Access and Issues

30 Sep

When you grant access to the Buffalo News to write a puff piece about Cathy Paladino and Carl’s 10-year old child by another woman, not his wife:

and when you grant access to the New York Post to write a similar puff piece about the same subjects:

Then you can’t complain if the “kid” is made an issue in the campaign. And you can’t rightly complain if the press wants to get the other woman’s side of the story. You can’t sit down with Andrea Peyser and discuss the whole thing over a “meatball hero”, and explain how your values prevented you from suggesting abortion, but somehow permitted a decade’s worth of deception and silence to your wife.

Just saying, you can’t have it three different ways.

Which is of course why Cuomo is smart not to discuss his marital woes, his Kennedy divorce, or his live-in girlfriend whom he may or may not marry before or after she moves into the Executive Mansion with him. (New term–First Bimbo?)

  2. Carl September 30, 2010 at 7:34 am #

Except Ward doesn’t tell you this:

    1. She’s the one who had the dalliance and left the marriage.
    2. No credible evidence exists of him cheating.
    3. She’s backing him in his gubernatorial run.

  3. Dan September 30, 2010 at 8:10 am #

The solution to all of this distraction of course is for Andrew to stand up and debate Paladino. Absent a meaningful debate of the issues, we will be forced to have more of this nonsense. Cuomo acts as if the Governor’s mansion is his birthright, and discussion of the issues and his own record are beneath him.

  4. Mike Walsh September 30, 2010 at 8:25 am #

And…the New york Post is a credible news source?

You guys treat Fred Dicker as a pulitzer prize journalist whenever he spreads rumors about anybody who’s not a progressive/liberal…..

    • Alan Bedenko September 30, 2010 at 8:27 am #

No, we tend to pay attention when insane local developers run for governor and threaten to murder reporters.

You offhandedly accuse Dicker as being not credible. Specifically dealing with something Paladino-related, please provide the link to any story, together with a specific quote therein, that you allege is untrue. Thanks so much in advance!

  5. Rob September 30, 2010 at 8:33 am #

Standard tea-bagger tactic – accuse people of dishonesty; refuse to identify any specific untruths.

  6. Keith September 30, 2010 at 9:14 am #

I agree with what Dan wrote. Cuomo needs to debate Paladino. I don’t think anyone knows anything about the “issues,” just this other crap going on. If Cuomo keeps assuming the election has already been won he could be in for an upset.

Although, 4 years of Paladino would make for 4 years of great SNL episodes.

    • Alan Bedenko September 30, 2010 at 9:43 am #

This meme that Cuomo won’t debate Carl is so manufactured and tired.

  7. BobbyCat September 30, 2010 at 10:00 am #

The problem with a Cuomo-Paladino debate is that a Paladino would turn it into a shouting match -brawl-media circus. Pure theater and nothing more.

Cuomo has published several 100+ page position papers on the issues, while Paladino has published none. The big-mouthed, bomb-throwing style got Paladino nominated but it turns out, like the little Wizard behind the curtain, he’s got no substance to back it up, other than anger and threats.

A radio debate might work because if the speaker didn’t adhere to the strict rules, his microphone could be shut off.

Using words like “kill” and “murder” to describe what Paladino said is an obvious tactic taken out of the political playbook to deflect people from the real problems caused by the status-Cuomos of our state.

    • Alan Bedenko September 30, 2010 at 10:27 am #

No, it’s an accurate description of “mad” Carl’s threats directed at a reporter who had the NERVE to ask Carl to back up an accusation that Cuomo cheated on the mother of his children, to whom he hasn’t been married to in almost 10 years.

  9. Mike In WNY September 30, 2010 at 11:01 am #

Do you honestly believe that Paladino meant he was going to murder Dicker?

    • Alan Bedenko September 30, 2010 at 11:09 am #

@MikeinWNY Why wouldn’t I believe what Carl said? Are you calling Carl a liar?

  10. Mike In WNY September 30, 2010 at 11:23 am #

Nice deflection. I believe he was using a figure of speech. Again, Do you believe he meant he was going to murder Dicker?

    • Alan Bedenko September 30, 2010 at 11:30 am #

      1. Carl has produced no proof that the Post or Dicker had a photog shoot the daughter. If they had, I’m sure they’d have printed it by now. And if they wouldn’t print it, they wouldn’t have tried to photograph her. So, I think Carl is full of it.

      2. I doubt Dicker assigns photography for the Post.

      3. Because Dicker had the nerve to challenge Carl and demand factual evidence for his smear of Cuomo (BTW, Dicker is no friend of Cuomo’s), Carl became enraged. No one ever challenged him like that before.

      4. Yes, I think Carl Paladino threatened to murder Fred Dicker if Dicker ever “again” assigned a photographer he never assigned to take a picture that was never taken.

  11. BobbyCat September 30, 2010 at 11:39 am #

If I threaten a cop by saying : “The next time I see you over there, I’m going to take you out”, I’m under arrest and in front of a judge facing serious charges. If you or me or anyone writes on this blog that you intend to “take out” the PODUS, the Secret Service will knock on your door, today. And that’s as it should be. You can tell the judge “I really didn’t mean what I said” and see if he/she believes you. If someone.. anyone… threatens to kill me, I take it seriously. I reach for the heat and retreat. If a school kid makes a threat to kill someone, the police take action. Carl Paladino, attorney, is old enough to know better and knows the rules (and penalties of a civil society. He’s skating on thin ice.

  12. Mike In WNY September 30, 2010 at 11:59 am #

Did Paladino threaten a cop? No, so what’s your point. BTW, what’s a PODUS, president of dumbasses of the United States?

  13. Mike In WNY September 30, 2010 at 12:04 pm #

Yes, I think Carl Paladino threatened to murder Fred Dicker

    Wow, I find that incomprehensible.

if Dicker ever “again” assigned a photographer he never assigned to take a picture that was never taken.

If that was meant to make your belief sound reasonable, it didn’t do it for me.

  14. Rob September 30, 2010 at 12:14 pm #

“Did Paladino threaten a cop? No, so what’s your point.”

Thanks, that was hilarious. It would be even funnier if you had followed it up with one of your boasts about how tea-baggers are so logical and scientific, but it was amusing enough as is.

  15. Rob September 30, 2010 at 12:24 pm #

Angrily telling someone that you’re going to “take him out” isn’t a threat just as sending the “RUN NI$$ERS RUN” email isn’t racist. Basically, tea-baggers don’t believe in objective reality. See also: tea-bagger economic theory.

  16. Mike In WNY September 30, 2010 at 12:38 pm #

Rob, my quote was about libertarians being logical, not the tea party as a whole. Unfortunately, the “tea party”, comes closest to advocating sane fiscal policies. It is not representative of my positions as a whole. Just as I share views with liberals on some positions, I would not characterize myself as a liberal.

  17. Rob September 30, 2010 at 12:46 pm #

Whatevs. Paladino’s words were objectively a threat and the email was objectively racist. Deal with it.

  18. BobbyCat September 30, 2010 at 1:08 pm #

    To MikeWNY,

You’re over your head son. Try bowling, or etc.

  19. Ward September 30, 2010 at 1:21 pm #

    “Try bowling or etc.” ????

I take back my comment from yesterday, about BoobyCat having taken tenth grade English.

  20. Mike In WNY September 30, 2010 at 1:22 pm #

BobbyCat, maybe some day you will come up with a substantive retort.

  21. Ward September 30, 2010 at 1:27 pm #

And, speaking of “issues” the Village Voice has just run a story about Cuomo’s reign at HUD.

Since it is highly unlikely that WNY Media will run a link to it (or that Fred Dicker will mention it either), we present it here as a public service.

  22. Rob September 30, 2010 at 1:33 pm #

Yes, they’ve “just” run a story from August 2008.

  23. pauldub September 30, 2010 at 3:38 pm #

@bobbycat Do not be dismissive of Bowling (Note the Cap). Do it again and I WILL TAKE YOU OUT!
