Here’s Where Carl Paladino Threatens to Kill Fred Dicker

29 Sep

(With updated video courtesy WIVB). Fred Dicker is the dean of the Albany press corps. Well-respected and thorough, he writes for the right-wing Murdoch rag the New York Post. He’s been at it for decades and has received every award available for him to receive.

As the scrutiny from press corps outside Buffalo intensifies around the locally untouchable developer, Paladino made a vulgar, pointless accusation about Andrew Cuomo’s first marriage to Kerry Kennedyolder news is hard to come by.

When Dicker confronted Paladino – a belligerent egomaniac – Paladino struck back with threats up to and including, “I’ll take you out”. Let me rephrase this:

[HTML1]

Republican Gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino threatened to murder columnist Fred Dicker.

I don’t really know what the hell Carl’s problem is – if he’s willing to go nuclear on Cuomo’s failed marriage (which ended long ago), then Carl’s protestations against inquiries into his own sordid personal life ring hollow. You can’t have it both ways. Evidently, Carl’s campaign doesn’t like that a grown woman with whom Carl slept 10 years ago was spoken to and photographed by the NY Post.

But I hope people like Dicker keep pushing, prodding, looking, and provoking. We already know Paladino doesn’t have the character to be governor. We already know he has no strategy for policy success should he win. We’re coming to learn he doesn’t even remotely possess anything approaching the temperament to handle life as a public servant.

I think Billy Batts is Fred Dicker, and Carl is Tommy DeVito, and Dicker sort of told Carl to get his f-ing shinebox.

Well, we expected an entertaining campaign and we got it.

Paladino’s next press release should simply say “The Aristocrats!”

  2. Mark Poloncarz September 29, 2010 at 10:07 pm #

Can’t wait for the debates if they are anything like Carl going at it tonight with Fred Dicker!

It might the first time on record where a candidate threatened to “take out” a reporter, at least in front of a slew of other reporters. Also, earlier today Carl said the campaign would get nastier. It didn’t take long for him to meet that commitment.

Only problem, as you noted in your twitter posts, is that the 19 million other New Yorkers are left behind as wondering what has happened to the once great Empire State. Excelsior!

    what. a. lunatic.

  4. cashdollar September 29, 2010 at 10:37 pm #

Carl go boom. Cuomo has done a hell of a Coakley impression, but Carl’s a time bomb that will go off over and over again. As you rightly point out Carl’s not used to be called out (except of course by the liberal ELITE at WNYMedia.net), he will not hold up to scrutiny. He’ll be done in two weeks. Cuomo’s a clown, but Carl’s like a drunk relative at a wedding. People are just going to turn away from him and hope he goes away.

  5. BrianS. September 29, 2010 at 10:58 pm #

“Carl’s like a drunk relative at a wedding.”

Wow. A more succinct line has not been written on this or any other blog. Nailed it. I heard a fill-in host on WBEN say he wanted Paladino to win “but for all the wrong reasons”. It was a funny line and, dare I say, where my very dark sense of humor also takes me.

  6. Matt September 29, 2010 at 11:22 pm #

Funny how Paladino’s daughter wasn’t off limits when his wife was interviewed and the campaign was trying to make him look good. (For the record, I don’t want to see kids dragged into this crap)

  7. BobbyCat September 29, 2010 at 11:30 pm #

Paladino has admitted that he thinks that benevolent dictatorships are a good way to govern. He is already acting like Mussolini. “I’ll take you out” means murder. Fred Dicker is the Dean of Albany reporters and well respected because he asks tough questions. He certainly doesn’t deserve death threats. Is there an unbiased District Attorney who will look at this threat? Perhaps a Special Prosecutor should be appointed by the Governor. We don’t need a dictator anymore than Italy needed one. God help us. This man is coming unhinged.

  8. Carl Meltdown September 29, 2010 at 11:31 pm #

Carl is having a meltdown today, probably because he saw the results of the latest Marist poll indicating that most likely voters believe he is unfit to govern. Gotta love it. This thuggery isn’t a vaudeville act. Carl has surrounded himself with thugs. Paladino’s aide Russ Thompson, Grand Island’s beloved reprobate, was revealed to have a conviction of aggravated DWI in Arizona. When a reporter confronted him about the issue about the issue, Rowdy Russ “erupted in an expletive-laced tirade and told a reporter, “I fight a lot dirtier than Carl does.” Soon after that, he hung up, but later consented to a longer interview.” (source: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/29/nyregion/29advisers.html?_r=1&ref=nyregion&pagewanted=all)

There you have it folks. You don’t have to guess that Russ Thompson is a slug by looking at him. He’s gone on the record stating so. These are the kind of goons that Carl likes to hang around with, disrespecting people and threatening reporters. It’s time to send Carl and Russ back to the Ellicott Square building so they can share a drink of solmenity over their defeat.

You’re off our Christmas card list?

  10. DJ September 30, 2010 at 12:24 am #

Older news is hard to come by? How about the NY Times reporting Rus Thompson had a DWI in Arizona almost 20 years ago.

  11. DJ September 30, 2010 at 12:26 am #

Really Bobbycat? A special prosecuter to look into the alleged death threat? Get a grip.

  12. Carl Meltdown September 30, 2010 at 12:35 am #

“How about the NY Times reporting Rus Thompson had a DWI in Arizona almost 20 years ago.”

Ha. It’s okay for Mr. Palafraudo to bring up past marriages and snap like a lunatic when someone simply asks for evidence to support his allegations, but it’s not okay to discuss criminal convictions of Paladino’s assistants when they openly admit to them in the New York Times. I’m sorry, you lose.

Rowdy Russ is out there driving. This criminal thug is one of Carl’s advisors. And don’t give me that wimpy “it happened in the 1990s” namby pamby crap. If he hasn’t had a drink, he sure resembles a dry drunk.

  13. VikingDad September 30, 2010 at 6:40 am #

I find it most disturbing at the end of this little maylay…a public admission by Paladino that he does his own “DIRTY WORK”. Wow!!!!! Did I hear that right???? Is this man wringing his hands and drooling about the fact that he wants to be in a position to take advantage of an already defunct state in where he can personally prosper. When do the blackened windowed SUV’s begin to arrive at taxpayers doorsteps spewing this gangster and his commando-esk assistants offering a choice between tax breaks or leg breaks?

No matter who is questioning, no matter what the question, ANY politician who publicly admits to “dirty work” should be considered armed and dangerous to the citizens. How sad for New York state. And people in office wonder why the taxpayers are leaving. Wow…that is all I can say.

  14. Jesse September 30, 2010 at 7:06 am #

Meldown: The point is, Alan whines that bringing back Cuomo’s marriage nonsense is “old news” but apparently thinks it’s okay to bring back Rus’ 20 year old DWI.

Blind spots are called blind for a reason, I guess.

    • Alan Bedenko September 30, 2010 at 7:52 am #

      Here’s the thing, @Jesse.

In this comment, you accuse me of being the “same kind of political [hack] you can find anywhere else.” Setting aside the very salient fact that I receive no remuneration or jobby jobs in exchange for my support of Democratic issues and candidates, you’re entitled to your faulty opinion. You called it hackery because I quite rightly called out Chris Lee for being objectively against health care for 9/11 respondents, and in favor of tax loopholes for very profitable companies doing business domestically that pay no federal income tax. You may be in favor of those political value judgments, but I’m not. Thus, I’m a hack, but you’re perfectly reasonable because you agree with Chris Lee.

Yet in this comment, in this thread, you state that I think “it’s okay to bring back Rus’ 20 year old DWI”. Really? How’s that? Because I’m asking you right now to locate for me the Tweet or blog post where my anti-Paladino mania prompted me to link to, mention, or otherwise regurgitate the New York Times story detailing the legal problems that plague Michael Caputo or Rus Thompson. I’ve written separately about horrid, corrupt, ex-politician Nancy Naples and the guy who helped Carl with his petitions, but I completely ignored the Times’ story this week specifically because I didn’t think it was important; precisely because I think bringing up a 20 year-old DWI is stupid.

So, Jesse – in two consecutive comments, left just three minutes apart, you accused me of being the same old kind of political hack, while you yourself engaged in dishonest hackery. At least my anti-Lee hackery was factually correct. You fail.

  15. BobbyCat September 30, 2010 at 8:22 am #

Once again, an out of town newspaper reporter, in this case the Posts’ Fred Dicker, gets the story about the explosive Paladino. I think the local reporters are afraid to ask Paladino these question (Ch.2′s Aaron Sakin, excepted) It would be nice to ask the local reporters why they are so afraid. Pergaments TV blog (like his NEWS column) gives the TV News depts a pass. Pergament doesn’t accept blog questions. Why not? He won’t say. He gets to pontificate his point of view, without challenge. Where can Buffalo go to put pressure on an under-preforming, lackluster media? Apparently nowhere.

  16. Mike In WNY September 30, 2010 at 10:35 am #

Carl lost his temper, big fucking deal.

    • Alan Bedenko September 30, 2010 at 10:47 am #

I’ve lost my temper loads of times. Never threatened murder, though. Maybe it’s a cultural or class thing. You can make millions, but still be a gutter-rat asshole.

  17. bill September 30, 2010 at 11:06 am #

Alan, why did you ignore the fact that Fred Dicker sent a photographer to take pictures of his 10 year old daughter, thats what the confrontation was over.

Youre a father, what would you do?

    • Alan Bedenko September 30, 2010 at 11:08 am #

Because Dicker denies having done so, isn’t the guy who allegedly assigns photographers to peep on 10 year-olds, and there’s as much proof that that actually happened as there is that Cuomo had an affair.

In other words, I think Carl’s full of shit.

  18. Michael September 30, 2010 at 11:26 am #

Alan Bedenko you wrote “Because Dicker denies having done so” in a respose to post 19. So you believe eveything one guy says but not another. Just shows how biased you are. How about you report the facts and not try to bash Paladino in every sentence of your blog?

    • Alan Bedenko September 30, 2010 at 11:32 am #

Yes, I believe what NY Post political columnist and editor says over what hyperemotional beast Carl Paladino says.

  19. Rob September 30, 2010 at 11:30 am #

The Post has published two pictures of the mother, none of the daughter, so if they “sent a photographer to take pictures of his 10 year old daughter” I guess they failed.

  20. Rob September 30, 2010 at 11:32 am #

Michael – If the Post “sent a photographer to take pictures of his 10 year old daughter” – where are the pictures??

  21. Michael September 30, 2010 at 11:33 am #

You also wrote, “But I hope people like Dicker keep pushing, prodding, looking, and provoking.
Really? You want journalists like Dick (good name for him) to provoke get in people faces. The people who got in between them was trying to stop them and Paladino was leaving. Dick was trying to go after him still ! Dick was provoking the people trying to stop the fight. I like how you removed the video.

    • Alan Bedenko September 30, 2010 at 11:35 am #

I didn’t remove the video. YNN did because it was unbranded. When I get to a computer, I’ll put in the new one.

      Nice try.

      Have a great day!

  22. Michael September 30, 2010 at 11:35 am #

@Rob . How the hell am I supposed to know. Do I work there?

  23. Rob September 30, 2010 at 11:39 am #

So they sent a photographer to take pics of his daughter but then didn’t publish them. OK. Because Carl says so.

  24. DJ September 30, 2010 at 3:30 pm #

    @ Meltdown.

Dicker simply asked for proof of what Paladino claimed? Is that what you took from that clip? To me it looked like a guy who was pushing buttons and provoking things, not unlike you.

When I posted that about the 16+ year old DWI, it was in response to Alans original post and the “old news” about Cuomos failed marriage. Bringing up the timeline isn’t namby pamby, it’s fact.Apparently you don’t know that people who have had DWI’s are eventually allowed to operate a motor vehicle again?

  25. Kevin J. September 30, 2010 at 4:46 pm #

Having 18 years of print journalism experience, I would doubt that the New York Post sent a staff photographer to shoot something in Buffalo (cost alone probably is too high); it would be more likely that freelance photographer would take any alleged photographs. I would like to know one way or another who this photographer or photographers in question are, if they are working on assignment or on speculation and if they have sold anything to the Post or other papers. Indeed, I still wonder if this even occurred.

When I worked for a newspaper, one story I was assigned was the Chelsea Noble (Nancy Mueller)-Kirk Cameron wedding in Cheektowaga. The vast majority of photographers were freelancers; newspapers and other media outlets would not have to pay for transportation or lodging, and could pick from lots of submissions. Several local photographers, some who I worked with, got some well-deserved pay from this and other assignments like the Bills, Sabres, presidential visits, etc.

I don’t know of a single newspaper, daily, weekly or whatever, where a columnist can assign a photographer to cover a story or part of a story; an editor or higher-up wold make this decision.

I have my opinions of Fred Dicker (a real good, hard working journalist and columnist who has pissed off elected officials of every party), but then, we all apparently do.

  26. Kevin J. September 30, 2010 at 4:49 pm #

Damn; in the fourth paragraph, “would” make this decision, not “wold.”

  27. Kevin J. September 30, 2010 at 4:50 pm #

Oh, for Pete’s sake, it’s in the third paragraph. Yeesh.

  28. State & Local Politicians have stolen our City from us!!! October 1, 2010 at 12:12 pm #

I can’t imagine why ANYONE would want to vote in Cuomo!! It is so insane that it simply blows my mind!!! He has been groomed to be in politics. His father ran this state into the ground for 20 years!!!! He has not come out and given his position on hardly anything. He has been hiding. His recent decision to come out from the dark corners of his world to speak to the public, is only to smear Paladino. Gee that’s an upstanding citizen! I do not think that Paladino is a perfect person. Show me a perfect person, and I will start asking HIM or HER for strength. Men cheat on their wives!!! CLINTON did it, SPITZER did it, PATTERSON did it….all these democrats that you all sooooooo idolize…are the same scum. I am so TIRED of the liberal hypocrisy!!! You are morons, and you are mindless CLONES, that think it’s “cool” to be a lefty. Shut up & actually DO SOMETHING!!

  29. State & Local Politicians have stolen our City from us!!! October 1, 2010 at 12:24 pm #

Also, The term “take out” does not determinately mean “murder”! Seriously, for people who suddenly want to act like they are “civilized” (more so that Paladino), why can’t you discuss and debate in a civil way? Making random conclusions with nothing to support the conclusion is sophomoric at best. “Take out” can mean plenty of things….i.e. “end your career by exposing you for the self-serving scum that you are”, “get into office, and end your IV of special interest juice flowing between your mouth and the anus of the people that feed you everything above your salary at the Post”, or i suppose it could mean “have you jumped in a dark alley as you leave work, and haven just written yet another slanted article so that all the mindless youth will buy your BS”.
Who knows what he meant by that?
It’s hilarious to listen to liberals complain because someone is “speaking their mind”. You are the people that are constantly carrying on about our Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, yet I have noticed over the years, that you only want to argue about them when it suits your socialist agenda. Not that the freedom to speak, and have our own opinions should be delegated to EVERY person equally. You can’t pick and chose. If you don’t want to be judged, Don’t judge others. It is so simple, yet so many people have such a hard time “living” that way. Talk talk talk….means nothing.

  30. Bbill October 1, 2010 at 1:59 pm #

Shorter State & Local Politicians have stolen our City from us!!!

    skreeeee

  31. Len October 1, 2010 at 5:53 pm #

Turning “Take you out” to “threaten to kill” makes you a FOX NEWS type hack.

    • Marc Odien October 1, 2010 at 6:00 pm #

better than a kool-aid drinking asshole like you!

    • Alan Bedenko October 1, 2010 at 6:10 pm #

I’m a fucking blogger. OF COURSE I’m a hack, dummy.

  32. Carl October 1, 2010 at 8:08 pm #

S & L: Yet more blah blah blah.

Major difference: Cuomo’s not putting himself out there as a paragon of virtue. Pally IS. He’s already been caught in at least 1 lie, possibly 2…

  33. Jesse October 5, 2010 at 12:49 pm #

Alan: I think my point here was that you were all over Paladino for bringing up old news (“older news is hard to come by”), but when old news is brought up against him (The Times’ story – see DJ in post #10) you didn’t think that was significant.

It was weak, admittedly. You hate Paladino, it’s okay. I’d just like to see more criticism aimed elsewhere, I guess.
