The Morning Grumpy 2/6/2012

6 Feb

All the news and views fit to consume during your morning grumpy.

1. In my opinion, the only Super Bowl commercial worth mentioning and possibly one of the best ever.

Excellent pep talk from the Grandpa you wish you had, Clint Eastwood.

2. Excellent news for President Obama in today’s Washington Post-ABC News poll. Obama holds a strong lead over Republican frontrunner Mitt Romney, 52 to 43 percent among all Americans; more narrowly, 51 to 45 percent, among registered voters.

Romney’s numbers continue to drop as Americans said (by a 2-1 margin), that the more they learned about Romney, the less they liked him. Also, 66% of Americans think Romney doesn’t pay his fair share in taxes. With unemployment going down, and Ol’ 1% Romney emerging as the opposition candidate, it’s starting to look like smooth sailing for President Obama.

Some other interesting data from the poll:

– 55 percent of those who are closely following the campaign say they disapprove of what the GOP candidates have been saying.

– The president’s recent remarks are better reviewed. Among the roughly 6 in 10 Americans who heard or read about the president’s State of the Union address, 57 percent say they approve of most of what he laid out.

– Obama leads 52-37 over Romney when the question is, “Which candidate better understands the economic problems people in this country are having?”.

With both candidates tied at 46% on who is better qualified to handle “Creating Jobs”, I’m not sure what the upside is on Romney’s candidacy. The Republicans need to run  a far right wing lunatic and get stomped in a general election if we’re ever going to flush this nonsense from the American system. Running a candidate like Romney will only inflame the base and their demands that they need to be “more conservative”.

3. 11/18/2008: “If General Motors, Ford and Chrysler get the bailout that their chief executives asked for yesterday, you can kiss the American automotive industry goodbye. It won’t go overnight, but its demise will be virtually guaranteed.” – Mitt Romney

2/6/2012: Bailed out by the government just three years ago, General Motors Co. has set its sights on a once-unthinkable goal: making more than $10 billion a year. It already is headed in that direction. On Feb. 16, GM is likely to report 2011 net income of about $8 billion, its highest ever, according to people who have seen the figures.

Thanks, Obama.

4. Chart Porn! Ten charts that prove America is a low-tax country, contrary to the claims of the Republican Party.

Fact Of The Day: On February 6th, 1971, Alan Shepherd became the first man to hit a golf ball on the moon.

Quote Of The Day: “If capitalism is fair then unionism must be. If men have a right to capitalize their ideas and the resources of their country, then that implies the right of men to capitalize their labor.” ~ Frank Lloyd Wright
