Ah, the Tea Party.  Always standing up for REAL A-mur-icuns!  Not those …. ah, nevermind.

Most assuredly Ms. Palin or Ms. Bachmann will soon remind us of how Founding Father Strom Thurmond once boldly fought radical activists like Dr. Billie Jean King, Jamie Kennedy, and the old lady who rode the bus who went on to start Rosa’s Home Stores.

Ah, a public forum anytime a elected official wants to vote against their running platform. Kinda defeats the purposed of elected representation.

Parks and Recreation has demonstrated how effective forums are even on the most mundane details

Something tells me that Thompson would have absolutely no problem at all if a Democrat were to suddenly change his position and adopt a tea party stance on some issue.

Seems to me that he simply lacks the courage to state his position on this topic and is instead concocting this extremely weak argument as a cover.

Question – why isn’t the tea party completely in favor of marriage equality? Shouldn’t they want big government to leave the LGBT community alone?

@Mike in Florida: Stellar comment. “Dr. Billie Jean King”

The Tea Party’s core principles do not include opposing gay marriage. Fiscal responsibility, lower taxes, less government and personal responsibility are the cornerstones of the Tea Party movement. Some individual identified Tea Party supporters may take the position opposing gay marriage, but it is a personal one and no more. There are many people who identify with the Tea Party movement who support gay marriage.

Rus Thompson’s point that Grisanti flip-flopped has some merit, but not when the bigger picture is taken into account. Yes, it is a good thing for politicians to follow through on campaign promises, but it is unrealistic to expect to never have a change of mind. Accordingly, Grisanti made the correct decision with respect to same-sex marriage.

@Mike in Florida, Bachmann has already gone on record stating that gay marriage is a States’ Rights issue. While I don’t agree with the States that forbid it, it is the constitutional position.

“Bachmann has already gone on record stating that gay marriage is a States’ Rights issue. While I don’t agree with the States that forbid it, it is the constitutional position.”

She’s also on the record that she would support amending the US constitution to override the states on this issue.

Bachmann’s on the record a lot, it’s just usually Letterman’s or Leno’s, or some high school history teacher’s who is trying to illustrate what actually happened as opposed to her particular homespun version.

Remember when Rus Thompson was a likable gadfly who was fighting the good fight to get rid of the tolls? I wonder when he jumped the shark and become such a fucking tool.
