter. Probably could have met over a beer …..

It’s a thankless job, but when I pull up and have to wait while they either gab on the phone , or gab to the person in the next booth it does tend to piss me off. That hand should be waiting for my money or have a ticket in it when I pull up, period.

Interesting fact, Rus Thompson is actually 33.

unfortunately, tech support jobs are created by companies with a profit motive. GOVERNMENT has no such motive.

I’m surprised that there actuall ARE tech support jobs still in this country.

There are plenty of “Shit Jobs” that actually require expertise and a high functioning mentality that sure as shit don’t pay 21.00/hr.

A few years back I watched about 20 minutes of discourse between Rus and Joel Rose. THAT was interesting,. Both held their own, both made their points, and netiher walked away with a bad taste for the other. Rus isn’t afraid to talk to anyone about the causes he supports, I think that’s awful obvious too.

And there are many people living lives in Buffalo that don’t make 21.00/hr.

Do GI Bridge toll takers HAVE TO LIVE ON THE ISLAND? I’d think not. Plenty of housing in buffalo available for under 40K, What’s a mortgage on that? 400/mo tops? If you make 21.00/hr you can afford your own house. Just not on the Island.

I don’t feel sorry for this dumbass at all. scores of toll taker jobs could be eliminated through attrition using new technology. And this jackoff makes death threats that could have included the man’s family?

This toll collector has to be FIRED period. Those threats were very serious. Does this idiot have a way to track people thru ezpass or plate numbers? This idiot is dangerous. He must not work for the thruway for he has access to to much of our privacy. If the union disagrees then transfer him to nyc. How can the thruway authority possibly keep this email terrorist.

I am not sure what the fulltimers make but the parttimers make $10.00 per hour. and are not eligible for benefits. I hate to see anyone loss their job, especially in this economy but it seems the whole purpose for collecting the tolls is to finance the toll booths. If they really need the money to maintain the 190 they should move the tolls to the Grand Island side beyond the Beaver Island exit. That way there are less jams getting on the bridge and the the people going to Grand Island have a means of avoiding the toll. The tourists passing through on the way to Niagara Falls get stuck with the toll. (Sticking it to tourists is how the Southern States raise money without taxing the citizens.)

Here’s an idea, forget about taxing Res cigarettes, instead move the Grand Island Tolls down to Rte 5 and Rte 20 and collect tolls there.

As for Thompson, the guy is kind of a loose cannon but at least he speaks his mind without sinking to personal attacks. He shouldn’t be subjected to veiled threats.

    This is my favorite part.
“If you are lucky enough, you may be able to get a decent apartment or find a very inexpensive house to rent or buy, because your net pay is almost half of what you gross.”

I hope this man never finds his way to the privet sector, he’d never make it.
