The Morning Grumpy – 2/16/2-12

16 Feb

All the news and views fit to consume during your morning grumpy.

1. This piece by Jon Stewart on the STOCK Act is impressive journalism even if it is loaded with goofy voices, brilliant cutaways, and snarky rhetoric. Maybe our nightly news crews could try something similar, without the humor.

2. That piece was followed by an excellent interview with our own Rep. Louise Slaughter. I love this woman.

3. Another bit of good news on the economy…which probably explains why the Republicans are amping up the culture wars. DON’T PAY ATTENTION TO THE GOOD ECONOMIC NEWS!  The number of people seeking unemployment benefits fell to the lowest point in almost four years last week.

Weekly applications for unemployment benefits dropped 13,000 to a seasonally adjusted 348,000, the Labor Department said Thursday. It was the fourth drop in five weeks and the fewest number of claims since March 2008

The average has fallen nearly 13 percent in the past year.

The consistent decline indicates that companies are laying off fewer workers, and hiring is likely picking up further. When applications drop consistently below 375,000, it usually signals that hiring is strong enough to lower the unemployment rate.

4. Rick Santorum is leading Mitt Romney in Michigan, Romney’s birthplace, according to a new poll from the Detroit News and WDIV-TV. The results showed that Santorum is up 34 percent compared to Romney’s 30 percent.

Romney is outspending Santorum 62 to 1 and still can’t guarantee a win in a state that has long been considered a “firewall” for him. He’s losing fast…to Rick Fucking Santorum. What a huge embarrassing failure.
