NY-23 Where it's Teabags vs. Republicans vs. Democrats

22 Oct

Did you know that NY-23 is now ground zero for the civil war underway within the Republican Party? After Republican Representative John McHugh resigned the seat to become Secretary of the Army, the RNC selected Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava (R, I, WF) to run for the vacant seat, while the Democratic candidate is lawyer and Air Force veteran, Bill Owens.

But there’s a third candidate in the race. Doug Hoffman is a member of the usually fusiony Conservative Party, but there’s something genuinely interesting at play here. The ultra-right conservative movement has seemingly more hatred for Dede Scozzafava than for the Democrat, Owens.

If you Google Hoffman and NY-23, you get a laundry list of conservative bloggers, pundits, and activists lining up to assassinate Scozzafava’s political career and promote Hoffman as the “real Republican”. Malkin. Bachmann. Armey. NRO. Club for Growth. Even Sarah Palin.

Notorious racist Robert Stacy McCain is freelancing (for himself) and is soliciting donations from his readers to fund a trip up to the North Country to “cover” this race. To get a sense of what the teabagger contingent really think, consider this from McCain’s site:

For an extra $4.60, I can add a 23-mile detour to Ogdensburg, N.Y., walk to the Canadian border and urinate on the other side. Just sayin’ . .

Hahahahaha! Because they’re Canadian!

This from the same crowd who earlier this year breathlessly supported the lazy Albany career hack Jim Tedisco – an empty-suited RINO if ever there was one – in the NY-20 special election.

Far be it from me to get my hands dirty while the Republicans are busy further damaging the remnants of their brand, but it’s a fascinating battle going on between the traditional northeastern moderate Republican establishment that has a libertarian streak on social issues and believes in lowering taxes and spending, and the whacko Cheneyistas who think anyone to the left of Michelle Malkin is a commie heretic.

Will the Republican Party go full teabag? They’re trying that out in NY-23. It will definitely be fun to watch the right split their vote between Scozzafava and Hoffman, thus hopefully enabling a Democratic pickup.

But for what it’s worth, Scozzafava’s campaign is packed with hilarious fail.

For instance, don’t hold a press conference outside your opponent’s campaign HQ. Hilarity may ensue.

Albany incumbents are so cute when they’re caught in tough races.

That video works better with a different soundtrack:

    Classic FAIL

You’ve seen the term RINO (Republican in Name Only).
Scozzafava is a DIABLO (Democrat in All but Name Only). She no more represents the Republicans in that district than does “Christopher Smith”. Her nomination was pressed by a now-departed GOP hack chair, and she is now being asked to step down by mainstream party people.
I hope she does, in the interest of some political diversity in NY’s congressional delegation. Pundit hopes she doesn’t, as well he should, given his belief that three Republicans out of thirty-nine Representatives poses a clear and present danger to the Union.

Sorry–Democrat In All But Label Only.

FYI, Sarah Palin endorsed Doug Hoffman.

Probably explains why she’s mentioned in paragraph 3.

I don’t know anything about the race, but to me it must be a win to show how the Teabaggers are not Republicans, and barely Conservative. This kind of cleansing is going to have to happen for us R’s to get back on our feet again. Let the Teabaggers lose a couple races, and we’ll throw them to the fringe like Dems have the Greens. And I’d rather do that cleansing in NY-23, than the national presidential election, for instance (thanks Nader for FL).

If the Repubs nominate someone like Romney we’ll see how fringe the tea-baggers are.

I don’t buy the Teabags v. Republicans storyline, no matter how much dems, progressives, and the media wish it to be so. (1) The 23rd is one of the most conservative congressional districts in the state, and the Republicans there have a 46,385 person enrollment advantage (compared to only 29,217 in Chris Lee’s district); (2) Dede Scozzafava is an establishment Albany politician, and you know damn well how fed up average voters are with Albany and anything associated with that town; and (3) as someone alluded to earlier, DS was the pick of Mondello, not the local county chairs. This is not a story about how the Republican party purges moderates from its ranks. Simply put, Hoffman represents the interests and beliefs of one of the most conservative congressional districts in the state much better than does a pro-choice, pro gay marraige Albany politician.
What do you think would happen if a pro gun, pro choice blue dog democrat ran in an urban democratic district?

Party rank and file are entitled to resist when hacks or people with alien views are pushed by the party. They are doing so in NY-23.
What will happen if Espada and Monserrate are re-nominated (not inconceivable) by the Dems? Will Pundit endorse them, as he did the risible Antoine Thompson and Bill Stachowski? Or will he endorse a non-corrupt, non-slasher “fusion” candidate on, say, the WFP line?
