Pam & Jim Get Married, eh?

25 Sep

The local tourism folks and the Niagara Falls people have been all atwitter about the fact that Pam Beesly and Jim Halpert – two fictional characters from TV’s The Office – are getting married in Niagara Falls, NY.

The team never once considered the Canadian side of the Falls, Berti said. “It never even crossed their minds.”

The funny thing is that they have a phony wedding website up, and it has a “things to do in the area” section.

With the exception of the Maid of the Mist, which is binational, every single “thing to do” is located on the Ontario side.  Waterpark, butterfly conservatory, Bird Kingdom, Casino Niagara, Floral Clock, Lundy’s Lane Historical Museum – like I said, everything’s on the Canadian side.

Except for one.  Dave & Busters.  They listed Dave & Busters – a Chuck E Cheese’s for adults.  There’s only one in the Niagara Falls “area”.  It’s at the Eastern Hills Mall in Clarence.

I’d say that the people in charge of Niagara Falls, NY tourism should take this all as a lesson.  They got a boon – a popular TV show sets a big event in town, but there’s nothing “to do” in the area.  Not even the hot-weather ice rink made the cut. But a Clarence restaurant did.

Niagara Falls could market a mile-long stretch of their Main Street as an urban ghost town. With the exception of a Burger King and a bookstore, there is nothing but empty storefronts, an abandoned theater (that has been an on again/off again site for night clubs), and a 3-story abandoned Jenss store. It’s really something to see.

Wow tuco, whens the last time you been to NF, its way different now on main. The have a huge police station now, and a new theater opening soon. But thats ok, I still think of Chippawa street being filled with whores.

that would be Chippewa street. And you probably aren’t old enough to remember the whores and winos.

NF USA is a State and National embarassment. Corrupt politicians in bed with organized crime have made it what it is. Hell, Times Square in the 60’s and 70’s was no better and in some ways worse. Look at it today. If NYC can do it, Why can’t NF? For that matter, look at what Vegas was like from the late 40’s to the late 70’s, and what it is today? Change CAN happen. In both NYC and LV, the organized crime element was removed from the area. Owners of businesses in Times Square and Las Vegas didn’t get their funding from the Teamsters, underwritten by a huge Italian wearing see through socks. The Hotels in Vegas in the 60’s had a classier, better dressed clientele than today, but they make a LOT more money there now.

yes hank i am old enough, which beings up another point. How the fuck did you grow up poor in the sixties in western NY? Jobs were every where factory, office etc. You could quit one job walk across the street and get another it was that easy. Its hard to believe you were poor unless your family has character issues like gambling or drunks, which would explain alot.

I don’t think you’re making too big a deal about it. You’re talking about a link on a fake wedding site, of characters on the show. It would be one thing if they missed the opportunity for anything state-side on the show itself (we’ll see when it airs), but the little website thing is irrelevant. Anyone who would actually visit that site, would also be able to Google Niagara Falls and get all sorts of information about area attractions.

This is a silly thing to complain about. The site is obviously for only hardcore fans of the show, and doesn’t even have links to any of the things they mention. Even the Dave and Buster’s thing is almost tongue-in-cheek. Using this example to say the tourism board isn’t doing enough is retarded. The way you write it, if the tourism board isn’t on top of every comment an imdb post of the old movie Niagara, then they should be fired. Stop whining. Anyone interested in actually visiting Niagara Falls can find out about attractions online. If Buffalo really wants to capitalize on tourists to the falls, we should decriminalize marijuana and prostituion and open up a red light district downtown.

I’ve been saying this for years and the second it happens, I’m apartment hunting in Buffalo and moving back.

The real joke is that everything in The Office is a joke. NF is the kind of place that you get married if you are a low level staffer in a Scranton branch office for a dull company.
