Rochester is in the process of demolishing its version of the Main Place Mall & Tower. Here’s a video from 1963 touting the Midtown Plaza Mall’s arrival.

Just to be clear the Main Place is Buffalo’s version of Mid Town which came first and was considered groundbreaking for its time.

Ah – part of my youth growing up in Brighton were the trips downtown to see the clock, and then riding the monorail around Santa’s Wonderland in the Winter. Alas, MidTown had grown sad and had outgrown its practical use. It was time to go.

There was a ceremony at 11AM today marking the start of demolition. Check the Democrat and Chronicle or Rochester City Newspaper website later today for coverage.

Joel, despite all my own happy holiday Midtown memories, I’m afraid you’re right about its demise. BTW, my apologies again for spilling my sno-cone on you on the monorail all those years ago.
