Drama at the Leg: As Fun as it is Pointless

25 Feb

In the Erie County Legislature, there is a weekly drama unfolding that is really quite entertaining.

On the one hand, you have West Seneca legislator and Pigeon acolyte Christina Bove passing on votes until she finds out how her colleagues voted.  She almost invariably votes the way Chairwoman Barbara Miller-Williams votes.

On the other hand, you have former Chairwoman Lynn Marinelli assert herself quite forcefully with Miller-Williams to the point where the exchanges between them becomes downright belligerent, with Marinelli backhandedly reminding BMW that she used to be the big cheese.  Today, BMW just about ejected Marinelli from the chamber.

Good times.

And to think that for the most part the jobs that these 15 people do are largely ceremonial and ministerial things that a computer could be programmed to do.

Thank God, however, that we that Chris “Six Sigma saved us $7.5 million” Collins doesn’t have carte blanche to do whatever he wants with impunity.

Yet.

As in “We don’t want to listen to common sense, our constituents and kill this thing now. We might anger the CE Master. Let us send it to committee to die of neglect.

The borrowing debate is not done yet. It could be discharged from the committee as early as next week.

I saw part of the BMW/LM brouhaha but missed the main event. BMW refuses to acknowledge LM’s moton requests, they went into a recess to get more information. I left then as the borrowing issue was resolved, at least for the day. When they came back from recess I was told it got more heated and that’s when BMW tried to have LM removed from the chambers. I wish I stayed to witness it. Dysfunction Junction as I tweeted earlier.

      Ray,
You could leave but BMW might order you back into your seat after she throws LM out of hers.

In the old days, the Dems would pass around a sheet telling members how to vote before the meeting. That would save Bove a lot of embarassment. These days, Steve Pigeon is too busy in Albany to play full time puppet master back home.
While I always hate to bring up painful memories, BWM was the darling of the Lenihan machine in 2005, chosen to replace George Holt. If Jim Ostrowski and I had been able to convince the Court of Appeals that homeless people have constitutional rights, the removed Holt would have won re-election and we wouldn’t have BMW to kick around today. Moral: Be careful what you wish for, today’s cherished ally is tomorrow’s bitter enemy.
Six Sigma has actually saved the County at least $7.5B and we now have so much money that Collins is considering sending us all rebate checks. If this trend continues, I intend to retire on my income from the annual County taxpayer subsidy.
