Blanketed

10 Jan

Most people who consider themselves sane and live on the Niagara Frontier rave about the summertime, with our deep blue skies and cool lake breezes. Our winters are long, lasting sometimes from early November until the leaves return in early May. Spring and autumn are abbreviated afterthoughts that sometimes never come.

But I’ll take the winter. The bitter cold, the endless snow. The warm drinks and indoor fun. The blue light and the muffled sound from the freshly fallen snow.

Spring here sucks; there’s no getting around that. March to May is an occasionally snowy, muddy mess. But I’d never say that our autumns are “afterthoughts”. Autumn’s the best time to live in WNY — from September to November, the air gets clearer and cooler, the leaves become amazing, and it’s generally a stunning period around here. I wouldn’t trade our autumns for anything.

Our winters make us appreciate the summer.

Living in a region that experiences all four seasons, in all their timbres, is one of the few joys of inhabiting in this joint.
