Temper Tantrum Politics

Governor's Mansion (exterior)

There’s a reason all of Carl’s supporters are supposedly so angry, and it has to do with the myriad problems facing a failing state.  That must be why the Democratic state committee is acting as Cuomo’s surrogate pitbull (more like a Shih-Tzu), and why Paladino is going around literally accusing Cuomo of having no balls.

Meanwhile, a solid week has passed since the general election began in earnest and Andrew Cuomo has not been seen anywhere, or heard saying anything.  He has all but sat out one out of six weeks, and that’s basically political malpractice.

It’s as if this race is going to be decided on poorly photoshopped images of Andrew Cuomo showering or Carl Paladino as a pig at the trough.

It’s hugely disappointing that there are no issues being discussed seriously, and that Cuomo won’t engage his opponent.  Just like Paladino’s race against Lazio, and we all know how that one turned out.  I’d like for Paladino to have an opportunity to question Cuomo about his 15-year old HUD record, and I’d like for Cuomo to force Paladino to better flesh out his scorched-earth policy proposals.

As goes Cheektowaga, so goes the state.  Cheektowaga is going to go for Carl in November.  It’s the year of temper tantrum politics.

There’s temper tantrum politics and there’s acting against your own interest politics:

    … and usually they overlap.

Carl Paladino is like the school yard bully threatening to beat you up. Everybody knows that most bullies are all show and no go. The guys who do all the trash talking are usually cowards who hide their cowardice behind tough talk.

Most of us learned in grade school that the way to handle a bully is to punch him squarely in the nose and watch him run away, crying. Chances are he won’t bother you again.

True to form, Paladino’s letter to Cuomo sounds like the typical schoolyard bully with all the adolescent talk about “being a man”. That’s the talk of teenage boys, concerned with their courage, wondering if they are a man, or weather they “measure-up”? Pun intended. Its kids stuff.
Paladino’s tough talk is likely a cover for cowardice. Without question its adolescent behavior. In my experience, tough men usually don’t talk the talk; They don’t need to.

But Cuomo has a dilemma. Does he ignore this bully with his adolescent threats or does he lower himself to Paladino’s level and wrestle in the mud? If they were 13, Cuomo could bloody his nose and be done with it. But of course, these are mature men. Well, one of them is.

New Yorkers deserve to hear answers from the candidates. It’s too bad that the Buffalo media never had the courage to ask Carl Paladino any serious questions about his platform, assuming he has one. As Alan Bendenko recently pointed out, CNN’s Rick Sanchez asked Paladino more pointed questions in 20 minutes than the entire Buffalo media has in years. No one in the media has had the temerity to ask the Buffalo TV news departments why that is. The Buffalo News TV critics have been AWOL for a decade or so. So now there is NOBODY asking any questions of ol’ Carl. For example, no one has asked Paladino where he intends to slash 20% from the state budget. Specifically, which programs will get the cuts? Which programs would he eliminate? Show us the numbers. Does he support the right wing efforts to cut or privatize social security? Does he want a continuation for the Bush tax cuts? Last question: If you are acting like an asshole now, will you act like an asshole if elected?

The last panel (in particular) of the This Modern World Bbill posted above is awesome.

Ah, Another reading from the Book of Bobbycat—-Get out and see what Americans who don’t live in WNY think. Very closed minded.

Alan’s post really didn’t have a lot of speculation in it, mostly stating pertinent facts. NY Daily News online article shows a picture of Cuomo, over which is the title, ‘Can I Call Him An A**HOLE??????

If Cheney can tell Biden to “Fuck Off”, I’m sure it would be OK. When you have only 6 weeks to campaign, and your opponent has just come off a shocking primary victory, why would you waste a week doing basically, dick. Why will you not debate him??? If Carl is as much of a scumbag as Bobbycat claims he is with every freakin’ breath, Cuomo should be able to rip his ass apart, especially since Carl claims never to have debated before. Waitaminute—Cuomo has never had to debate anyone either. Hmmmmmm. Carl hasn’t because he’s never been running for office before. Cuomo has ridden the old man’s political connections into every damn dime he’s ever made, and every one of them came from the taxpayers. Immaculated and coronated as NY AG…..none of this helps. Perhaps the only way to dismantle the legislature, the Authority system, and the rest of the Bullshit that is NYS government is to initiate scorched earth. Nobody else seems to have a better idea. Some things really ARE too fucked up to fix.

Hank makes more and more sense the closer we get to November.

Andrew Cuomo has been a part of New York State government off and on since the early 1980s. To think he might be a good choice to address the dysfunction in Albany that he’s been a part of for all these years is absurd.

Suppose you need to replace your corrupt police department. If you fire every cop and hire new recruits, you will be left with a inexperienced dept with zero experience. Nobody will know anything about police work. . If every Albany bureaucrat is fired, no one will know how to run State government. Literally.

When the US Army took control of Bagdad, they fired all of Sadamn’s municipal workers. To this day the electric and the water doesn’t work. Get the point?

The tea party notion that firing everybody and replacing them with new hires is a mindless blunder. But it sounds good!! It makes people feel good! It feeds into the angry script. Saying that Andrew Cuomo is not qualified because he has Albany experience is just plain nuts.

And BTW, the name-calling is childish. Do you really think I burst into tears when you throw the insults? It’s the kind of snarky behavior that I remember from high school.

“Meanwhile, a solid week has passed since the general election began in earnest and Andrew Cuomo has not been seen anywhere, or heard saying anything. He has all but sat out one out of six weeks, and that’s basically political malpractice.”

Equally strange how the New York Times “Week In Review” does not even mention the NYS Republican primary race, Carl Paladino; neither does any other Section of the Times.

the morning-after the primary, Carl was nowhere on the front page. If a tree falls in the woods and NYC prefers not to hear it…

What are you talking about? The Times has a story “Travels With Carl”, published today, and a few more within the past several days.

Is this some dis-information campaign you are running or are you simply mistaken?

An acquaintance of mine rails against the NY Times, calling it a “propaganda machine.” I asked him how he knows that because he doesn’t read the Times. He said he learned it on Fox News.

Yeah, right, Fox News – The fountain of truthiness.

BobbyCat seems to be the one having a temper tantrum here.
