PolitiFAIL Tourney 2010, Rudnick vs Paladino

23 Mar

In what’s due to be a blow out, first seed Andrew Rudnick takes on eighth seed Carl Paladino in our mixed bag bracket.

Let’s start with the challenger. Carl Paladino, CEO of Ellicott Development, makes a living building buildings and sticking his foot in his mouth. If you aren’t happy with the status quo, then you probably agree with the sentiment of Paladino, if not the tactics. Up until now, Paladino’s greatest sins are probably building ugly oversized strip mall condo towers on the waterfront, and complaining about other developers who cash in on incentives and tax breaks . . . while he receives oodles of his own. But lucky for us, Carl is now running for Governor, allowing not only more opportunities for him to say something entertainingly dumb, but for him to increase his opportunity to FAIL as well.

Facing off against him is Andrew Rudnick, self appointed business spokesman for Buffalo. Only in Buffalo could he still be employed (at $300K+ a year), considering the amount of FAIL he has wrought in his decades on the job. As head of the Buffalo Niagara Partnership, and working with Unshackle Upstate, he has done what, exactly? I know lots of things he takes credit for, but nothing he has done. And finally, but most importantly: bowties? Really? Come on.

There is no love lost between Paladino and Rudnick, and I’m sure Paladino would love the chance to drag Rudnick through the slop. But this is a game of FAIL, and Paladino has little chance. I say Rudnick drops Paladino with some silver bullet FAIL in the first round.

This one really is tougher than it seems at first blush.

We need more details in the tale of the tape. How much, if any, of the Partnership’s money — and therefore Andy’s salary — comes from government? And, how much revenue do the various Paladino interests collect from government, tax incentives aside? (On Carl, having the govt. rent space in one of your buildings or parking lots in and of itself is not a horrible thing — it’s more the optics of Carl’s rants regarding govt. vs. the reality of his relationship with govt.)
Closer call on this than most people think. Rudnick doesn’t help his case with the bow tie and, remarkably, he looked less goofy when he had the mustache, but the whole story behind Carl has yet to be told, I think.

As much of a total docuchebag as Carl is, at least the guy DOES shit rather than just collecting money for taking credit others accomplishments.

No contest. Paladino has invested in Buffalo & WNY. He may seem certifiable, but he has done something. The three things Rudnick has done? take credit for other’s accomplishments, take governments handouts in return for nothing, and take away the region’s business cred (admittedly not much there right now) by posing as a leader.
