In her (apparently abbreviated) column today regarding a tongue-in-cheek proposal that we institute a “Bureaucracy Hall of Fame”, Mary Kunz Goldman refers to the
Anschluss of the Health Care Industries Association with a new wing of the Buffalo Niagara Partnership called the Life Sciences Industries Council
The German term Anschluss entered our vocabulary thanks to Nazi Germany’s annexation of Austria in the spring of 1938 (actually, the word is closer to “union” than “annex”). So, points for proper use of a word, which are quickly subtracted for that word’s Nazi symbolism.
Why would Mary use that particular term? Did her thesaurus run out of synonyms for “merger”? In a column about government bureaucracy that begins with a quote from Kevin Gaughan, why would Mary highlight the merger of two private business advocacy entities? Is the Partnership’s Life Sciences council hapless, powerless Austria to the HCIA’s Nazi juggernaut?
So many questions.
