From 9 – 12 It's WBEN HateRadio 930

9 Dec

The homophobic Washington Times has been engaging in a Beckian witch hunt against Obama’s openly gay safe schools czar, Kevin Jennings.  Most recently, it published an opinion piece that started out with a disclaimer, because it’s not that often that a major metro daily discusses fisting on its OpEd page.  The Washington Times is incensed over an incident that happened in Boston almost a solid decade ago.

Now, let’s stop for a second.

There is no debate or question over two very important facts, going forward:

1. Kevin Jennings never taught 14 year-old kids about “fisting”; and

2. Kevin Jennings had no idea that “fisting” would be a topic of discussion at the 2000 conference at Tufts sponsored by the organization he led.

Most of the “facts” that the Washington Times and others rely upon are predictably false.  So now we turn to Tom Bauerle’s continuing descent into birther wingnut madness, which has now devolved into patent homophobia.

I was exiting a parking ramp today when my satellite radio cut out, so I switched to WBEN. There was Tom Bauerle predictably ranting about something that’s easy for cretins to rant about – the 100 year-old pedophile who is being released to a halfway house.  A topic like that is gold to a lazy, uninspired hate talker like Bauerle, because it provides him with a platform to repeat the ways in which the pedophile should be executed.  Yeah, the “pedophiles are bad” hour with Tom.

But then he said something quite odd. He said that the pedophile is qualified for a high-level appointment in the Obama White House.

Oh.

Bauerle cited today’s Washington Times OpEd to draw the parallel.  But in 2000, Kevin Jennings was head of the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network which held a conference at Tufts about issues specifically related to the gay experience in America.

One of the workshops, titled “What They Didn’t Tell You About Queer Sex and Sexuality in Health Class: Workshop for Youth Only, Ages 14-21,” was run by two Massachusetts state Department of Education staffers and a state DoE consultant.

Basically, during the workshop, students asked a lot of very explicit questions about sex, and received explicit answers.

Jennings himself was not present for that workshop, nor was he the one giving the answers that had Bauerle so in a tizzy – questions about fisting. But Bauerle called Jennings a “pervert”, and equated him with a pedophiliac serial child molester. Bauerle feigned being disturbed about bringing this topic up at 11:00 am on the publicly owned airwaves. It was particularly lame when Bauerle made a gerbil joke to his producer before going to a commercial break.

Bauerle took his sweet time describing what fisting is over and over again, and equated the talk held at the 2000 conference to the brutal, criminal, physical rape by an old man of a 4 and 7 year-old girl.

I recorded a portion of the show, and literally the few minutes I recorded sum up what Bauerle repeatedly claimed over and over again. He was like a broken record.

Bauerle Show 12/9/09 Close

But here’s the thing. A discussion about an explicit sexual act in response to a conference attendee’s question at a workshop for gay sexuality is not the same as raping two pre-teen girls.  Kevin Jennings did not rape any underage kids. He did not fist any underage kids.  He did not order or condone anyone raping or fisting any underage kids.  For Bauerle to equate something that happened at a conference to the rape of two little girls isn’t just disingenuous, isn’t just insane, it’s deliberately provocative, designed to create or reinforce an animus against gay people in a large conservative audience.

Gay people are not pedophiles; pedophiles are not the same as gay people. Pedophiles are not the same as consenting gay men who engage in sexual activities you may not choose to engage in, or to like, or to understand.

It wasn’t News Talk 930 this morning during the mulleted one’s show – it was Hate Talk 930. As with his disgusting seditious talk back in the summertime, Bauerle has taken his influence, and fed his audience ignorant half-truths, designed to inflame. He wants his audience to hate all the things he hates, and in his sick, twisted world, Obama coddles pedophiles. Or something.

Someone get Bauerle fitted for a pair of clown shoes, because he’s gone off the deep end, and frankly I think the Bauerle advertiser boycott should be taken up by our friends at Outcome Buffalo and PinkBflo.

Bauerle gets on the air every day and declares jihad against anything and everything, parroting dumb shit he read on Alex Jones’ site or WorldNetDaily.com. He mainstreams misinformation and stupidity.  He has a right to say whatever he wants.  We have a right to demand better on the public airwaves in this community.

Boycott Bauerle’s advertisers. Listen to locally owned stations like WECK 1230.

Interesting. By Bayerle’s standard – he himself, his listeners, his employers and their families and his advertisers must be pedophiles since they are now associated with the description of “fisting”. How can WBEN allow a pedophile to be on the air?

I’m looking at that picture of the he-man Bauerle and all I can think is “girlfriend, you doth protest too much“.

One wonders what he-man Bauerle thinks about Jeff Gannon of Talon News and his time in the Bush White House Press Corps.

I know it’s off topic, but our country now has a “safe schools czar”?

    • Alan Bedenko December 10, 2009 at 6:56 am #

      Agreed. Totally fucking stupid.

    • Robert Harding December 10, 2009 at 3:26 pm #

Actually, Jennings’ title is officially “Assistant Deputy Secretary for the Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools at the U.S. Department of Education.”

I disagree with Alan’s assessment that it’s stupid, given that Jennings’ lifelong focus has been getting schools to become more accepting of LGBT students and to provide for an environment that allows these students to succeed. That should be a priority for the Department of Education and under Obama, they see it as important.

Now, calling him the “safe schools czar”, while an easier and shorter way to say his title, actually undercuts his real duties. This position was created under the Bush administration when NCLB was enacted. The position is a necessary one. Having someone in this post of Jennings’ calibur gives it credence. Anyone who knows Kevin Jennings or knows of him will know that having him in this position is a good thing. He’s the leading advocate for LGBT students in our schools and believes that a better environment needs to be supplied to them both by the schools and by their respective teachers.

“Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools”

Where are these schools? I’d like to know. The feds dealing with these issues is a joke and everybody knows it.

Bauerle’s a tool, no doubt. But I have to wonder, equally off topic…what sort of car do you drive that allows you to tape record a radio program? Gotta get one of those…

  5. Kevin December 10, 2009 at 9:39 pm #

    Still sounds stupid to me.

  6. mike hudson December 10, 2009 at 10:23 pm #

wow…one might not think, reading this post, that bauerle is only THE MOST LISTENED TO RADIO PERSONALITY IN THE BUFFALO MARKET. he is as popular as pundit is not.

    • Alan Bedenko December 10, 2009 at 10:26 pm #

The post had nothing to do with Bauerle’s popularity. In fact, I described his audience in this post as “large”.

Perhaps you’d like to go back and read it again, and then you can snidely say something about how I should “report” things, when you can’t even accurately read a blog post you’re commenting on. Or maybe you can go on and on about a photograph where you mistook Steve Casey for Gary Parenti. Either way, your trolling is as tedious as it is factually stupid and inaccurate.

Similar off-topic comments will be deleted. (IOW, You evidently have no problem with Bauerle’s homophobia, so we’ll just assume you feel the same way.)

    • Eric Saldanha December 10, 2009 at 11:31 pm #

and if anyone knows about the inverse relationship between ego and popularity, it’s Mike “My Media Empire Dwarfs All” Hudson.

    • Jon Splett December 11, 2009 at 2:12 am #

Um, call me crazy but the fact he’s the most popular radio host in the area and he’s a homophobic piece of shit who looks like an extra from a bad 90’s movie kind of makes it more newsworthy.

      • Brian December 11, 2009 at 2:26 pm #

It should also be noted that Bauerle really has NO COMPETITION! He wins by DEFAULT, especially during the bad-weather seasons. If there was another legit station going head to head, his ratings would at the very leats be cut in half.

  7. Carl December 10, 2009 at 11:07 pm #

    Three things:

    1. If it isn’t clear already, WBEN more than ever stands for We Bend Extremely Neoconservative. Seriously, is a liberal(mild or wild)even ALLOWED to host a show on that station?

    2. Steel: I can remember back in the mid 90s when WWKB made a somewhat half-hearted attempt to gun for WBEN’s listeners-and they made a dig at Bauerle…a very UNSAVORY dig at him.

    3. Didn’t Tom get the memo? The Washington Times is heading for the scrap heap. Apparently, the Unification Church(who owns the Times)is finally turning off the spigot of money…ERRR, red ink. About 40% of the reporters are being axed in preparation for it to become an opinion sheet available in a lot less places.

    • STEEL December 11, 2009 at 1:09 pm #

I don’t know anything about that. I am just saying if you apply his standard then he is what he is upset about.

      • Carl December 11, 2009 at 5:57 pm #

I happen to have the sweeper that WWKB used to dis Bauerle on tape.

  8. Byron December 11, 2009 at 11:10 am #

Here is a partial list of his advertisers.

  9. Byron December 11, 2009 at 11:11 am #

    Here, actually.

  10. Brian December 11, 2009 at 2:30 pm #

It’s EASY to appeal to people’s HATES and FEARS. It’s a LAZY host who has to keep going back to that pitiful well time and time again to entertain the sick bunch who hang on his (and Limbaugh’s et al) every word. LAZY and dishonest.

  11. SeanC December 11, 2009 at 3:28 pm #

I’m actually starting to feel bad for conservatives… these lunatics keep spewing nonsense and it’s really making them look crazy as a whole.

I must say that head shot of Bauerle couldn’t be anymore stereotypical for a tool like himself. I bet he has an Ed Hardy collection of tee shirts to go with that bad ass leather jacket. I bet just as much thought went into that hair-do and goatee than most gay men put into their appearance.

  12. Michael Schiavone December 13, 2009 at 8:30 pm #

Thank God for Satelite radio. I had no idea that goofball was even still on, Buffalo area is one of the most Democratic . areas of the state and look at the sorry state of Buffalo radio..A right wing wasteland..lol. I don’t mind right wing politics when it’s well thought out. Fake from a script, stinks

  13. BobbyCat December 14, 2009 at 10:20 am #

WBEN is certainly the voice of hate in Buffalo. It’s also the voice of “I hate democrats” or liberals, progressives, moderates, critical thinkers and more.

How many advertisers actually listen to WBEN’s hate diatribes? Probably not many. How many advertisers know they are paying for Bauerle to insult democrats in a democratic town? When I call advertisers, I ask them why they buy advertising that insults Dems. Of course they are confounded for an answer. I also ask them if they know that the WBEN signal is so weak at night, that it can’t be heard much beyond the 1st ring suburbs. That is a secret that WBEN has been harboring for many years. Advertising rates are calculating on the number of listeners. WBEN inflates it’s advertising rates by including Toronto listeners. (Its signal is clear in Toronto)
I ask advertisers how much of their customer base comes from metro Toronto. The point is, WBEN is selling ads to local businesses but listeners in most of Erie County cannot HEAR the signal.

WNY should be embarassed by WBEN hate radio.
