Tim Howard's Radio Ad

21 Oct

Yesterday, our current Sheriff aired a radio ad that touted the fact that he captured the Bike Path Rapist, Altemio Sanchez.

That’s nice. Except it wasn’t just the Sheriff’s Department, it was a regional task force that brought Sanchez down. Officers from the Amherst Police Department, Buffalo Police, Erie County Sheriff’s Department and N.Y. State Police participated in the task force.

Although Sheriff’s Detectives did amazing work in cracking the case, on the day that Joan Diver went missing – September 29, 2007 – he told the Sheriffs where she likely would have gone running, judging by where her car was parked. Sanchez had moved Diver’s SUV as the search for her commenced. The Sheriffs immediately treated Diver’s husband as a suspect and commenced a search which ignored his recommendation; a recommendation the deputies considered suspicious because of its detail. Scientists are known for detail.

The Sheriff’s office called off the search for Joan Diver on September 30th. The next day – October 1st, Tim Howard was taking in a Bills game while community volunteers continued searching for Joan Diver. She was found that day by a boy scout troop.

That’s not something to be proud of. Not even a little. I’m amazed that Howard is using it in an ad for his re-election.

We know now Joan Diver was killed immeadiately by that animal Sanchez so calling off the search wasn’t as big of a deal as the lack of a search in Cheektowaga this past week. A elderly lady with dementia walks away from her home and Cheektowaga PD don’t launch a search for her. She was found yesterday, a mile from her home, dead in a ditch. Where was Glascott and his outstanding “police abilities”? This woman would probably be alive had they tried to find her. Instead he was on TV last night saying they thought she would find her way home on her own, there was no reason to be concerned. Considering Glascott would have to deal with all kinds of mental sicknesses in the Holding Center, do you want him making the kind of decision he made regarding this lady?

    • Alan Bedenko October 21, 2009 at 9:37 am #

Well, if someone with dementia escaped from the holding center, that’d be par for the course under Tim Howard, right before he passes the buck. Also, no one knew Sanchez had killed anyone on the day Joan Diver went missing because he wasn’t a suspect at the time. The husband, who told deputies exactly where to look was, however, the prime suspect because he’s good with details and knows his rights.

The woman in Cheektowaga wasn’t even reported missing until a week after he disappeared. Doesn’t seem to be Glascott’s fault.

  2. buffaloobserver October 21, 2009 at 8:20 am #

This man Howard is shameless. Unfortunately, his radio ad might work. Glascott fails to inspire.

  3. Haterade October 21, 2009 at 9:48 am #

    Stevie, Stevie, Stevie ….

The family in Cheektowaga didn’t tell the police until a week after the disappearance, and then there was no mention of any location at all. Contrast that with the info that Howard had…. Is there really any comparison? I know Tim was obligated to use as much of the county taxpayers money and resources to help his brother who runs the Bills security (thus leaving only 5 patrol units for the entire county) that Sunday, but the Diver family deserved better. Typical of you to completely ignore the facts and try to deflect blame. Tim has taught you well.

  4. Haterade October 21, 2009 at 9:54 am #

    Another thing I don’t quite understand …

Sheriffs Detectives help in a case = Tim takes credit

Sheriffs deputy screws up = why hold Tim responsible when he had nothing to do with it.

  5. Steve October 21, 2009 at 9:56 am #

@Pundit…You can’t fault law enforcement for initially focusing on the husband. Look at the statisticts in these cases. Most of the time it is the husband. I happen to know a bit about the husband and he didn’t help himself during those few days. I’ll leave it at that. Think about it, even if the woman was reported missing a week later, wouldn’t it begood police work searching at least a mile around the house. It took highway workers to find her accidently. How far can a old lady get in the weather we had at the time?

    • Alan Bedenko October 21, 2009 at 10:09 am #

I know a bit about the husband, too. He was frantic, distraught, trying to find his loving wife and mother of his kids. He was smart, detailed, and – above all – innocent.

Hope the Sheriffs had fun at the Ralph.

  6. Steve October 21, 2009 at 10:10 am #

@Hate>>. I was wondering where you were this morning. Sleep in on your taxpayer funded pension? By the way, how much overtime did you rackup in those final 3 years to boost your pension? Don’t lie, we can check it out.

    • Alan Bedenko October 21, 2009 at 10:20 am #

Steve – for whom do you work?

  7. Steve October 21, 2009 at 10:15 am #

@Pundit You do know the Sheriff has to provide security at the stadium? Did you forget the county owns the stadium and is bound by contract to supply security? You’re to busy caught up in this political bullshit. Typical Dem tactics.

  8. Marc Odien October 21, 2009 at 10:15 am #

  9. Haterade October 21, 2009 at 10:21 am #

@Steve – Nope, didn’t sleep in, just had other things to do unlike you.

The county does not have to provide the level of security that it DOES. Could that possibly have anything to do with who runs the Bills security? Nah, of course not. Also tell me why jail administrators get paid OT to “work” at Bills games?

  10. Haterade October 21, 2009 at 10:23 am #

One more question Steve …. if there is a search for a missing woman, why call it off to go to the Bills game? Couldn’t they do BOTH?

  11. Steve October 21, 2009 at 10:28 am #

@Hate You forgot to answer the overtime question.

  12. Steve October 21, 2009 at 10:30 am #

@Pundit I work for a private business. I know that info will break Hate’s heart cause he’s hellbent on me working for Howard.

    • Marc Odien October 21, 2009 at 10:40 am #

Just because you work for a “private business” doesn’t mean you don’t work for Howard too, you hack!

  13. George Costanza October 21, 2009 at 10:40 am #

Steve is more likely Howard “campaign manager” A.J. Baynes, Jr., who “works” for his dad when he is not hanging out with buddy Steve Pigeon in his and Tom Golisano’s new political campaign organization/fund. Is that you, A.J.?

  14. Haterade October 21, 2009 at 10:44 am #

    @Steve …. 150K

Does your boss at this “private company” know you spend most of your day on this and other sites defending the craptastic record of Tim Howard? Or is that the purpose of it?

  15. mike hudson October 21, 2009 at 11:53 am #

howard by 12 points. god this is pointless.

  16. Byron October 21, 2009 at 12:57 pm #

Yes, BP, it’s pointless to criticize public officials who are assured of remaining in office.

  17. Steve October 21, 2009 at 2:06 pm #

@Hate Glad to see you worked the system nicely and screwed the taxpayer. I knew you have lots of guilt…remember Hudson’s advice…

  18. Steve October 21, 2009 at 2:08 pm #

@Marc Did you get John’s check? Its all about pay for play on this site. Oh I’m sorry, I’m sure it was in cash.

  19. Derek J. Punaro October 21, 2009 at 2:10 pm #

There are an awful lot of Howard signs down on the south end of the county, and almost none for that other guy. He better step things up if he’s going to have a chance.

  20. Steve October 21, 2009 at 2:24 pm #

Oh boy…its all about the signs now…get to it Dems….more signs. Don’t worry, we know he’s never run a police force, we know he has a 2 year degree, we know he comes from a dept that has had many complaints about civil rights (mostly minorities), we know there are no black police officers on his force, we know we can win…just get out the lawn signs!

  21. Adam K. October 21, 2009 at 2:24 pm #

Punaro – there’s like 17 people in the south end of the county. well over half of the vote comes from Amherst, Cheektowaga, Tonawanda and Buffalo. Add in West Seneca and Howard starts at a huge disadvantage based solely on party affiliation. This isn’t Barbara Miller Williams v. Pat Gallivan here (She lost, I believe it was 83-17). This is proven incompetence that has been all over the media.

  22. Hank October 21, 2009 at 3:01 pm #

    Jesus, when’s the election already?

  23. Steve October 21, 2009 at 3:14 pm #

@Pundit Now I’ve lost all respect for you. I just heard the commercial. Exactly where in the commercial does he take credit for capturing Sanchez? Typical Dem work again. Exaggerate, tell lies, run and hide and repeat the steps. You’ve lost all credibilty.

    • Alan Bedenko October 21, 2009 at 3:19 pm #

@Pundit Now I’ve lost all respect for you.

      Like I care.

I just heard the commercial. Exactly where in the commercial does he take credit for capturing Sanchez? Typical Dem work again. Exaggerate, tell lies, run and hide and repeat the steps. You’ve lost all credibilty.

Um, the whole fucking ad is him taking credit for capturing Sanchez.

  24. mike hudson October 21, 2009 at 4:38 pm #

this whole thing reminds me of, um, last month, when, with straight faces, wnymedia, artvoice etc. were telling people that the brown-whats his name race was going to be incredibly close and that what’s his name might even eke out an upset win. it was never close, as anyone with access to the polling data knew, but who cares, it made for a bloggerific story — remember geoff kelly’s breathless updates on just how close it would be? — but ended once real people actually started counting real votes.

i have been mostly struck by how, in the current race, i haven’t seen anything positive about glascott. it’s all negative about howard and that’s the mark of a loser campaign. unless, between now and the election, howard is caught in bed with an underage boy or somesuch, i would take real money bets on this race and give five points.

  25. marc October 21, 2009 at 4:41 pm #

hey Steve, even your republican colleagues seem to think there are problems in the correctional system your boy Howard are in charge of:

from a press release just a few minutes ago from Jane Corwin:

Assemblywoman Jane Corwin (R,C,I-Clarence) today joined with her Assembly Republican colleagues to gather input and feedback from correctional professionals on ideas to improve working conditions, increase safety for corrections officers, staff, inmates, and the surrounding communities , as well as contemporary strategies for rehabilitation.

  26. marc October 21, 2009 at 4:56 pm #

I actually never believed the mayors race would be close, however with this one, I’m willing to take your bet (with the five point spread) 🙂

Despite Steve’s best effort to tie us to the Glascott campaign, these negative videos are being done by me because I WANT TO and not by the Glascott campaign.

The campaigns official commercial is out and its all positive.

  27. mike hudson October 21, 2009 at 5:49 pm #

hey marc…i didn’t believe you were being paid by barney fife or whatever the hell his name is. it’s my understanding that his campaign is so broke he couldn’t afford you, or me either, for that matter. having been so often accused of being paid by this guy or that guy myself for things i’ve written, i feel yer pain, bro.

in any event then it’s on. money, lunch, whatever. i will be interested to hear exactly why you guys think that some middle management type whose jail won’t even hold 11 prisoners would be such an improvement, something that hasn’t been addressed or articulated on this site.

  28. Haterade October 21, 2009 at 6:40 pm #

Glascott pledges to hire a professional with experience running jails. Howard has a woman who has no jail experience at any level and a degree in interior design. She also happens to be a big donor and tied to the republican party. He pledges to be held accountable, something that is sorely lacking. You hear all negatives about Howard, because frankly – that’s all there is. Just as you claim to not hear anything positive about Glascott, can you name, or have you heard anything positive about Howard? Glascott has no record as sheriff so I can only take him /judge him by his word of what he will do. I have no reason to doubt him… I can, on the other hand, judge Howard on his 5+ years as sheriff. Can you honestly say that he has done anything that would merit re-election?

I saw a Howard ad on TV. He used 3407 as a feather in his cap. Shameful IMO. The ad also proclaims him “a genuine hero”…

  29. Steve October 21, 2009 at 6:49 pm #

@Pundit Oh I guess your Clarence Police Department handled the investigation. Oh wait, one of the wealthest communities in WNY doesn’t have a PD. Who do you think coordinated the task force? Did you maybe have a bad experience with a Sheriff in your free loading town? You are so “negative Dem” that you can’t even hear. Listen to the commercial, you might learn something. How did you pass the bar?

  30. Haterade October 21, 2009 at 6:51 pm #

@ Punaro … that’s because Howard is from the southtowns. Go through Cheektowaga, Depew, Lancaster and it’s the opposite. Every Howard sign I see anywhere is on vacant land, and besides … signs don’t vote.

@Steve … relax. Take a deep breath. Re-read his comment.

  31. Haterade October 21, 2009 at 6:56 pm #

So Clarence is “free loading” ? What about Grand Island, Collins, Alden etc… are they free loaders too? Are you stating that the ECSD coordinated the bike path rapist task force?Remember, that is easy to check out!

  32. Steve October 21, 2009 at 6:58 pm #

@Hate…as opposed to Glascott’s negative campaign? Can he even articulate anything else but the holding center? If electedn he thinks he can spend whatever money he wants. Hello, he’ll have the Leg and the county Exec to answer to as well. I almost wish he would win so I can watch the big Dems, who are really pulling his strings, make him hire all their buddies and political hacks. The Dems have a huge track record of patronage and it would be a huge new source for them, if they could only win. Who are you kidding? He’ll be as bad if not worse than anyone else who had the job.

  33. Steve October 21, 2009 at 7:01 pm #

@Hate….that nice long nap you had on the taxpayer this afternoon really got you typing. Maybe you could be John’s new secretary if he wins. I’m sure you’ve got the wardrobe.

  34. mike hudson October 21, 2009 at 7:02 pm #

having lived the life of an undistinguished sucker at the public teat, “haterade,” your opinion is worth exactly nothing here. one professional mediocrity pimping for another. so because this guy, who i assume you know but i don’t, says he’ll be better than howard, despite the lack of any empirical evidence that he would actually be better, everyone should vote for him? excuse me, but wtf? howard was awarded a medal by the new york state police for being a hero, the highest commendation they give, but it’s somehow bad for him to mention it in a campaign commercial? again, wtf? barney’s campaign commercials show him in a mahogany paneled office that looks kind of like my lawyer’s. whose office is that? it’s not a cheektowaga police captain’s office. i mean, jesus, you want to pick nits?

  35. Haterade October 21, 2009 at 7:07 pm #

@Steve First, you do know that the holding center and correctional facility make up about 80% of the sheriffs operating budget? It is the only mandated function of the sheriffs dept. It is also the source of most of the lawsuits and problems, so what would he talk about? I know it would make you and the Howard camp happy to just gloss over the problems, but it isn’t going away.

Are you saying that Howard and the GOP haven’t already made hundreds of patronage hires? Don’t pretend like that is something unique to democrats.Gimme a break.

How can you guarantee he’d be “as bad” as Howard? Why not give hima chance? Howard has had 5 years, and hasn’t gotten it done.

  36. Haterade October 21, 2009 at 7:11 pm #

    @ Hudson

I tried to not stoop to your level, but you seem to be unable to have a civil conversation. I find it funny that you have been trolling this site for months, but when it gets given back to you you cry like the bitch you are. As others have pointed out my name has been used here many, many times here over the years. You were probably too drunk to remember.

WTF does a medal given to Howard 20+ years ago have to do with the job he has done as sheriff? Nothing. If you have to go back 20 years to find a positive … you’ve got problems.

  37. Steve October 21, 2009 at 7:22 pm #

@Hate…I don’t want to give him a chance because this isn’t a “on the job training position”. I’ve got to ask you, can you honestly say that this jail stuff hasn’t been a bit politically motivated? I’ve talked to other Dems who believe it has. Every day theres another story as the election nears. How may will we see after Nov 3rd?

  38. Haterade October 21, 2009 at 7:29 pm #

First, I’m not a “dem”. I just know that Tim Howard has not done a good job. I also know that the sheriff is only as good as the people he surrounds himself with. He needs to depend on them, and Howards have done a miserable job. I honestly believe that he repeats things that are told to him by his appointees – taking them at their word – when they are not true.

As far as on the job training … isn’t that what Howard had? The fact that the State COC and Feds have been monitoring the jails, and giving variances and extensions for literally years kind of shoots holes in the political revenge aspect imo.

  39. Mike Walsh October 22, 2009 at 1:02 am #

Kind of pointless who the Sheriff is as it’s just an administrative position…. What kind of political clout does any sheriff have or ever had? ..maybe, some patronage jobs at best?

The whole department is highly unionized and a system has been in place for years. Howard(or Glascott) has little control over it.

  40. Chris Smith October 22, 2009 at 10:37 am #

Fact: Howard has proven himself in this term to be unethical, overtly political, unconcerned with human rights and incompetent. Troopers have died due to his unwillingness to properly secure his prisons. He has failed. He is a failure.

Should we re-elect a known failure? I guess if you’re affiliated with the campaign like Steve, the answer is yes.

  1. Sheriff Tim Howard – Unaccountable | WNYmedia.net - October 21, 2009

[…] Erie County Sheriff Tim Howard is running campaign ads touting the Joan Diver mruder case and Altimeo Sanchez (aka. the bike path rapist) as accomplishments during his tenure as the Erie County Sheriff. But the facts of the case prove that is anything but the truth! […]
