Learn Guitar with David Brent

30 Aug

The British version of the Office only went on for two seasons, plus a special. The American version just ended after nine seasons, long enough to jump the shark. (Tim and Dawn didn’t get together until the very end of the Christmas special – Jim and Pam got married in season 6. David Brent had left Wernham Hogg by time of the special, but he was a part of the show – Michael Scott disappeared after season 7).

But now that both are done, Ricky Gervais, who played Brent and co-created the series, has revived the Brent character through a series of YouTube videos called “Learn Guitar with David Brent“. You don’t really learn how to play guitar, but Brent’s awkward and clueless arrogance comes out loud and clear.

Here’s an appropriate one for today – language NSFW. I find ’em. I find ’em.

Karl Pilkington & An Idiot Abroad

1 Oct

To those of you who aren’t fans of just about every single thing Ricky Gervais has ever done, Karl Pilkington is sort of the Bababooie character in the acclaimed Gervais-Merchant podcasts.  Pilkington has made quite a good living being the odd, hilarious, incurious target of Gervais’ ribbing and Merchant’s calm and neutralish interjections.

Travelogue shows like Samantha Brown‘s and Anthony Bourdain‘s are quite popular on cable TV, but never before has there been a travelogue show featuring a host who hates travel, hates exotic things, and prefers to knock about at home.

We don’t get Sky One here in the States, but my God do I want to see Karl Pilkington in “An Idiot Abroad”, airing now in the UK.  A taste (NSFW):

Extras Series Finale

17 Dec

You know how when you’re a kid and you’re a fan of someone or something, you dream of someday meeting them, working with them, hanging out with them? Well, if there was one person in show business I would love to work with – in however small a capacity – more than anyone else, it would be Ricky Gervais. From his masterpiece The Office, to the brilliant Extras, or even the fantastically funny podcasts, he has that distinctly British combination of brains and humor that make most American expletive-hucking comics look like dribbling morons by comparison.

Last night, HBO aired the series finale / Christmas special of Extras. Caution – spoilers ahead. Continue reading
