A Note to A.J. Baynes

24 Oct

The anti-Howard videos that appear on WNYMedia.net were created by WNYMedia.net on our own dime, on our own time. At no time did anyone from the Glascott campaign have anything to do with them, or pay for them.

Pointing out Sheriff Howard’s patent failure is fun, easy, and effective – we don’t have to be paid to do it.

But thanks for the opportunity to re-post these:

From the Buffalo News:

The sheriff’s department came under fire when a volunteer search party discovered the body of the Clarence mother of four the day after the department scaled back its own round-the-clock search.

“He could have called in other law enforcement agencies,” Glascott said of Howard. “You never should stop a search and let friends and family find the body.”

At the time, Howard’s right-hand man took responsibility for scaling back the search and acknowledged the bike path area where Diver was found had been searched at least twice.

“We may have missed it,” Undersheriff Richard T. Donovan told a packed news conference three years ago.

Howard, who often points to Sanchez’s arrest as one of his proudest achievements, took issue with Glascott’s criticism of his department’s handling of the search.

“The investigation never ceased,” Howard said. “It was never stopped.”

The sheriff’s role in the Bike Path case has emerged as a campaign issue in part because of radio and Internet political ads praising and criticizing him.

A new Internet video by Marc J. Odien, founder and editor of WNYMedia.net, an online source for local news and information, lambastes Howard for his handling of the Diver search.

The ad, now widely available on YouTube and other online services, claims Howard called off the search, “less than 24 hours after Joan Diver went missing.”

Odien, who was paid to build Glascott’s campaign Web site, said the candidate had no role in the video.

“This is all mine,” he said. “I just think the whole Diver thing was mishandled.”

A.J. Baynes, Howard’s campaign manager, called the ad a “blatant, desperate attempt by a losing campaign to garner votes.”

Another note to AJ Baynes: fire your flunky Steve, or at least give him better talking points and spell check. Thanks.

  2. Chris Smith October 24, 2009 at 11:09 pm #

Marc Odien has been anti-Tim Howard since before Howard was even elected. Marc has a pretty good history of warfare with Mary Murray and Tim Howard, just ask him to tell you the details and the reasons.

We didn’t seek nor did we receive compensation for these videos as we collectively agree that Tim Howard is an utter failure as a County Sheriff and we will dedicate whatever resources are at our disposal to see to his defeat.

i kind of envy you guys doing this shit on behalf of the lenihan/rivera/panepinto mob. when we exposed their boy jon powers last year we wound up getting subpoenaed by one of their flunkies at the state board of elections over our non-existent relationship with the jack davis campaign. one of these days i guess i’ll learn that it’s always more comfortable fighting for truth on behalf of the powers that be.

  4. Mike Walsh October 25, 2009 at 1:42 am #

Tell me how Glascott is more qualified than Howard. Leave out vindictive personal and political issues.

  5. The Humanist October 25, 2009 at 1:59 am #

OK, I’ll start……Glascott didn’t let Bucky Phillips escape from a kitchen and make Trooper Longobardo’s 1-year old son an orphan.

  6. Marc October 25, 2009 at 2:04 am #

    May I continue…?

John Glascott didn’t hire a former barmaid with no prior experience and a degree in interior design to head the holding center.

  7. mike hudson October 25, 2009 at 3:35 am #

so i guess the jody samuel civil rights lawsuit filed against the cheektowaga police department in april of this year is not under discussion.

nor is glascott’s spirited defense of officer david robida, who sent numerous vulger emails to a former girlfriend threatening her in july of last year.

or the rev. darius pridgen’s 2001 remarks concerning the “virtual apartheid” existing in cheektowaga, and criticism of the all-white police department as operating “with no checks or balances in regard to race relations” after a black woman was killed trying to get to a local mall.

or the department’s role in the death of lee przybyl, who was ordered by police to surrender her legally owned firearms a few hours before she was shot to death by her estranged husband.

    or….

  8. Steve October 25, 2009 at 7:16 am #

Why the town board in Cheektowaga passed over Glascott to be thier chief even though he has been on the force for 30 years.

    or

The fact he would be running a force which has over 400 employees with more corrections experience than him. or The fact he sports a 2 year ECC degree vs Howard’s SUNY master degree. It does pay to be educated these days or

  9. Steve October 25, 2009 at 7:27 am #

More ass patting liars protecting another liar…I knew the forces would come out to defend one of thier own…No I didn’t get paid by Glascott for the videos…oh you didnt ask me about the website…oh yeah I did get paid for that….liar, liar, liar. BTW looking at the pityful website you’ll find 14 of the 15 “in the news stories” to be about the jail. This is all this guy knows, even though 400 of his employees will have more jail experience than him. Please….

  10. mike hudson October 25, 2009 at 10:00 am #

    ass-patting liars…that’s pretty funny.

is that true alan, mark and chris? did you guys take money from the glascott campaign for anything?

  11. mike hudson October 25, 2009 at 10:03 am #

and, just to be clear, by ass-patting liars, i mean “you guys,” i mean wnymedia in any of its various incarnations of company names, or anyone individual who works on/at wnymedia or any of those incarnations.

    and if so, how much?

clearly, reading is fun, wnymedia is a scary conglomerate that offers much, much more than the anti-howard videos it has created. i believe the guys when they say they didn’t get a dime for doing them. the question then becomes how much did they get from the glascott campaign for any or all the other professional services they perform, of which the above is merely a partial list. even consulting fees can often be used to obfuscate political payoffs. any campaign consulting going on here by anyone who works for wnymedia?

i would so hate to think that these nice boys are now engaging in something they bitterly accused me of last november. because that would be hypocritical, and i like to thing that smith, odien, bedenko & co. are as pure as the driven snow.

  14. George Costanza October 25, 2009 at 11:13 am #

Why doesn’t A.J. Baynes just come out and admit that he is “Steve”?

  15. Alan Bedenko October 25, 2009 at 11:24 am #

I have never received one red cent from any candidate for anything on my blog, ever.

  16. Haterade October 25, 2009 at 11:30 am #

If only 400 of Howards employees have more jail experience than Glascott … EVERY ONE of them have more experience than Howard. Howard can defend his POLITICAL hacks all day long, but the proof is in the pudding. If they were as great as he says, we wouldn’t have all the problems. He claims to be at the ready to dicipline his employees … unless they are donors obviously. He’s a hypocritical liar.

@Costanza … If Baynes is “Steve”, his rich daddy should get his money back from St. Joes.

  17. Steve October 25, 2009 at 11:52 am #

@ass patter’s at WNY media…11:50 am….I’m home listening to your boy Glascott get his ass handed to him by Howard. I would assume AJ…who I wouldn’t know from a hole in the wall, is with Howard at the debate. Nice try, worry about the issues and less about me. You guys are the unethical ones. When does Hate get his own blog, so he can talk jail 24/7. Thats all he knows.

  18. mike hudson October 25, 2009 at 12:05 pm #

“I have never received one red cent from any candidate for anything on my blog, ever.”

but as you know, alan, that’s not the question. the silence here is deafening, which tells me that steve’s hit on something. in the absence of a denial to the question “has anyone associated with wnymedia ever recieved payment for anything from the glascott campaign,” we can only assume that they have.

and obviously, alan, the fact that you never personally received a red cent is made completely irrelevant if the very platform your blog exists on is all or partly sunsidized by the politicians you wax so eloquently about. wow. i am shocked.

  19. mike hudson October 25, 2009 at 12:06 pm #

subsidized, of course. and i am still shocked.

  20. Marc Odien October 25, 2009 at 12:15 pm #

Mike, I have no problem telling you that the only service performed by us was somewhere around $1200 for “website/blog hosting and design” and that service was outsourced to an independent web developer and not by any of our “bloggers” “contributors” or “the big three”. |t was paid in two installments.

When completed we handed the website off to one of their campaign workers, spent a half hour instructing them how to use it and haven’t had anything to do with it since.

For full disclosure, we supplied the same service for the Hamburg Democratic slate up for election this year.

Any paid content (which we have never had) on this site will always be disclosed, similar to the way we have done with various BPS videos we have posted in the past if we feel their is something to disclose.

Our service department is no different than any service department offered by all three local TV stations, Business First and other media outlets across the country.

  21. Steve October 25, 2009 at 1:00 pm #

@Marc…feel better you got that bull off your chest. You were aked by me if you had been paid. You said no. I asked you to disclose. You said no I wasn’t paid. I think its quite clear you should have. You were hiding it. Since you are all liberal union loving Dems I’m going install you as the President of the APU…Ass Patters United.

  22. Marc Odien October 25, 2009 at 1:08 pm #

why would I hide something that is clearly going to be listed in financial disclosure reports for anyone to see?

As we previously talked about on BN, you asked me if the videos were paid for by Glascott. I said No. Still say No. If you wanted an answer you should of been more specific…I would of been happy to tell you that as i did to phil fairbanks and anyone else who asks the right questions.

Now if you’ll excuse me I have spent way too much of my time dealing with your nonsense this weekend. its 1pm. Football has commenced and Im done wasting more time dealing with your stupidity

  23. Steve October 25, 2009 at 1:11 pm #

I know….its hard to multi task…my nonsense only pales to your lies.

  24. mike hudson October 25, 2009 at 1:16 pm #

now marc, as a businessman, i truly have no problem with that. in fact, during last year’s election cycle, i tried to explain the same concept to a number of people here, to the buffalo news etc. without much success. i did successfully fight a government subpoena, and eventually had to go to court myself in order to put a stop to the nonsense. the attacks cost me a tremendous amount of money and goodwill in the community.

all 21st century media companies interested in staying in business must find sources of revenue other than editorial content, because editorial content in itself generates no revenue. as a print newspaper, the niagara falls reporter does printing and advertising business in much the same way that wnymedia does website/blog hosting and design. i would hope anyone involved in any aspect of the business would, in the future, be professional/grown up enough to recognize these simple facts of life.

  25. Steve October 25, 2009 at 1:47 pm #

And I would hope in the future when you mount a repeated attack on a political candidate, you disclose you have recieved money from the opponent. I don’t care for what, just that you have. His website is part of his campaign…I asked you if you recived any money from him…not just for the videos. Don’t split hairs.

  26. Dan October 25, 2009 at 2:39 pm #

Wow – this is getting more like Illuzzi & Pigeon every day.

    • Alan Bedenko October 25, 2009 at 4:41 pm #

Yeah, for sure. Because we post all the rumor about who’s fucking whom, and calling people lowlifes, praying to Jesus a lot, and we’re chock-full of political ads.

      Idiots.

  27. mike hudson October 25, 2009 at 5:04 pm #

c’mon alan. once a media entity takes the money, it is in the same boat as any other media entity that takes money from politicians. you do call people lowlifes. constantly. you don’t pray to jesus but what’s that got to do with anything? wnymedia doesn’t have political ads but, as marc explained, you make your political money in other ways.

and as i said to marc, there’s nothing wrong with that. it’s just that the next time you slam iuzzi, you’ll have to be a little creative and slam him for his idiotic worldview rather than the fact that he takes money from politicians because now, for the first time, a wnymedia “big” is on record as saying you guys do too. once that line is crossed, it simply becomes a matter of which politicians and how much money.

    • Alan Bedenko October 25, 2009 at 5:21 pm #

      Yeah, it’s exactly the same.

We’ve slammed Tim Howard for 5 years. He was the reason this site was created. Glascott hiring Marc to do a website in no way influenced our opinion or coverage. The archives speak for themselves.

  28. mike hudson October 25, 2009 at 6:00 pm #

at the time of last year’s election, when i put joe mesi’s pic on the front page of my paper, i was slammed despite the fact that it was the fourth or fifth time over the previous eight years that he’d been pictured on the front page of my paper, despite the fact that he and i had been friends for a long time, despite the fact that, when we were struggling during the first year of publication, he held the paper up repeatedly in front of the tv cameras in support the first time he fought here in the falls.

no, i ran his picture and a friendly interview because steve pigeon paid me to, despite the fact i hardly knew pigeon at the time, hardly know him now. wnymedia takes money from politicians, the niagara falls reporter takes money from politicians, joe illuzzi takes money from politicians. artvoice takes money from politicians and from organized crime-run prostitution operations and the buffalo news takes money from anyone willing to pay.

but of course if it makes you feel better, you’re special alan. and because of your specialness you can get up there and accuse others of doing what we now know your company does as well, thich is taking money from politicians, as though that were an evil thing. because you only take money from good politicians, or something.

  29. Joe Genco October 25, 2009 at 7:34 pm #

Alan, to paraphrase Hudson: We are not debating what you are, simply negotiating the price.

  30. mike hudson October 26, 2009 at 12:45 am #

here at the niagara falls reporter, we call the little extras (internet advertising, for example) an “added value” service for choosing to do business with us. many of the restaurants, law firms, jewelers, attractions and other advertisers who have been with us for years enjoy the perks that come from supporting what we do here. as marc said, these services are no different than those provided by media outlets across the country.

btw, i will state categorically that neither myself, the niagara falls reporter, power city press, niagara roar publications or the rock band called the pagans has ever accepted one red cent from the howard campaign.

  31. Chris from OP October 26, 2009 at 9:52 am #

For all the anti-Glascott vitriol I see spewed here, I have yet to hear one good thing said about Guantanamo Tim by any of his supporters here.

  32. mike October 26, 2009 at 10:19 am #

I believe that anyone who supports the NFR with print ad’s should be boycotted! Oh wait, we already did, maybe thats why they lost so many customers, but they blamed it on the smoking ban.

  33. Hank October 26, 2009 at 11:19 am #

Howard’s ineptitude appears to be common knowledge. John has been straight on in his assessment, which with our shared experience in corrections, I’ve had no argument with. The first sheriff I worked for had the conditions so bad that it was unsafe in many places for both the staff and the inmates to be. (snow and rain coming through the roof into inmate housing areas and tiers for example)—He was a Democrat and Norfolk’s first black sheriff.

Howard’s Masters degree (I would think in Criminal Justice) would qualify HIM to be the Jail Admnistrator, much more so than his girlfriend. That doesn’t mean he would be a good Sheriff. And as the Sheriff in my county in NC found out too late, you’re only as good as the people you surround yourself with. –That Sheriff was a reverse Jumpin’ Jeffords Democrat. Honestly, I don’t think this race has anything to do partisan politics. I always felt that a Sheriff should be appointed by either a governor or by a county board by their qualifications and experience in administration. Never happen most likely. As for this Chickentown cop—I would think the concerned Erie County citizen wants a responsible sheriff, so let’s male sure we’re not replacing an incompent with another incompetent.

    • Marc Odien October 26, 2009 at 11:25 am #

      Hank,

not sure where in NC you are, but who was the sheriff down there that was a little crazy himself… (county between greensboro and charlotte??) I remember he painted the jails pink and made inmates do crazy things to keep order in his jails… do you know who i am talking about? If I heard his name it would click with me… Is he still around down there? The guy was a trip… Think he even had his own tv show

  34. Haterade October 26, 2009 at 11:40 am #

One interesting part of the debate was when Glascott said that Howard doesn’t visit the jails. Howard pretty much acknowleged that fact, but justified it by comapring himself to a CEO. That may be a valid comparison, had there not been a multitude of problems which we are all aware of. It is obvious that people in charge weren’t doing their jobs correctly. That is when it is up to the “CEO” do either make sure they do… or make changes. The only thing Howard seems to make is excuses. You can’t run a department from your office. You can’t get a full picture by reading memos. It is unfathomable to me that he would not tour the jail several times a week in the time of crisis. That is not a leader.

Also funny that Glascotts jail credentials are criticized, yet Barb Leary – the interior designer/barmaid was supposedly in charge of the youth detention, which has about the same amount of residents as the Cheetowaga lockup – and is a residential center and in NO WAY a “jail” is considered qualified? Check the list of his campaign donors to see the level of her qualifications. While your at it, you’ll see ALL the appointed chiefs, undersheriffs etc. represented. Good thing Howard keeps politics out of law enforcement.

  35. Haterade October 26, 2009 at 12:40 pm #

One telling point of the debate yesterday was when Glascott pointed out that Howard rarely if ever steps foot inside the jails. Howard compared himself to a “CEO”, and said that it wasn’t necessary and that he reads reports and memos. Seeing as how the jails are one of the few mandated functions of his office, the largest cost center of his budget, and without a doubt the biggest trouble spots in his command … that is utterly ridiculous. I understand letting the people who were hired to run the jails do their jobs – but when it becomes painfully obvious (for a myriad of reasons we are all aware of)that they either can’t, or are unwilling to do their jobs properly it is the duty of the boss to make changes, How can he know what is going on if he never tours the facilities? He should be in those jails several times a week. That would also boost respect and morale amongst officers. That is what a LEADER would do.

I also shook my head at the double standard employed by Mr. Howard. He defended the qualifications of Barb Leary, whom he appointed to oversee the daily ops of the holding center. She was a director of the EC Dept of Youth, which is in no way a “jail”. It has only about a dozen “residents” at any given time, and the standards for minors (mostly on PINS warrants) and adult inmates awaiting criminal trials are very different. Howard says Glascott’s time as a state CO at Attica is nothing… but this woman’s interior designing degree and barmaid experience is qualification enough for him? She is obviously very happy, seeing as how she kicks back a great deal of money into Howards campaign coffers … just like every other appointed chief, undersheriff etc. Good to see he lives up to his claim of keepin politics out of the job.

  36. Haterade October 26, 2009 at 1:13 pm #

Sorry about the double post. For some reason they appear and dissappear on me ! Oh well… feel free to delete either on BP. Thanks.

  37. Haterade October 26, 2009 at 2:02 pm #

@Hudson … sure , discuss that civil rights lawsuit. Then tell me how many have been filed against Howard and the ECSO. Tell me how much taxpater money is set aside to settle lawsuits on a yearly basis. Maybe you can find out, because when the Glascott people tried with a FOLI request, they were told – astonishingly- that they couldn’t get that info to them until Nov. 5th. I believe the figure is somewhere around 30 million.

Please tell me about the “spiriited Defense” of that officer who sent *gulp* vulgar emails to an ex. Did he or did he not get fired? Now tell me about the clerk at the HC whose mistake resulted in rape. 3 days off. Guess who she’s related to. Sue Darlak … Howards girlfriend.

You want to go back to 2001? Really? Contact Rev. Pridgen and see who he supports in this election.
    I’ll give you a hint … it ain’t Howard.

  38. Hank October 26, 2009 at 2:53 pm #

@Marc—He was the Sheriff of Forsyth County, which is Winston/Salem, about 2 hours from my home in Lincolnton. I lived down here at the time he was serving. He was trying to be NC’s version of Maricopa County AZ Sheriff Joe Arpiao. Ended up in his own jail for malfeasance in office.
As I’ve mentioned on several posts on Howard— around 10% of county sheriff’s end up in their own jails, for various reasons. Lincoln County Sheriff Tim Daugherty was indicted 2 weeks ago on 2 felony counts of obstruction of justice—-allowing his Chief Deputy to release a local MD from a DUI arrest without alka-sensor or breathalyzer or blood test. The doctor’s secretary was the live in girlfriend of the Chief Deputy.

If it was me, my ass would be in jail. If you put yourself above the law that you’re supposed to enforce, jail is the place for you to be, on the “hard” side of the bars.

  39. Hank October 26, 2009 at 3:14 pm #

@ John–The first sheriff I worked for almost NEVER came into the jail—I think he was afraid.
The 2nd sheriff I worked for had been a detctive for the Norfolk PD, and he wasn’t afraid of anything, which as you know can be bad for your personal safety. He toured the jail on every shift, talked to inmates and deputies. And if there was a fight in a cellblock, he had no compunction to come in the block with the deputies. and bring inmates under control, even when the odds were 20:1. I agree with John 100%—You cannot properly run a jail, much less the entire Sheriff’s Department by reading memos, hiding out in your office, and listening to people who believe their job is to tell you what you want to hear. Don’t know Glascott from Adam’s Housecat—but Howard should be voted out—he’s proved that his judgement and ability don’t pack the gear to get the job done.
