Main Place Mall – It’s Failtastic!

1 Jun

Becky from Clarence Grad 72 took a trip to the Main Place Mall, and posted some pics and some reminiscences. The only thing I think of whilst strolling through the Main Place Mall is that it needs the Aud Treatment®. Just rip it down.

In any event, this made me laugh:

The “All About Buffalo” icon upstairs looks rather lonely, like “I stepped out of the nickel for this??”

I think it stopped being a mall and became an office building about 10 years ago. Used to be a hoppin place not too long ago

Amazing that they were able to take photos. Main Place Mall supposedly has one of the most strictly enforced “no photos” policy of any mall in the area.

In one of the more ironic marketing policies, on the one hand the Main Place Mall has a history of misbehavior by teenage “customers”, which discourages adult clientele.

On the other hand, the Mall replaces departing tenants with … sneaker stores and urban apparel stores. Which attract whom?

Shoe stores are always the last to leave dying malls.

A new scrubs store just opened up… so if you’re a nurse, and you happen to be walking through the Main Place Mall on the way to… never mind that. Am I hallucinating or was there once a Gap there, too? A long, long, time ago, I mean? The mall is a thoroughfare for me. Even the food court is to be avoided!

If the Buffalo needs a lottery ticket, he’ll be set.

I went to the Main Place Mall once. I wanted to go just to say I went. No one wanted to go because there was nothing there. It is more office building than mall.

So it was mid day during the week and there was more people than I figured would be there. One thing I noticed is there was shit tons of security people, no stores, and it wasn’t very big.

Then we stopped to get pizza and sat down and there was a fight. Two of the ghettoes woman fighting over the ghettoest shit I’ve ever heard… babies daddy or something. And then 6 security people showed up to break it up. Not gunna lie it was pretty awesome.

The Gap! I forgot all about that. Cavages too, with Carl Russo working behind the counter at Christmas in between shifts at 97Rock.

When I worked down in that area I used to go to the food court for lunch and then wander around and try to guess what the stores used to be. Some were easy (The words “Radio Shack” are lighter from where they were once covered by a sign) while others are just mind boggling.

There’s still some good things there. The food court is Hoppin at lunch, as is the Gino and Joe’s downstairs. The Buffalo gift shop is flat out awesome. I do miss the Waldenbooks though, it was nice to grab a magazine and go upstairs for lunch.

I think I read in the paper a few years back that most of the empty parts of the building is where an internet hub for much of the Eastern Seaboard is based.

I recently read an article that the capacity of the “mall” is was at a bustling 37% (I can’t recall the publication), however, with That Store Which Sells The Buffalo Stuff and That Place With The Cards and Gifts leaving…

Back in the early 90’s, I remember taking the 5 downtown to shop at Stuarts, G&G, Chess King, Camelot Music and Waldenbooks before hitting Market Arcade for a matinee…

The “mall” is busy during lunch, however during the winter I cut through there to get to work and it’s like a ghost town… that lone morning security guard pretty much just hangs out in front of JP’s, if you want to get more photos… just sayin’.

What they should do is have the entire mall cater to business. Have a post office and fedex storefront. Office Supply store, one of each major bank or credit union there. Make it so the people who work in the towers do not have to leave if they do not want to.

How is the tenancy in the tower anyway? Hotung chase out anyone else?

Was there this afternoon. Needed a place to make a bunch of cell phone calls — indoors as it was a bit chilly out — and remembered how dead the upper floor is after lunch. Sure enough, I was able to walk around making calls while seeing nearly no one. The buffalo didn’t seem to mind (since I wasn’t calling on his nickel).

The scariest moment came when I ended up down by the tower end around 4:30PM. I turned around just in time to avoid being crushed by a herd of County clock-watchers fleeing the Rath Building. I’m talking a solid wall sweeping down the corridor — yikes! — there were so many moving in such earnest, at first I thought there had been a bomb scare or something.
