All About Taxes and Spending. Srsly.

13 Jul

When I was a kid in the 70s, I’d come home from school and one of the shows that would come on channel 5 would be the “Little Rascals”. They don’t show those classic shorts anymore. Thanks to cable TV, there is a glut of contemporary shows geared to kids of all ages. But the Little Rascals may have been progressive for the 30s by letting white kids play with black kids, but I distinctly recall one episode where Stymie was sweating into a pile of flour, and his sweat came out black. In the clip referenced below, “Obama” is depicted by Allen “Farina” Hoskins from the 1930 short “Teacher’s Pet”. (You can see that episode here in its entirety). I think most people would agree that, as far as that show was concerned, what was progressive for the 30s may be considered neanderthal some 70+ years later.

So to bring us around to my point today, Allen Coniglio, a self-appointed “leader” of the Ostrowski wing of the local tea party, sent this around to his small group:

If you do nothing else in your life, you must see this. It may be the funniest thing you ever see. Hurry. They have taken this down half a dozen times but thankfully, someone keeps putting it back up. [link removed]
Allen

I won’t embed the video, because it depicts Farina as Obama, makes jokes about Joe Lieberman and the Holocaust, and likens Nancy Pelosi to a whore (she is a powerful woman, after all).

I’ve only been alive for a little more than 40 years, and I can categorically say that I’ve seen literally thousands of funnier things. There’s clearly a reason it gets taken down constantly, and preservation of an 80 year-old copyright isn’t the reason why. This is the same crowd that supports an angry horse-porn aficionado and sender of racist emails whose entire platform consists of being angry.

I think racism, sexism, and anti-Semitism are disgusting and reprehensible. I can’t fathom why or how anyone takes these people seriously. These people are petrified of change, terrified of other people’s ideas, and especially hostile to people who aren’t white males. There’s nothing new about the tea party or its leaders, and the Obama administration has emboldened them to bring their deepest fears and prejudices to the surface.

Cue the 2,000 word diatribe on how his critics are trying to destroy him and liberals are the real racists.

Great coalition there, Jim O! FREEDOM!!!

I was speechless, and those of you who know me, know that doesn’t happen often.

There’s plenty “new” about the majoritarian anger at government. The majority is completely sick of Washington (and Albany!), sick of Wall St., pretty much sick and tired of being used and manipulated from all sides.

There is no party that represents them any more (I say “them” only because I have yet to vote for a major party candidate, loser that I am 🙂 ).

Jim O and crew are the “leave us the hell alone” wing of that sentiment. And sure, they’re dumbasses. But if you left them alone, they’d go the hell away. But don’t try to claim that they don’t want ideas (they have ideas, you just think their ideas are bad), or that they only want white males to have any influence (see the average tea party dope fawn over Sarah Palin).

Also, it’s disingenuous to try to claim they’re all racist and ONLY OBAMA’S AWESOMENESS “emboldened them” to display their idiocy: Witness the tidal wave of verbal filth that was barfed at Hillary starting during the first half of the 90’s and has yet to abate.

Sorry, all the “majority” is tired of is the lousy economy, that’s what an actual majority is tired of. As to new ideas, their idea of “less government” died in the same bathtub as New Orleans did, and it’s as old as the hills. They keep complaining of the government taking away their rights, but can’t point to anything, and paid no attention while GWB actually did take away their rights. These guys wouldn’t know a new idea if it bit them on the butts.

      • Jesse July 13, 2010 at 1:10 pm #

Well it’s fairly obvious that if the economy is great, people are making money and don’t give a crap about the issues.

But you’re wrong about the “less government” thing. It is only the rarest of individuals who actually WANTS a government that can blast out $166b in debt in a single frigging day, like we did a few weeks ago. I also never suggested any of it was “new” idea, only that the volume of anger is.

Nice try to throw it all back on GWB, by the way – the tea party STARTED BEFORE OBAMA. It was coming regardless of who won in 2008.

Coniglio’s idiocy (with a h/t to BP) has now been noted at Balloon Juice.

  5. Jon Splett July 13, 2010 at 2:02 pm #

Not that I’m not confident it’s racist but could you at least give the name of the video so we can find it on YouTube?

I like to make judgements about how racist things are for myself. We’re all adults here. I don’t think seeing the video is going to convince anyone to attend a Klan meeting.

    • Alan Bedenko July 13, 2010 at 2:05 pm #

Jon: I intended to post the link only, but it embedded automatically so I removed it. The video in question is this:

      • Jon Splett July 13, 2010 at 2:12 pm #

Thanks. I couldn’t figure out which one it was when I searched YouTube because a bunch of different ones came up.

Not only is it racist, it’s not funny. And not in the ‘it’s not funny because racism is wrong’ way but in the ‘the jokes read like talking points from a Sarah Palin speech’ way.

Also, pretty sure during the Biden bit, the creator implicitly says Obama deserves to be assassinated. I’m not against allowing speech like that, especially in something with (limited) artistic merit, but how exactly do a bunch of self proclaimed patriots reconcile shit like that? This is why when nutjobs at tea bagger rallies show up armed those of us with respect for legitimate political discourse get a little worried. When the rhetoric talks about assassinations and the participants are armed, it’s reason to be concerned the lunatic fringe is about to get it’s terrorism on.

    • Brian Castner July 13, 2010 at 2:26 pm #

You’re right – its not funny. Even a little. But its also had 343 views. How many of those from us? Lets not make a mountain out of a molehill – there are plenty of unfunny racists everywhere – what benefit is there in giving them a bigger stage. They don’t deserve the attention a denoucement provides.

      • Rob July 13, 2010 at 2:36 pm #

“They have taken this [idiotic video] down half a dozen times but thankfully, someone keeps putting it back up.” So it’s had many more than 343 views.

      • Brian Castner July 13, 2010 at 3:03 pm #

Yes, I can read, thank you. Do you actually believe that? That’s a canned statement put on all those crappy forwards so you actually click the link. What makes you think it is true? There is plenty of racist stuff on Youtube with tons a views. For instance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gH4ivOyO0PQ&feature=related

I think it’s important to expose, criticize, and ridicule local political “leaders” who either espouse these sorts of ideas, or think them to be salient. Or funny. Like the exposure of Paladino’s “sense of humor” as depicted through years’ worth of emails, Allen Coniglio is allied with Jim Ostrowski, and both of them fashion themselves as being leaders of the tea party, which we are continually reminded is some sort of grassroots groundswell of conservative principles rather than just an ad hoc grouping of disaffected McCain voters.

Because the local media will mention or cite or otherwise pay attention (serious attention – not mocking attention) to the local tea parties and their leaders, I think it’s of paramount importance to understand exactly whom we’re dealing with.

The next time, e.g., Jim Ostrowski appears on WBEN, you should be reminded of the fact that he is voluntarily allied with Allen Coniglio, who thinks that a portrayal of Barack Obama as a 1930s-era pickaninny is the most hilarious thing he’s ever seen in his life. That shitspray from Coniglio should soil anyone who comes into voluntary contact with him.

But this is a topic for a separate post, I think.

      • Rob July 13, 2010 at 3:32 pm #

Here is a link to a cached YT version that had 7,000+ hits; there is another (URL L too long to post) that was removed due to a copyright claim, but I bow to your superior knowledge of what emails with crappy forwards say.

      • Rob July 13, 2010 at 3:39 pm #

Oh and it looks like Rus Thompson’s site also had the video posted but it was “removed by the user”.

      • Rob July 13, 2010 at 3:48 pm #

I’m sorry, I was wrong about Thompson’s site (I think). My bad.

The video IS being re-posted to YT by the same 2-3 users, however, as I said.

  6. Clinton's Ditch July 13, 2010 at 3:40 pm #

    What a revolting video…

  7. BrianS. July 13, 2010 at 11:36 pm #

    Wow.

I actually thought that video was fairly harmless until about halfway through it when they “joked” about Biden getting elected due to a “madman’s bullet”. Pretty sick shit considering the scumbag teabaggers are the primary culprits in putting the “mad” in “madman”.

  8. Ward July 13, 2010 at 11:41 pm #

If a person were a cynic, a person might think that Alan was taking advantage of his vast African-American readership to try to energize Obama’s base, and keep it from sitting at home with its thumb up its butt in November. Sort of like the NAACP did today.
Pure coincidence though, I am sure.

  9. Mike In WNY July 14, 2010 at 12:10 am #

    Richard Pryor was a racist.

  10. Ward July 16, 2010 at 10:53 am #

New Pundit/NAACP meme: Tea Party = racist.
    Facts:
In SC the Tea Party successfully backed a woman of Indian-American descent, Nikki Haley, over three white men in the GOP gubernatorial primary.
In a SC GOP congressional primary, African-American, Tea Party backed candidate Tim Scott defeated Strom Thurmond’s son three to one.
In Florida, Hispanic-American Marco Rubio so beat up on Charlie Crist in the GOP Senate race that Crist weaseled himself into the Democrat Party–thanks to Tea Party campaigning.
    Enjoy your memes, boys.

    • Eric Saldanha July 16, 2010 at 1:01 pm #

Hey, it’s no meme. In a fantastic display of the ignorant crudeness and oblivious arrogance typical of the conservative, bitter-loser corporate types who lead this faux-grassroots movement, Mark Williams, Tea Party head, decided to respond to the NAACP’s call to condemn the obvious racist elements in the Tea Party….by writing an imaginary letter to Lincoln from the head of the NAACP asking him to reinstate slavery:

Tea Party Leader Mocks NAACP’s “Coloreds” In Online Screed

I see the coward racist has removed his pathetic attempt at satire from his site, but his words are there for anyone to see what a farce this “Tea Party Isn’t Racist” defense is.

Yeah — just like this bogus product from “Think Progress”
