In the News

It has among the lowest tax burdens of any major country: fewer than 2 percent of the people pay any taxes. Government is limited, so that burdensome regulations never kill jobs.

This society embraces traditional religious values and a conservative sensibility. Nobody minds school prayer, same-sex marriage isn’t imaginable, and criminals are never coddled.

The budget priority is a strong military, the nation’s most respected institution. When generals decide on a policy for, say, Afghanistan, politicians defer to them. Citizens are deeply patriotic, and nobody burns flags.

So what is this Republican Eden, this Utopia?

click through to see which countries have implemented that very platform.

  • The edict has come down from Castle Cuomo, and he demands that the factionalized Democrats in WNY get their collective act together and stop stabbing each other in the back or cutting deals with Chris Collins.  No more Byron Brown and Steve Casey depressing city turnout to benefit Collins and harm ECDC candidates. This is a net positive, and it takes someone with the intense popularity and political capital of an Andrew Cuomo to whip these underlings into shape.
  • An interesting take from the Times about the High Line Park, which exists on what had once been a crumbling, rusted overpass. It’s billed as having been an “economic dynamo”, spurring lots of development and retail activity in what had once been a less-than-vibrant part of Manhattan.  It’s a preservationist success story.  But it also serves as a reminder here in Buffalo that all the preservation in the world doesn’t mean a thing unless you have people with money to capitalize on it.

I wasn’t aware that the GOP platform (which has yet to be drafted for 2012!), or the Ryan Budget proposal, or any other GOP document, called for the payment of taxes by 2% of the population.

On the other hand, Democrats want a larger share of the tax burden to be borne by “The Rich”, and fewer of “The Rest of Us” to pay any taxes.

Sounds like Mr. Kristof got it wrong (again).

You obviously didn’t read the linked article. No surprise there.

@Ward- The Democrats (and most Americans) just want those that are able to pay their fair share. Republicans want to balance the budget on the backs of the poor and middle class. We tried it your way and it isn’t working, our country and society has become divided and weak as wealth has become concentrated at the top.

And speaking of which….how come no one in the media has even mentioned the budget put forth by the House’s Progressive Caucus?

It proposes to: a. get rid of the deficit by 2021, b. creates a new “Make It in America” jobs plan, c. ends this country’s two wars, d. keeps the social safety net in place and e. fixes the inequality responsibly.

The Economist and Forbes-not what you’d call hotbeds of comsymp-were among the outlets with praise for the plan.

Speaking of “In the News” (but not in this news) Weinergate no longer “unproven”, Alan.

I am shocked…SHOCKED!!!!!…that Anthony Wiener turned out to be lying through his teeth. Once he backed off the describing the incident as “hacking”, and started calling it a prank (to avoid a legal investigation), it was just a matter of waiting for the teary-eyed press conference.

It was nice to see the occasionally spoonfed McCarthy acknowledge WNYMedia by name, rather than the “spoonfed bloggers” sideswipe.

He better be nice — with the continued newsroom downsizing Lipsey’s pushing for another round of, McCarthy’s might be shopping his byline to WNYMedia some day soon!

Leave it to Ward to hijack a thread and make it about his weiner obsession.

I can’t wait for Joe “the felon” Illuzzi’s take on what happened in the 26th. He promised that he’ll tell the REAL story – when he gets some time that is.
